The Merry, Merry Month of May...

May is a pretty nice month here and it's almost gone. Today is rainy so I thought I'd post some pictures.

The first pic is all about May, Pink Knockout rose and Ballerina rose going crazy with a big purple smoke bush (upper right) and a viburnum blooming, with hostas below

Finally a good year for Super Nova, hardly any spring dessication burn this year though it is sporting or reverting to blue

What was started as a mini bed around a birdbath with Rainbow's End in front

And I could go on for awhile but last, hostas under the Emerald Pagoda tree, I love this tree, fragrant white flowers in spring

So pretty Shade, everything is so lush looking. I have the Knockouts too and enjoy them so much.

Lovely! It was your picture of Niagara Falls that inspired me to plant one of my own.

Hi Everyone! Rose, my guess is 13 for the planter contest. My box arrived from Vina today, and it was very, very nice! Loved the butterfly stickers on the box! Vina sent me: Blue Mouse Ears, a mini hosta, YEA!, which is already planted in between the tiarellas; A Columbine William Guiness, very pretty, and already planted; A pink Obedient plant, an Agastache Honeybee Blue and a Rudbeckia Herbstonne, all of which have been potted up awaiting decisions on where to put them! Also received a beautiful, orange daylily called Kwanza! Vina, thank you so much for sharing these plants with me, I am very pleased! Well, I have to have Willie, the cat, at the Vet's at 7:30 tomorrow morning, so I'd better start doing bedtime stuff! Talk to ya all later! Shirley!

Sorry - I looked carefully for a new thread on May, was surprised not to find one, and started my own when I did not. However I now see that there is one after all under the 'maypole' title. It probably works best if we all use the same one, so please let this one fall. I'll move my post over to the other.

Ordered my favorites that I had in my English garden that do great here: 4 x Marie Van Houtte 4 x Mme Joseph Schwartz 8 x Clothilde Soupert 4 x Mignonette 8 x Pink Soupert 8 x Pink Pet (Caldwell Pink) Now that I'll have the symmetry with roses (as they go into their own sections of the parterre) I can be filling in with one off.s I used to buy lots of roses from the Vintage Gardens, but as I did not kept the tags, I did not know (except for the obvious ones) which ones the good/safe ones were. Kept as many of them during the demolition.

Very nice garden pictures. I like the Emerald Pagoda flowers so much I looked it up. Not hardy here - poor me! All the georgeus Japaneese Maple bushes people have posted pictures of makes me extremely jealous.

Poetry and pictures-what more could one ask? The garden and your hostas look fabulous, shade!

Noticed yesterdat that my Empress Wu and Viking Ship are already blooming!

And Manyhosta those are wonderful words for May. Yesterday the sunrise was absolutely beautiful, the sun looked huge and glowing orange, just a nice May morning.

Sandy aren't the Knockouts great? My husband swears the pink one has a fragrance but for the life of me I cannot smell it. So now when he exclaims over the scent I just pretend to be able to detect it ;-)

Fence so happy to hear my NF enabled you, lol. Niagara Falls is always one of my favorite hostas.

McT I guess they wouldn't work for you. The Styrax Emerald Pagoda is borderline zone 5. Unless you were to opt for a container to move it to a sheltered spot for winter, just a thought.

Cyn, yes I'm seeing the same here, not my Empress Wu yet but others are already sending up their bloom scapes. Everything is so early here this year.

That first picture is a knockout!

Everything seems to be early for me too, I'd say more than half of my hostas have scapes coming up.

Hey, Shade, great pics. 2 questions: in the second photo, what is the plant on the left with the dark "necklace"? And is that Guardian Angel to the left of Kikutii? I, fortunately, still have room for more hosta and your pics inspire me to find Climax, Satisfaction, Olive Bailey Langdon, Super Nova . . .

Phil you are right, it is Dawn's Early Light, I like that hosta, I think I planted it three years ago.
Tomahawk the plant with the "necklace" (love that description)
is persicaria, or somtimes called tovara, the variety is Painter's Palette, gets cream, green and pink coloring to the leaves and pretty almost beaded looking red flowers late in the season. It self sows like a demon but is fairly easy to pull out. I like it for a groundcover or filler. Yes that is Guardian Angel. You might want to skip Super Nova, most years it doesn't look so hot and it is a s-l-o-w grower.
