Have you heard this hosta saying?

Yesterday I was plant shopping at the Flower Factory. My friend and I both had hostas in our cart (of course). Some lady walks by and says to her companion, "You know what they say about people who buy hostas? They have no friends." I thought maybe I misheard her, so I asked my friend if that's what she heard. Sure enough, that's what she said. I wished I would have had a hosta club flyer on me, as I would have handed it to her and invited her to a meeting.

Anyone ever heard that one before?

Later on we ran into her again, and she told her companion that one side of the Flower Factory was all annuals and one side was all perennials. There are no annuals at the Flower Factory, so that only showed she was not a true plant person.

I think she has it wrong. People who don't buy hostas have no friends - lol. How rude was she! Of course if she doesn't know an annual from a perennial then she doesn't know too much.
I'm jealous, we won't get to visit the FF this year. Had to make an emergency trip to Wi in Feb this year.

I believe the lady was more than a little confused. In fact the hosta is often refered to as the friendship plant, because it's so easy to share with friends and even total strangers!

You have a very nice plant! One of my two 'Sum and Substances' gets it fill of sun and performs also well with watering every few days when there is no rain. S&S progeny also does well. I read here often that hostas are only shade tolerant and sun is the way to go. That is true when you have a lot of water and time and adds to garden upkeep. That means to newbies that they have frequent watering and time at hand all figured out before planting in sun. Bernd

Elmer- I agree with you, but I have also found that some people just aren't comfortable with technology or are afraid of it, and are baffled by what seems straightforward. When my mother can't get a movie to play on the tv, the instructions I've written for her are ignored and she just starts hitting buttons on the remote until it's thoroughly messed up. My mother-in-law could never navigate to the correct folder to find something she downloaded, and thought that she could only get her email on her home computer. No amount of coaching helped with this sort of stuff. Bottom line: I'd never select a Wow computer for myself, but they seem to have their place....

I stand by my earlier complaint while also acknowledging what sleeperblues said. It is indeed a sad fact that for many people, when money gets tight, medical bills get pushed to the back of the line and frequently don't get paid at all. Unfortunately, those doctors still have a practice to run and employees they must pay, regardless of whether someone has paid their bill or not. I suppose I pine for "the old days" myself. For the majority of my adult life, we lived paycheck to paycheck. We could budget to pay you in installments but we just didn't have a lump sum to give you upfront to pay in advance. Hubby and I have managed, over the past 10 years, to work our way out of that lower class (paycheck to paycheck) predicament into a solidly middle class status. Before that, it was (largely) an honor system. We promised we would pay what we could, when we could, until the balance was paid; the doctors took us at our word AND we fulfilled our obligation. Unfortunately, too many have gamed the system for too long and now, an increasing number of doctors and facilities require full upfront payment. Luckily for me, I've established a rapport with my regular physicians and dentists and they KNOW I'm "good for it" and they allow me to get needed services and pay out over time if I need to. I worry for my children though. It has taken years of seeing the same practitioners before we reached a comfortable spot that I could get what I need and they know I won't shaft them. What will my kids do in 15 years if they are just starting out and can't afford 1000 upfront for, say a root canal and crown?

Maybe that is what she was really trying to say? Maybe what she really meant was people who buy hostas don't have friends, because otherwise their friends would be giving them hostas?

Hey Pam, FF has really raised their prices this year. Everything went up $2-3, but it still won't stop me from visiting. They have so many plants that no one else has. Although I would love to go in those back greenhouses that look abandoned and filled to the brim with hosta. I'm sure I could find a few in there I would like.

How rude!!! Especially to say it loudly enough for you to hear! You're a better person than I - I would have had something to say to her about that, and would have corrected her about the annual info she was spouting about. What a horse's patoot.

I'm not surprised prices are up. What can you do, everything cost more. They should let customers pay for an hour of digging in those overgrown greenhouse. Keep everything you can dig up, and they would get the greenhouse cleared out.

Lighten up! It's a common "jokey" thing that hosta are a plant that is given away and if you have to buy it you don't have friends to give it to you. It's "The friendship plant".
Now in recent years, since the proliferation of all the new cultivars, the "hosta craze" so to speak, more people are buying palnts.
But...I have received many hundreds of $$ of gift hosta from friends amd have given away an equal amount of plants. Last week I gave a friend enough hosta to plant a 20 foot area around his pond, including Krossa Regal, August Moon, September sun, Antioch, Golden edger, Strip tease, Queen Josephine,Wide brim and a few others.
She was not rude....she was passing on a friendly bit of folk lore...
As I said lighten up....if you are looking for rudeness you are sure to find it!

Hmf.
Seems like since I started hosta-ing, I've grown to have more friends. Especially the ones who say, "when you're ready to divide, you let me know!"

She did not say it jokingly, she was rather rude. Which is why my friend and I were so offended. It wasn't until I really thought about it, I realized what she might have really been trying to say.
