what are some good tropical plants to attract humming birds?

double points if you can give me some plants to keep mosquitoes away as well. (minus points if its citronella)

Where are you? It must be somewhere relatively warm, but how much rainfall do you get?

I just had an encounter out back -- I was putting a few things out to dry to take advantage of the weather, and I heard the familiar "Chip" of an Anna's. She came down within a foot of my face to get a better look. She then went to feed off of some succulents I have - an aloe with red tubular flowers and a dudleya. Pretty amazing up close like that.

voodoobrew, I've tried liquidy bad fruit a few more times for my butterfly population on perfect weather days, and still just ants for me, too, while the butterflies went about their time at the flowers oblivious to my offering. I should keep trying, though, especially now that the hummingbirds are here too and might be interested.

LOL! I remember one spring when my sister visited with her golden lab. Both the seed and syrup feeders are on the deck. We kept the dog on the deck, too, during sunny days and the finches drove her crazy because they kept swooping down to pluck fur from her coat. I hope they were lining their nests with it, not just annoying and teasing her! On top of that the hummers would dip down and hover at nose-level to chit and scold.... (I like mastiffs... big but calm.)

Hummers visit most of my flowering plants. I sit on the porch and watch them go from plant to plant, no matter what the color is. One spent a lot of time on the huckleberry bush one day. The next day I was weeding beside it and he came and hovered about a foot away from my face and stayed there quite a while, so I moved away from the plant and he moved in to feed. Bossy little guy. :)

Turk's Cap or also known as Malvaviscus arboreus. We have had multiple humming birds be attracted to Turk's Cap. Chop it back in the winter and it will re-grow for the summer.
