what hostas do well with 3 hrs of hot sun?

Tricky garden conditions in my yard give me shade all day except a 3 hr blast of the hot midday sun. I'm looking for some tried and true hosta or other perennials that will thrive in those conditions.

I read sum and substance was very sun tolerant, but mine already looks like its yellowing due to too much sun.

So far what I have that seems to be working are rozanne geranium, lambs ear, gold euonymous, royal standard hosta, liatris, anenome, lady's mantle, iris, coneflower, oak leaf hydrangea, boxwood, perennial foxglove, sedums, heuchera, and a mystery hosta with yellow edged leaves.

Plants that have not worked out are cranesbill, pulmanaria (both wilt) some hostas.

Don't forget to to give plenty of extra water to hostas in the sun.

I have Patriot, gold standard, halycon, plantaginea and another tiara type (non variegated, don't know the name), in full sun and they've all performed well for me.

Don't plant them in sun in the heat of summer. Plant early spring or late fall to allow them time to establish.

Typically, the variegated forms are supposed to hold up to the sun better. The brighter yellows and predominantly white hostas are less likely to handle too much sun.

Lamiums do well in sun to shade.

Annabelle Hydrangea would work well too.

I looked them up for you. All three can be grown in your zone; thus, overwintering should be fine if you can find and follow the specific recommendations. The general plant care info below is not specific to container growing conditions for these tall deciduous shrubs and evergreen tree. Clethra alnifolia (summersweet) has definite climate and soil preferences: Need acid soil (low pH) similar for rhododendrons and azaleas. Full sun in cool gardens. Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry): Not sure but red chokeberry can grow in any soil and full sun. Tsuga canadensis (Canadian hemlock): Conferous evergreen - no need to overwinter Acid soil w/ ample moisture High summer humidity Protection from hot sun/wind Tall in native eastern states but there are dwarf varieties.

I have serviceberry that I planted on a whim so it ended up in a more shady area and gets about 4 hrs of sun a day. Mine is like a shrub than a tree. I have mostly neglected it. It's a 3 yrs old skinny bush that's about 3-4 ft tall and has not flowered. This year, it has something like aphids on some leaves and many leaves are discolored from some kind of disease. I need to pay more attention to it. My friend planted the same variety in full sun. That tree's growth is healthier and more upright than mine. Growing peach without much sun could invite more fungal and bacteria diseases. Generally speaking, peach has more "issues" than apple. I don't have paw paw but have heard that it is for "acquired taste." You may want to try paw paw fruit to see if you like it before planting one. Why don't you plant an apple tree and your neighbor plant something else? If there are crab apple trees in your neighborhood, you'll all set with cross pollination.

Hi tomatotomata, Neither am I :) I think some varieties of daylily might do well there, and they have a tropical look. Have you tried them? My sister-in-law has a really tall one called Acupulco Nights that is dark maroon- almost black. That would look nice with white agapanthus. Impatiens will flower in those conditions, but they require so much water. I have also found sword ferns do just fine in some sun if they have time to get acclimated, and the evil spreading Sprenger Asparagus fern is good in any shade or sun exposure. Succulents would do well- they probably would not get burned in three hours. I also have bromeliads in a spot where they get about an hour of direct sun, and they have done fine. Off the top of my head: Sanguinelli Blood, Tarocco, Moro, Budd Blood, Smith Red, Vaniglia Sanguigno, Valentine(Pumello), Red Vaencia, and Cara Cara (lycopene). I mighthave a couple more that I am not remembering and I have multiples of some and a few Moro and Tarocco from seed. I think they all have gotten fruitlets and several have developed mature fruit but they are all still small trees so not a huge amount of fruit yet. I was hoping for a lot of fruit this year as the trees have been doing well even after the greenhouse overheat in April, but something keeps eating or stealing the fruit when they get about 2 inches in diameter. It is quite frustrating. I never had problems other years so it must be something new to my yard. I have chipmunks for the first time this year, but the fruit seem to large for them to take. I had a second Tarocco, but it died suddenly for no reason I could ever figure out. It's twin is still doing fine and they were next to each other in the greenhouse when the one started dying almost overnight. I had a cocktail grapefruit/pumelo die like that also. I am wondering if that is a rootstock compatibility issue when that happens or maybe the graft fails. The Cocktail made 5 ripe fruit last winter and suddenly died overnight. It had fruited at least twice before that and was a strong grower. It was one of my largest trees. Again, I don't know why it died. It did not seem to be prone to scale, spider mites, aphids or other bugs. The rootstock still looks alive, but it has not sprouted at all. I have been waiting all summer. The Tarocco rootstock sprouted some kind of trifoliate and I now have a fairly large tree to graft onto when I get brave enough and find the time to try grafting. I have the same condition...areas of my driveway garden get sun from about 12 pm to 3 pm...(full shade in before 12 pm and dappled light after 3 pm.) Probably the hottest part of my garden, it's a 6' strip between the house and asphalt!

I'm having success in that area with every hosta I've planted there:
guacamole
hippodrome
wide brim
moonlight
I'm not the best at watering, but this area is close to my hose spigot and it's the first area I hit with water, so I've only gotten a touch of burn on the guacamole when I was gone for 1 1/2 weeks in July. I use full-sun companion plants in that strip: sedum, rudbeckia trilobum, beebalm...it's fun to have the hostas with sun loving companions.
Same area but slightly shaded by a large airy arborvitae:
krossa regal
hadspen blue
halcon

Pulmonaria did not work for me, either, I tried it under the arborvitae, they really like more water.

If you want an awesome cover, try bigroot geranium...I have that mass planted across many areas: full sun, full dry shade, the area by the Krossa Regal I just mentioned, under maples...it is my absolute favorite perennial for ease and beauty...after hostas, of course.

Not invasive at all but fast growing. I use it as filler in pots, too.
