What hoya would you get??

Hi guys/gals,

Yesterday hubby and I were talking about our upcoming anniversary. He asked me what I wanted and I said I want a hoya from Hawaii. He thought I wanted to go to Hawaii to get it. . . lol. Well I'd love to be able to go to CN's greenhouse and pick one out but thats not an option. So when he realized what I meant, he wasn't in as much shock.

So, I went to her web site to see what she had. There are several on her *large specimen* page that I'm interested in. I like the ones w/ the bigger leaves, and there are quite a few there to choose from.

Just curious what you guys would pick. I narrowed it down to these. . .

H. apple green

H. AH0240

H. rigida

H. pottsii IML 353

Hi Maid,

I'm looking at those hoyas right now and reading their descriptions, it's hard to choose! The apple green sounds interesting. I wonder if the fragrance smells like green apples? I don't grow any of these, so I can't give you any tips or advice on these. The dumb question I have is are you interested in both flowers and foilage or just one of the two?

Decisions, descisions....
I know it's hard shopping for a hoya. I'm looking for one more myself (as I only have room for one more, sadly)!

Well, the apple green is an Eriostemma and while not impossible to bloom, the chance of you (or me, or anyone else not living in Hawaii or Key West, FL) being able to get this plant to bloom are pretty slim. Eriostemmas need very warm temps year 'round to bloom. Depending on how warm you keep your house in the winter, will determine whether you could get this plant to bloom. I generally stay away from the Eriostemmas since they need such high light, warm temps and air movement to do well.

H. rigida and H. pottsii IML 353 are very nice and I would choose one of those two plants.

Hermie, If you do check out Lowe's, keep in mind all stores are not equal with their selection or care. I have one in particular that I like and know that they get there plants in on Thursday (I asked). WTS, I've gone and found nothing in the way of hoyas. Other times, I might walk out with 2, 3 or 4. You may be able to get them to request a particular variety for you. I've never done it as I like the "hunt". I think Teisa is right. This is a good time of year to be searching. Oh, and don't turn down a Lacunosa if you see one. It's one of the easiest to bloom and smells divine. One more thing, if you go ahunting while it's still cold, take along a paper bag or two. The cold goes right thru the plastic bags most stores use. Let us know how you make out. Gail

News Flash! Hoya can be easy to start from a leaf!!!! Ok, I know you have heard that they will root but never grow, and that was exactly my own experience too. I had a plant from my deceased mother that was withering away and dying, when the last leaf fell off I was very distraught. All the more so because the leaf looked so shiny dark green and healthy. So, wanting to keep my mom's beloved plant (and grandmother's before her), I put the leaf stem in root tone and then in a glass of water. To my delight in just a couple of weeks it had clearly begun sending out roots, but as the weeks went by, the roots grew to nearly fill the glass, but no growth. I determined that it must need some soil, so I went ahead and potted it. But after MANY weeks, still no growth even after some fertilizing. As I was lamenting to my daughter the lack of growth and the eventual inevitable loss of my heritage plant, she said "I have a friend who is always starting plants from leaves and she snips the top 1/3 of the leaf off to get them to grow". Well, although I felt a great deal of trepidation about it, since it had been more than a year since I started it in water, I decided to try it. I cut the end of the leaf off and watched it closely. The leaf did not wither and did seal off nicely so I was relieved. After about a month I noticed a bud on the stem portion and low and behold now a year later I have a burgeoning Hoya plant! You stick it in some corner, just to get it out of the way, and it goes: Hi :) I made you some flowers. I honestly think, in a large space, like an entryway, it would create quite the elegant waterfall. @ GT: "honeybadger" lol lol lol lol lol lol lol I won't forget that one. Re: Macgillivrayii I had to Google macgillivrayii to see what you were talking about and I see exactly what you mean. They do not translate to photo at all! I think it's because what makes them beautiful is they are thin, but thin like a knife... hard and crisp. It's very textural. They have sharp edges. And the way they drip vertically from the vine makes their hooks seem very pronounced, like talons. Re: Polystachya I wouldn't worry about it not growing for you right away. I think most Hoyas take time off growing new foliage and then do a bunch in a long spurt. (Just like me with filing!) It's just more obvious when a large Hoya is standing still. I find it to be a very dependable grower - faster than most of my rigidas. I took the most modest 1-node cutting possible from my sister's plant last fall and over the winter it turned into a very respectable young plant. Re: Big leaf plants vs Rapid growing plants It is hard to get mad at fast growing plants. They're kind of annoying because they're always causing work and problems, swarming and tangling into things they would do best to leave alone or at best transforming into huge wreaths that fall over every time you look at them. (I should just get a big ol' wreath frame, cut a hole in the bottom for a pot, and wrap tannaensis around it.) But then you're like, aww, okay you happy little dude. Re: greentoe's new plants Ischnopus & Montana. When I think of this type of Hoya, I always think of this quote from CB 6/17/12 regarding flavescens IML 1117: This is one of those NE New Guinea species collected and published by R, Schlechter in the early 1900s. We hoya collectors of the period between 1970 and 1990 used to refer to them as "Them Yaller Thangs" as there were around a half dozen yellow flowered hoyas with varying widths of hairy borders around each flower. They were often thought to be a single species but a careful, close up look showed some of them with big fat roundish corona lobes and some long slender ones. There were also differences in the hairy border widths and shapes on the flower petals and differences in the calyx lobes and the pollinaria. I always have liked Hoya flavescens best of the bunch. So, now I also think of them as "them yaller thangs." :) Obscura is a pretty plant even green. Everyone loves it. All its forms, from the white flowered one to Sunrise, are super aggressive growers. You might as well start it on a big hoop from day one. It won't stay little long. I personally think the aff. erythrostemma has the prettiest leaves, kind of like they are exaggerated versions of the other erythrostemmas (more veined, more succulent and hard), but every erythrostemma I have collected has been sweet and pretty. It has similar flowers to mindorensis, but is much much much more attractive leaf-wise. There is only one mindorensis with pretty leaves, imo: IML 0768. The others are all like floppy dog ears, so you should just choose them for the flowers LOL. Aldrichii is a great choice!! I feel like this one gets ignored a lot, but it is such an angel. Very beautiful. Yeah, you have to have a wibergiae, for sure. There's nothing like those metallic pink splashes. It's kind of annoying that it's so big, but it's worth a big leaf plant slot. Haha I've been reorganizing my plants (more on this in another thread) and in the process I realized I was able to fill an entire flat (18 slots) with only plants with finlaysonii type leaves. I didn't realize how many I had before, because they were scattered all about. I think my favorite actual finlaysonii is EPC 057, but the various related "sp." tend to have the most pronounced veining (e.g. Kalimantan, Maenam, etc). I do, however, find Ripple Leaf to be the fastest grower, so it's easy to have a big beautiful plant quickly. It's also nice because it has thinner flatter leaves, so it displays very different from the others. I always think it's a shame that EA doesn't offer fungii instead of carnosa. We probably have enough sources of carnosa out in the world, and fungii is like carnosa +1. No offense, carnosa. I am enjoying your ordering frenzy. There's really nothing like that initial period of building up your collection, when every conversation leads to acquisitions of 8+, and you can't read a thread without tripping over a wonderful Hoya you didn't know about. I didn't go through that stage without making tons of mistakes, but it was a very happy time - like falling in love. And like romantic infatuation, it will eventually grow into a more mellow love, so I think you should live it up and give into all your wild impulses like a crazy person. You may feel more dignified once you are saying things like "I really only want one cutting - I don't have room for more," but stage 1 is waaaaaay more fun!!

I just bought my first Hoya Carnosa plant last week, which looks like 3 plants in this 6“ pot. The ends of 4 of the 6 stems were dried out or cut by the garden shop. To promote growth by crowding roots(?), can I separate them into smaller pots and put the smaller pots back into original 6” pot with potting mix around them? I live in a cooler, cloudy climate— currently 55-60 degrees high. Will they do okay in east-facing sunroom? Brand new to caring for plants— any advice appreciated!

Hi, and thanks for the input. I do agree with both of you Jan and Mike. Those two are definitley tied for 1st. Now, to decide on which one hmmmmm. I just may have to not decide and get them both. Hey maybe Hubby would want hoya for his anniversary gift lol. . . not

Mike actually I do keep my house very warm in the winter, almost too hot for me, but hubby works outside and when he gets home he likes to be warm. I figure since he's the one workin for a livin, he should be comfortable, so I loose that battle. I'd say it's 80 deg on the average. Is that warm enough, do you think?

Brad, that's a good question, flowers or foliage. Well, I guess the answer is foliage, since I haven't had a single hoya bloom for me YET! I figure they are w/out flowers more than with, so foliage is important to me.

You're hoya shopping too, huh. Make sure to let us know what you get. Did you win the mealy battle?

I just placed an order With Carol Noel myself. I chose H.hellwigiana, Eriostemma Ruthie, and H. lacunosa. I chose the hellwigiana for the bright red leaves and the heavy veining in the leaf. The leaves have nice red color with high light, melon scented flowers, the lacunosa is supposed to be a reliable bloomer and she told me it was a nice large vine. The Ruthie is my wild card, my house stays pretty warm in winter also, and I am going to put my hoyas under light this year and see if they will bloom.

I also decided to e-mail Carol herself and see if she had something better, bigger that isn't in her catalog, she's lookin and gonna get back to me.

I'll get more opinions from you guys when I hear back from her.

If you keep your house at 80Â°F during the winter and you have good strong sun (unobstructed south windows) then you could very well get an Eriostemma to bloom. You'd need to move the plant outside into full sun during the summer, but it certainly seems doable, from what you've said. I know of a couple of people that live in Canada that have bloomed the Eriostemmas.

Since the flowers can be very fleeting, I am buying hoyas based on their foliage first and flowers second. The flowers are certainly a nice bonus, but the leaves are most important to me.

That said, check out Hoya callistophylla and Hoya finlaysonii. Hoya aff. finlaysonii also has beautiful leaves, but the plant's identity is not yet known for certain. Hoya sp. Kalimantan, IML 1168, available from David Liddle, in Australia, has the most spectacular foliage of any hoya I have ever seen. The flowers are nice, too, but they don't last very long.

Maid...I'd definately go with H. rigida...it's one of my "mostest favoritest" hoyas!! They do get VERY large, however. Mine came from Carol, too. I have H. pottsii as well....no comparison with H. rigida!! Why not buy both....sheesh, your anniversary only comes around once a year!! LOL Best wishes, Patrick

Carol just emailed me and said the H. pottsii has just finished blooming, but according to her they aren't the easiest to grow. Very dry in the winter and heavy water in spring/summer (growing months) Hmmmm. Anytime the words *not easy* are in the sentence, I steer clear. She said the AH0240 has beautiful leaves and blooms in October. She said she has a lot of big plants that are too stubborn to bloom and she won't sell them until they do bloom. Wish they'd bloom so she could share.

Thanks for the other suggestions Mike. I already have H. callistophylla and H.finlaysonii. I got them a few weeks ago from Gardino's. They're very nice looking plants, with the exception of the normal brown spots,the H. callistophylla even has a peduncle on it. The foliage on H. sp. Kalimantan looks a lot like H. callistophylla only more intense, I think.

Patrick, *mostest favoritist* huh, funny you. I really like that one too. This is so hard. And yes, I should by two, heck I should buy 7 since that's how many years we've been married, theres a thought.

Do you have any problems growing the Pottsii? Has it bloomed for you? Do you have a picture you can share? Oh yea, you don't have a camera and you do have a very old computer, oops.

I agree with what has been said about the Eriostemma species, I would skip that one. I can't believe no one has mentioned Hoya sp AH0240, what a nice Hoya! You can expect gorgeous white cupped fragrant flowers and soft fuzzy leaves. I would also get Hoya rigida for it's large shiny leaves and fragrant flowers.

Hi Maid,

Still battling mealies but the lacunosa is still alive!
I went to check it today and here's what I did:
I grabbed the hanger as close to the pot as I went to check for the egg sacs (turned it upside down to check under the pot rim) and I did find one and got rid of it right away! Then, I sprayed it with the insecticidal soap (Safer) and then let it to dry outside. It's still out there as a matter of fact. The mealies seem to be dropping in numbers, happy to say!

Here's a funny story: When I posted the Still Fighting Mealies message, I added that I was listening to the Carpenters to keep me happy! LOL It worked though.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Carpenters as much as I LOVE hoyas! Between the records and plants, it's hard with limited space!

Yeah, it's difficult deciding which hoya I'm gonna buy next. It's like that song by The Lovin' Spoonful: "Did you ever have to make up your mind?" LOL

I find both pottsii and rigida fairly easy to grow. I've only recently gotten a true pottsii, but I've been growing nicholsonii (which many think is a synonym for pottsii) for a few years (since '05) and it's grown well and flowered nicely. (BTW, the newer pottsii does look exactly the same at this point, though it has yet to bloom.) I got rigida last year as a cutting from Awanda and it's grown nicely. They are very similar - rigida's leaves are narrower and longer, whereas pottsii's are wider and more heart-shaped, and pottsii's get pretty succulent as they age. Here's my nicholsonii flower...

And from what I've seen in photos, rigida's flowers are similar except the corona is a dark pink.

I've tried three different eriostemmas and they're not for me. They do "ok" (not well, exactly) outside in summer, but in winter, they put on new growth that proceeds to drop. Very disheartening!

I've been drooling over CN's H. AH0240 for some time. I just don't have extra money for it, or it would have been sold a month ago!!! hahaha I would go with that one, myself (in case you couldn't tell). :)

Find one you just can't live without and GRAB IT!!!

Hi Maidin,

I posted this picture a few weeks ago...I received in a trade a very cute, just recently rooted cutting with a peduncle that bloomed for me while I was rooting it in my hoya nursery(I left it there till the bloom opened). It's growing and has put out two baby leaves since. I love the leaves and flowers. Some of leaves were red when I got them because they were grown in some direct sun. Now I have it in a shaded area, so the leaves lost most of the reds.

I don't have it but that Hoya rigida sure looks very nice!

Whatever it is, that is a sweet flower. What a determined lil guy. Thanks for sharing.

I e-mailed CN earlier today and told her I made up my mind, I went with the H. AH0240 AND, yes and . . . the H. dasantha. I haven't heard back from her, but I'm sure shes preoccupied with David Liddles passsing.

Here's one of her pics she sent me so I could choose. I did some reasearch on it and SQR and Ms. Burton say it's a good bloomer (this time of year) and a fast grower. . . ching ching

Thanks Maidin...went on a short vacation...had one incident with my H.Merrilli(severe sunburn)long story,lol. I had to trim 80% of the leaves :o( Does anyone know if they grow back like other houseplants when pruned this bad?

Sorry...I meant to put the name, it is a H. pottsii, it is a very cute plant.

Congrats on your decision...sounds like you made the right one. Enjoy!

Hi Maid,

I am having trouble deciding which of these hoyas to get:

H. motoskei
H. fungii
H. pub. "Red Buttons"
H. pub. "Royal Hawaiian Purple"
H. diptera

I like these because they are easy growing and (execpt for the pubicalyxes) easy blooming. I want a hoya that will make my friends go ooh-and-aah at the flowers. The only problem I have is I can only have one more! It will be in a hanging basket in a southern exposure (indirect).
Probably won't get it until around Christmas or so.
Good news for you all! The mealy problem has been minimalized! Will continue to watch for those little plantwreckers!

If you want your friends to go ooh and aah at the flowers, then get H. onychoides. An easy plant to grow and bloom and spectacular, large reddish-purple flowers. The leaves are really beautiful on this plant and it's not too expensive either.

I have found H. pubicalyx 'Silver Pink' (Pink Silver?) to be very free flowering. My plant blooms and then a new set of buds forms right after the last set has dropped. I had this plant blooming all summer and the fragrance at night is unbelievable.

H. motoskei is really the "true" H. carnosa and H. fungii is almost identical to motoskei and carnosa, flower wise. If you have any of the carnosas at all, skip these altogether.

Both Red Buttons and RHP are very nice, but the older foliage is very similar to the regular carnosa. New foliage is very nice and the flowers are a pretty dark red.

I can't comment on diptera since I have not grown that plant, but I think the flowers are yellowish in color.

You might also want to check out some of the plants with spectacular foliage like H. callistophylla or Hoya finlaysonii. Beautiful out of bloom and pretty flowers too.

Brad I am with Mike in that you should go for an impressive species. Hoya onychoides or Hoya megalaster are very impressive in both flower and the plant itself. Hoya meredithii, finlaysonii and callistophylla have beautiful leaves but fairly shortly lived flowers that are often quite small but the plants really do make up for that. Hoya macrophylla, polystachya and their close relatives are also very attractive plants.
If you really like Hoya carnosa then Hoya fingii would be a nice addition because it is very similar but has significantly larger leaves and flowers.
Hoya diptera is a nice plant but according to a book I have it is not a heavy bloomer and the plant itself is quite plain.

Ok, the decision is in. . .

I went with H. AH0240 and H. dasyantha. From what CN said, the H dasyantha has peduncles. She said it may bloom this winter!! Thats wishful thinkin, of coarse.

I ordered a H. montana few weeks ago too. (She got busy and forgot to send it) so that will be shipped with these two.

It's gonna be like Christmas at my house. . . :)

Brad, I don't know anything about the ones you mentioned. I will be getting cuttings of H. motoskei and H. pub 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' later this week from a nice member here. I think they are both pretty plants (I like woody, viney plants) and again, I go for foliage b/c I have to look at that far more often that I get to look at Blooms.

It's hard to make a decision, but fun at the same time. And whatever you don't get this time can go on your *wish list* for later.

The finlaysonii's have wonderful showy veined leaves. It's always a hit and people notice the veining and ask what it is.
Your right there is always next time or the time after and so on. hahaha.

My Pink Silver has yet to bloom for me as it is a small plant but it did have a large vine on it that I cut off into three sections and are currently rooting (at least one of them has) and will place them back in the pot with the mother plant. Since I already have a KQ and a cutting of carnosa, I don't think I will get fungii or motoskei.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Will continue to browse for now! Some of those hoyas do have beautiful flowers and I read the megalaster has a rose-like scent!

I have to add I am limited on space so it cannot be a large plant. I guess onychoides, megalaster, and the rest will have to go on my wish list. When I get a place of my own someday, I'll have a big glass greenhouse to fit all of my plants in! I was looking at the plants at Gardino's and saw a few others I was interested in. Limoniaca seems to be one that fits me the most. Like I said before, I will not get a new plant until Christmas or so. I still have plenty of time to make up my mind!

In zone 6, I'm guessing that most nurseries won't ship in December. You should contact Gardino's to find out if they will ship at that time of the year.

H. onychoides is not really that large of a plant. I've had one since the late 70's and have just re-started the plant if it got too big or if it got mealies (usually re-started due to the latter!)

Mike, is the fragrance on onychoides very strong to you?
I read it has a gardinia-like fragrance. Are there many umbels open at once on your plant? Mom has a sensitive nose and can't take strong scents (IE: certian kinds of laundry detergent, perfume, and flowers...)or pollen. Not that she would be around the plant all the time. That's why I'm afraid to get an australis.

P.S. The flowers on onychoides are beautiful! They do look like claws! Perfect if it bloomed for Halloween!
Checked out Gardino's to see if they ship during winter; they do, but "have no guarantee on plants shipped during cold weather."
