What's happened to these hosta?
Comments (7)Thank you all for the feedback....here's more info to clarify... These plants were fine for the last four years, well, they were young and growing into there mature size, but normal otherwise. This is the first spring these 2 have exhibited such unusual growth. They were transplanted 2 years ago, so perhaps I buried them deeper than I should have. I don't see the pips during winter, so maybe that is the case. I'm not sure it's weather related. We've had some cold overnights this spring here in my area of Maine, but the other hostas in the bed, including another S&S are looking normal. BTW, these hostas are all planted in a raised bed around a birch and some sort of conifer. I don't think we have voles.... what evidence would there be? I guess the best thing to do is dig them up and see what's going on....See Morewhat is happening to my hostas?
Comments (11)Hey Sparkle:( I see somebody still remembers Dick Tracy) Are your Hostas planted under any large trees? Hostas like alot of water, and with the drought we have been having this Summer, it is hard for them to get enough water. The trees are sucking up just about everything that goes into the ground. The majority of my Hostas are not very happy this Summer. I water every single morning almost for two solid hours. I thought that may be to much, however when I started watering even more, some of my Hostas started recovering. When it is as dry as it has been many trees root systems head for the surface area to catch moisture. Has Hostas are fairly shallow rooted, they will dry out easily with all this heat. I fertilize all my garden Monthly with Miracle Grow and everything seems to be doing well, except my Hostas. I began increasing the water I give them, and they have perked up....See MoreWhat happened while I was gone for a week....
Comments (6)I did break down and use an insecticide on a very large flowering bush once, (forget the name of the bush, worked immediately stopping further damage and the bush recovered quickly. Normally I'm out looking at my roses frequently during the week so I can catch them quickly, just pluck the little buggers off and squash them. I have read neam oil works but you have to make sure that you are soaking the underside of the leaves, as it works by smothering....See MoreWhat happened to the Hosta Hybridizers Forum?
Comments (1)It appears that the forum software they are using is very old, and the server is likely using a newer version of the php software that isn't 100% compatible. Unfortunately with facebook taking all the traffic these outside forums are simply not seeing interest any longer. And it is unfortunate that some of the forums chose to keep their info locked away only for registered/logged in users so even the info gets lost, just like the info that is posted to facebook. :(...See MoreUser
