midnite hummer at feeder-Los Angeles

what's up with this little cutie? just as I was going to bed tonite, just before midnight, I noticed this bird was at the feeder. I took a couple of pics, and watched the bird drink a little. I have never seen one spend the night at a feeder before. I hope it's not sick, does anyone know?

I never get tired of seeing the kind of shots you have. Being in the midwest I havent had any for about 4months now. I get swarms similar to what you have in the evening during july and august and btw is it dark when those shots were taken. Only once or twice have I seen two on one port as is shown in the photo as ruby throats which is the only hummer we get, is not as sharing as some your birds.

Thanks, Michelle, but I don't think it's the weather here in sunny Los Angeles. I'm still seeing one or two a day, which makes me think the others were just flying through. But it was really great while it lasted! I saw the neatest thing today though, one of my "regulars" was buzzing around my japanese boxwood collecting spiderwebs to build his nest. I'd never seen that before, so I was really excited.

I had a hummer fly over to investigate the racket the starlings were making at the suet feeder (and boy, were they ever noisy). I've had them check out the goldfinches at the thistle feeder. Another time, a chickadee wasn't doing a darn thing, just sitting on a branch in the maple tree, minding it's business. I saw something buzzing by it, side to side, it was just weird. My eyes finally adjusted to see that it was a hummer. Just recently, the hummer went over to the suet feeder (I have a seed cake in it currently) and was torturing a chickadee, and eventually chased it away. I have lots of birds at that suet feeder lately (woodpeckers, cardinals, sparrows), but for some reason, the chickadee's seem to be targeted by my hummers!

Hi, Scaldude. It's no trouble -- it is, after all, a discussion forum. Your ice cream and orange juice freezes fine because your freezer compartment probably goes down to 10 degrees F. On the coolest setting, my freezer can go down to 0 degrees but I keep it around 15. "Any foreign substance added to water will cause a freezing point drop. For every mole of foreign particles dissolved in a kilogram of water, the freezing point goes down by roughly 1.8Â°C. Sugar, alcohol, or any chemical salt will lower the freezing point. Salt is used on roads and walkways because it is inexpensive and readily available." Anecdotally, the 4-to-1 mix seems to freeze around 28 deg F. The 3-to-1 mix starts getty mushy about 24 deg F. The sugar concentration in 3-to-1 mix is comparable to a few flowering plants and therefore not harmful to hummers, particularly when there isn't much else around to choose from.

Penny I think you are right, this must be a migrator, but harryshoe could be correct, I'm right above the sunset strip, so this hummer may have been out clubbin'. lol
I hope it got some rest, it was gone this am.

Looks like he's sleeping/featherfluffing; when you saw him drink, did he act dopey or like he was struggling? Sometimes I see the males really beating the crap out of each other here, running right into one another with bill etc. and then later I'll find somebody dead on the ground, sadly amazing 'cause there ain't much to find. (Brag) we've had a permanent (year round, no migrations) Rufuous colony, as well as the expected Anna's here since before the heavy rains last year and they do hit the feeder until dark (there are lights nearby which may assist their cheating) but even though there are adjacent perches I've never caught any overnighting on or adjacent feeder.

I believe she was fast asleep, I didn't detect any movement for about an hour, at which time I opened the door and took some pics. The flash may have disturbed her, and it was at this point she started feeding again, but it was slow, and she did not fly away. definitely groggy, like I am when I'm rudely awakened. I lookied again tonite, and no one is camping at the feeders - this was certainly an odd occurrence.
