They're Here! (in Connecticut)

Like clockwork, our first male ruby throat arrived over the weekend. He drank from our feeder every ten minutes and set up a guard post on a thin leafless twig at the top of one of our crab apple trees (this is always a favored perch!). Every year, I have hummers arrive within a day or two of May 1. Their arrival usually coincides with the blooming of a large Red Bud tree in our yard. Other early spring draws for our Ruby Throats include Red Buckeye which is about to flower and trumpet honeysuckle.

Always a joy to see the first one of the season!
