Hummingbird Garden

My First Hummingbird Sighting

I have just seen a hummingbird in my garden for the first time. It happened yesterday, June 8th at around 6:40 p.m. I was sitting on my porch when i noticed some motion down by my shed. I saw it feeding on the coral honeysuckle down there. It only stayed there for a few seconds and then took off. I sure hope it comes back.

Good for you. Certainly coral honeysuckle is one of their favorites in my yard. You may need more of their favs to keep them coming back and a feeder or two.

That's great! It's also quite encouraging to hear. I'm also in PA, near Reading. I'm still waiting on my first visitor. I have four coral honeysuckles (2 are just babies though). I hope they find mine too.

pm2: Mine is an 8 oz one from Wild Birds Unlimited. It's identical to humzinger in every way, even made for them by humzinger. They have a retail store near me and their feeder was a few $ cheaper than the brand name Humzinger. 8 oz is plenty for me because my birds will not allow more than one to feed at a time. I make nectar in larger portions and store in covered jar in the fridge. Only takes a minute for me to clean, refill, and rehang. Again, easy to clean and can even go into the dishwasher. I just use any old soap or spray cleaner. Someone above mentioned no soap but the manufacturer makes no such recommendation and I don't see how soap could be a problem as long as it's rinsed well. Thank you for the Dawn and Dusk tip mehitabel, I am always up early, and it is usually very calm, but in the evening it is usually windy this time of year until after dark. In answer to your post on 'What is blooming', I have nothing blooming at this time, I have a ton of things planted but no blooms at this time. I put out four feederz, as suggested by other members, a colorful windsock, even adding some red florescent tape that we had. I am sure that helped as we are on the very edge of town, and this little guy must have seen my red and decided to stop by. So glad he/she did. I will be watching this evening.

river, roses don't have nectar, so they aren't feeding. What they are probably doing in the climber is stalking their feeding plants. We have a feeder near a climbing rose and one hummer just sits there and if he sees another hummer go to the feeder, he darts out and chases it away. Once after a rainstorm, I saw hummers visiting my roses. I realize they were drinking water that had collected on the leaves and in the flowers. It was pretty neat.

Just saw a male ruby throated hummer in my backyard a few minutes ago checking out my orange tiger lilies. I've lived in the Patchogue area (mid-Suffolk on the South Shore) of LI over 40 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen a hummer! It was gorgeous--a truly amazing site. I feel privileged to have been graced with his presence, albeit all too briefly. Hopefully, he'll be back for more nectar soon. Regarding bats, we do indeed have them in our area. We love them, as they feed on the numerous mosquitoes we have in our area near the Bay. Also, we were privileged a few years ago to have an osprey come flying through our backyard, and we were visited by a red tail hawk about a month ago.

I'm in Eastern Pa, near Allentown. Right now I don't have any typical hummer-attracting plants blooming, but I do have a feeder set up and have had some activity there for nearly a month now. it was more sporadic, but this week I've seen one there at least once a day. (I posted a picture of him a few minutes ago in a new thread).

Congrats! Hope you see it again.
Coral honeysuckle is a good choice. It blooms such a long time. If you have room for more, they're pretty easy to root.
