Where can I find Salvia seeds?

I'm looking for sources for Salvia seeds, the plants are expensive... I'm looking especially for 'Purple Majesty', Wendy's Wish', Blue Farinacea, and other hummingbird-butterfly magnets... Thanks for your help, sally

Have you tried the Seed Exchange Forum? Most times you'll need to set up a trade, but sometimes people offer them for SASE. Maybe Ebay. Good luck :) Christy

Thanks for the advice, I heard from another poster that 2 of these Salvia are sterile hybrids and only available by cutting-plant, so no seeds! I had ordered Blue Farinacea seeds from Park and they were sold-out... guess I'll just have to get them in plant form from a Nursery, but they are pricey... Thanks again for the help, sally

tuxedo -- Lemon thyme is one of those herbs that doesn't always produce true from seed -- ie, it's possible to grow lemon thyme from seed, but its not at all uncommon for the seedlings to show a great deal of variation from the original plant. Most lemon thyme is propagated vegetatively -- usually by root division.

This is weird but true. Despite a good 4 to 6 inches of leaf mulch last fall, I got hundreds of Yvonne's Salvia volunteers. They grew faster and healthier than my WSown ones. Most of the ones I kept were volunteers, and they're still the biggest ones. I think everything got a slow start for me this year, especially annuals, which I attribute to unusually cool and wet spring. (I still have a couple of coleus and angelonia only about and inch tall! Some are bigger, though). I thought it odd that the volunteer salvia have done so much better than the WSown ones. It's not the transplanting that was an issue because the volunteers were transplanted too, to form the rows shown above. This makes me wonder if Yvonne's salvia is best grown (if not indoors under lights) from volunteers or even direct sowing. Last year's WSown ones did reasonably well for me (topped out around 48 to 50 inches by fall), but last year was exceptionally hot... I guess time will tell which method gives me the best result. Mostly, seeds of Salvia species are offered when that is the most convenient way to propagate them. Many do not set much seed well,and for many species, ripe seed is not held in the calyx for more than 4 to 10 days before the calyx falls off, or the seed falls out. Also, finches love the seeds of many. This makes collecting them very tedious. New World species are generally much harder to collect than Old World species. Fortunately, S. fruticosa is closely related to Old World S. officinalis, which does set seed well enough to be readily available. Some hybrids of garden sage have S. fruticosa genes in them. Unless there is a good market for them, seeds of Salvias are generally not available. Did you try Seed Seva?

I look in the herb section of the Burpee seed stand a the greenhouse, supermarket, etc.

Hi Sally, I second the great suggestions above. Also my local ag supply has an incredible selection. Also you can ask if anyone has free seeds for SASBE in the following forum and explain that you want hummer/butterfly plants:

If you can't find, Diane's Seeds is very popular in my regular forum on gardenweb:

Some people like buying seed at swallowtail, other people think the co. takes too long filling orders in High Season: Salvia at Swallowtail

Just be sure to check for plants that might be invasive in your area. Good luck!

I have gotten seed online before that were not viable. So you have to be careful who you get seed from. Diane's seed is very reliable. I have ordered there several times without a problem.
