Hello everyone :) Missed you!!!

Hello old timers and newbies!!! I've been away for a while but have been lurking and just haven't been able to post very much so to changes in work schedule and other responsibilities. I am still growing plenty of hoyas purchased and swapped from many of you all on this site. Some plants have done better than others and some didn't make it, but I don't give up until I kill at least three;) I just want to let all the new folks know that this forum has the best members so don't worry about looking elsewhere for hoya assistance or just some great people to chat plants with. And to all the old timers, I've missed you guys and will be sure to start being active again. I've had some new bloomers this year including 'Merrili', Pachyclada, Obovato, and Obscura(oh so worth the wait). Also all the tries and true hoyas have bloomed as usual such as Numms(last fall), all my Lacunosa and Carnosa, Wayetti, DS-70, Brevialata, Davidcummingii, Multiflora, and Linearis. I hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to getting to know all the new members that I haven't spoke with in the past. Take care and have a great evening/morning depending on your locale.

Greetings 7a to 7a! I'm a total newbie, so welcome back and glad to meetcha. The great people on this forum are graciously helping me along. Got my first cuttings from Joni week before last and haven't killed any yet. There is hope...

You have a lot of plants to trade. You must have a huge property - or a very crowded one! ;-)

My stepson gave me a break tonight so I get to sleep in my bed for the first time in 3 weeks,I am so tired,hopefully I will be able to sleep,I am so excited to be home I feel like its all new,but it sure need a good dusting,lol.Oh well I am just glad to be in my dusty home.Thank you all for your prayers,we still have a way to go,Mom has a OT twice a week a PT 4 times a week,and a nurse twice.She has had a rough go of it,she had blood clots in her legs,heart,and lungs.The Dr's went in and put a screen like thing in to break up the clots she was throwing,so hopefully once she gets her strength back,things will get close to normal. I sure hope everyone in Tx is okay the storm looked bad. Love you all. Bonnie

so you can't come to the raleigh spring swap? that's really too bad. i can't imagine not being able to check gw- i'd have the green shakes for sure! glad the water plants are still hanging tough for you. i still have 3 of the 4 koi you brought me. the pure yellow one had a spine defect and dissappeared after about 6 months. the others are doing well & getting bigger. my pond pump died late last summer and i still haven't replaced it, so the ponds are pretty yucky looking right now (as if they look great most winters anyhow), but am ready to get to cleaning & getting it running again. didn't seem to bother the fish, though- i don't think i lost any over the winter. hope your situation changes for the better soon. take care & keep in touch! tammy

Thanks Eloise. The surgery is actually firmly scheduled, by the doctor's office, but they have to send paperwork to Workers Comp and they evidently, as of last Thursday, haven't done it. I'm going to call tomorrow, and if it isn't there, I'm going to call the Dr.'s office and tell them that I expect it Fed Ex'd overnight air, and if it isn't there by Wednesday, I will change doctors. It's unacceptable the way that doctor's staff is. I changed my phone number MONTHS ago, called them and gave them the new one, then checked to make sure it was changed when I went for my next visit, and then they said they didn't have my number, and so we missed a vital communication. I can't understand how they could be so slack, and his patients haven't dumped him yet. I'm sure some have. He's a great doctor, but his staff leaves much to be desired. Kay, unfortunately, the plants I grow, at least most of them, won't grow in the panhandle. Mine are mostly tropicals and subtropicals, and you're going to be in a colder place. Yes, it gets VERY cold in the panhandle. No snow or anything, but temps below freezing, for sure. Sorry about that :(. But thanks for the offer!

wow, it's been forever since i popped back into this forum and i was reading through the threads and found this one that i posted 2 years ago. what a blast from the past! update on situation... in november of 2004 my ex contacted me (no surprise, he needed money). i sent him the money with the demand that i be allowed to contact my son and see him. it was difficult, but i made the decision that what has happened, happened, and i did not pursue any type of legal action on his disappearing with my son. nothing can bring back the time i lost with my boy, i figured all i could do was move forward from that point in time where we reestablished contact. i am happy to say that my son spent last summer with us, and again this past christmas. it hasn't all been easy, my older son wants nothing to do with his brother and refuses to be in the house when his brother is here (older son went out west to visit his father last summer while younger son was here, same at xmas time) i remember long ago during mediation the counselor used the term "polarized" regarding my boys, i didn't really understand what it meant at the time, but now i think i do. i'm hoping over time the boys will come together as brothers and that they can overcome the damage that their father has done to their relationship. it's almost summertime again, and i am looking so forward to having my now 15 year old son back in my home for a couple of months. his little sister adores him and she misses him terribly when he leaves to go back to his father. my son is not happy with his father, he has expressed a longing to come live with us (and since he is over the age of 14, in the state he lives in, he would be able to go into court and tell the judge which parent he wants to live with) , but the feud with his brother is getting in the way. i would love to find a way for these boys to get along and try to find some sort of neutral ground, and then i could put my family back together again completely. in the meantime though, i treasure every visit and phone call with my son and i thank god every day that my boy is back in my life. :) jiggreen

Hey Mitzi! Is spring coming up soon? Summer is almost over here.

Lesly - The hoya bug is easy to get bitten by, so sometimes it is easy to over whelm oneself. Especially in the winter without a greenhouse. The hoyas that make it through every winter inside I consider the tough bunch and I am happy to grow those. Isn't Joni awesome?

Mary - nice to meet you as well and best of luck growing. You seemed to amass a great collection.

Susan - I've just kind of been hunkering down with all the cuttings I acquired. As we all know some grow almost immediatelly and some just sit there for a season or two. I recently was able to make cuttings to fill out a lot of pots that just had that single vine going straight up a bamboo shoot. I also lost about a half a dozen in a 'derecho' that we had a couple months past, I hope you didn't get much Susan.

Mike - I thought Obscura smelled like a fruitier version of Lacunosa. Not quite Fruit Loops but close. Do you know if all Subcalva are scented like grapes or if it is only a specific variety or IML #?

BTW - I've got some serpens (probably) true seedlings that are just getting big enough to mail. Let me know.

I say probably cause the lady that sent me the seeds didn't pollinate herself, she doesn't remember if any other Hoya was in bloom, but she doesn't think so.

I think my large vigorous variety of Hoya obscura smells like fruity perfume, just love that plant. My smaller grower with the flowers that are more orange does not have as many flowers or as fragrant flowers as the larger grower.
I have yet to flower subcalva but they should all smell relatively the same. There can anyway be plants that produce more or less scent as well. This has always been one of the Hoyas that really hates the change in seasons. My plant drops leaves every year and is a pain in the butt at times.

Welcome back, David...I sure have missed reading your postings..but, I'm glad it wasn't due to something bad. I tend to worry when folks stop posting for a number of weeks..glad to hear that you're okay. Good job with blooming those hoyas..I've never gotten my H. linearis to bloom...it grows rapidly, but no inclination to bloom. Glad you're back! Fondly, Patrick

Welcome back, David! Congrats on all of the blooms :). It's funny, obscura was one that didn't do so well for me, but I just *might* have to try it again one of these days. Right now, I'm all out of room and it's hard to believe that in a month or two, my Hoyas and other house plants will be back inside. Again, welcome back! Looking forward to seeing you post more!
