I apologize as I do not have an answer to your question but rather a question for you. My husband came home this afternoon and informed me we are moving to Alabama, exact town not sure. My immediate concern is/was what about my Hostas, I have quite a few. I immediately checked the USDA hardiness zone and you appear to be a zone 6. I am zone 5 and we have gotten to -15 below here and my hostas have never froze. I have been gardening in this spot for 20 years and it breaks my heart to think about leaving. Any advice you could give me on gardening in your area to possibly ease my pain would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps it's fate that your posting was the first to appear the same day this move was presented to me.

hostachic, we, too, are just north of Huntsville. In fact, we are exactly halfway between Nashville and Huntsville. My fav hosta nursery is in Franklin, Tn called Hewitt's. They have the largest selection of hosta I have seen anywhere, although they are pretty pricey. I understand the owner is president of the Nashville Hosta Society. I hope this helps.

mxracer264, you will LOVE gardening in this area, as our hostas start to poke their little noses out in March and unless there is a severe dry spell like last year, they stay with us until late Oct. or Nov. We normally mow the lawns here until around Thanksgiving, so put on your working gloves and come on!!!

You may wish to attend the Dixie Region Hosta Society Convention, hosted by the Alabama Hosta Society on June 1-2 at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
There are always a number of vendor's, that specialize in Hostas, selling their plants. I know of some vendors from the Atlanta area that plan to attend. Bob & Nancy Solberg (Green Hill Farms) are usually at the meetings with some of their Hostas. You will also have the opportunity to meet a lot of plant nuts and talk about Hostas!

Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for your answers! LOVED "they all come in brown boxes"! response. I have NEVER ordered a hosta nor bid for one on Ebay but they have several on there right now that are very tempting. Just nothing like seeing them in person and buying them. We will be going thru Bham the hosta convention weekend but on our way to the beach. Would LOVE to hear the HOSTA IN POTS lecture!

SUMMERDAZE....How many varieties of Hosta would you say that Hewitt's carries? Hubby's VERY interested in a day trip there!!!

My best guess would be around 50-60 varieties. They even sell huge ones in 30 gallon containers, so take a truck! I bought Vim and Vigor that way last year and have been thrilled with it. It looks like a giant elephant ear.

They are open 7 days a week, but not until noon on Sunday. Be sure to check out "up on the hill" as there are more hostas up there. It's kind of hidden from the rest of the nursery so if you don't see it, just ask someone. It was our third trip for we discovered that section. Have fun!

I was interested in this post as we'll be moving from Northern Indiana to near Franklin, Tennessee, in the next year or so!

I'll still mail order from my favorite nursery, though . . . Hallson's in Michigan. Owner Chris Wilson is very knowledgable about HVX and very pro-active about selling only clean, virus-free plants. They're field-grown and you won't believe the size of the roots. I've never been disappointed!
