Methinks I have one with the plague

A 'friend' gave me two Olive B. Langdons today - was thrilled until I looked closer. She got them at Home Despot (sic) and while they're a nice size for six bucks, both have a leaf or two with very slight 'blisters' - hardly raised much, yet they are there. And only in a small area about two inches by an inch. Also a little shinier than the rest of the leaf. I thought HVX was more distinct, e.g. streaking, something possibly 'whitish'. I guess I should take a pic but I just got a new pc with Vista and am going crazy resizing pics! Soooo - guess I take it to the county extension service - if you guys think it could be the dread disease. Don't want to panic if I don't have to.

I don't think you have to resize your pics on your new pc. You can specify the size when you upload them to Photobucket. I have mine set to upload at 640 x 480. Once you've set that option, it will upload at that size until you change the setting. I think that's a good size...but others on the forum can let us both know if my pictures are too big.

A photo of the plants would help IMMENSELY...

Wow! Finally, pics to go with the horror story you've been telling us, Jen! I gave a small pot of this to my mom in the fall of 2004. But she lives on a little over an acre, and she has most of her plants crowded into the area around the house. She planted this stuff waaaay out front by the road, in her redredred clay soil, and this year, only one little clump (actually smaller than it was in the pot) came up. It still hasn't bloomed, but she's patient. Maybe it just REALLY loves your (amended) soil? Brenda

Mentally, I'm recovered. LOL. This was really devastating to me, because I'd never had such a bad year, but I think I was just overdue. The good news is that I've totally immersed myself in organic ways and have been taking crash courses. I've learned SO MUCH. (Much of it here from everyone...you all are great!) Add me to the 100 percent organic converts now. I never plan to use another synthetic chemical again. This weekend, I'm planning on building my very first compost pile! Yes I am, and I'm so excited about it. I've used compost, but it was always purchased from the store (Lowes and Wal Mart). And I'm thinking about next year. This year is kind of an experience in learning, and I've learned a lot. I had a good crop of tomatoes (Celebrity, Caspian Pink - love those - and Better Boys), but it's about died out now. Usually, I have a regular crop of tomatoes through the first frost (which isn't until Halloween or so). But the tomatoes I got were good, and I didn't have a lot of splitting for the first time ever. I credit that to the HGTV/DIY shows that said add a handful of lime when planting. My eggplants did really well for awhile, and that was fun. I still think I'll get a few more, but everything seems to be winding down. This is very unusual, but I've been hearing it from others around the area. It's just not been a good year for anyone it seems. My gypsy peppers, bless their hearts, are indestructable. They just smiled through the invasion and kept on doing their thing. Lots of wonderful peppers. Those are so fun to grow...and so prolific. My herbs all did really well and are still going. (Except the coriander, but it always dies in the heat) But my fears on the cukes and honeydews came true and they're near death. I got a good crop of cukes before the cucumber beetles invaded. (And I ended up with both striped AND spotted beetles, with a few squash bugs for extra fun) I'm sure it's wilt from the beetles. My melons were all deformed and I think had scab on them. Poor things. LOL. But I'm just letting them keep growing, just in case. I finally cut the oldest melon open, and inside was a small, deformed melon. It wasn't sweet enough yet, but it was a nice color and tasted fresh and springy anyway. I got about three nice bites. haha. I've not grown a successful melon yet, but I'll keep trying every year. Now I'm about ready to head to my local extension office, get my soil tested and see if they can help me decide what to do with my garden over winter. I'm trying to decide between black plastic (which will supposedly kill pathogens by cooking them, but I'm not sure about bug eggs), and a cover crop such as hairy vetch. I'm leaning towards hairy vetch if I do a cover crop. But I'll ask the ext. agent for his/her thoughts on our area. I don't know if the lacewings ever did their work or not. I had fun sprinkling the little hatchlings, like fairy dust. My neighbors might have had a few laughs watching me, because I did prance and sprinkle. (I thought lacewings were the size of moths in adulthood, but now I read they're tiny little things) Next year, I'm probably going to introduce beneficials early, some nematodes and ladybugs. I had a lot of different bugs this year, but my big problems were the leafhoppers (they're still hopping and sucking) and the cucumber beetles. The other good news, and the reason I went organic this year...the birdies! I haven't had tons of butterflies yet, but man do I have many hummingbirds. I finally bought a little feeder that hangs outside my front window, and they come one after another. I've got at least 6-8 that I've seen in a bunch (a gaggle?). And one in particular likes to dance with me, and with my cats, through the window. It's just amazing. I also have a family of cardinals that I've been feeding safflower seeds, and it's been so fun watching their behavior (dad feeding the wife and kids...looks like they're kissing). And one son is starting to turn red...I call him my birdie boy. The others fly away when I approach, but he stays and lets me talk to him, and cocks his head like a pet bird. My family thinks I've lost my mind. LOL. But they're indulging my bird chatter and my new obsession with a compost pile. So that was the longggggggg answer (sorry). Short answer: garden mostly went to hell, but I've enjoyed the birds and intend to keep learning about organic ways. Thanks, Kitty, for asking. ***

Penn, All you have to do is to look at Craig's current thread in the main forum, he's also in Raleigh, to recognize Fusarium as the main rpoblem. And it being a systemic disease Daconil is of no use. But I'm not aware of any Late BLight in the Raleigh area. In the NW part of NC in the hills, yes, but not way East where you are. black discoloration at the leaf joints is quite a normal thing to see and I can't understand how it is killing the stem with no other symtoms being seen. Other diseases that show true stem lesions do have other symptoms. YOu know, I do think I remember it was Keith, aka hortist, who told you to leave Raleigh if you wanted no diseases, but he lives in KC although he did live there, but you've got Craig and Lee and Clay and Judy and others who all live in the Raleigh area with whom you can interact re diseases, etc/ And they often post in the main forum about their plants, etc. Carolyn

I responded to your posting in another forum. Here are my thoughts. There is not one of those critters in focus, so it is difficult to do anything but speculate on what kind of insect they might be. Can't see a head, can't see the top of one of the little things. They do appear to be one of the true bugs, but perhaps a weevil of some sort. The other thing we have to ask ourselves is what these insects might be doing where you found them. Plant bugs are not going to be found in a setting where there are no plants. Insects that predate on other insects are going to located somewhere close to their food source. Insects that feed on animals, seed, wood, etc, are going to be near those sources. If these insects seem to be consentrated in the same areas as your chickens, I would absolutely take some insect samples to your vet, as I suggested before. Inspect your feed, too. Try taking and sending more images, and I'm sure that would help.

Westy it really doesn't sound like HVX.
HVX is very distinctive and I think your OK.
It could just be the conditions in the store. Sometimes they are not placed correctly or watering is not consistant.
The weather also is a factor.
Just keep it isolated in a pot till you can post a picture.

I know it's absolutely useless to not send a pic. Will snap one this weekend and hopefully post for the FIRST time. I won't be returning them unless I know they're sick but now I'm thinking it isn't IT. Am keeping them isolated.

Other events may cloud my weekend - may have to make a decision about putting my cat to sleep - spent tonight at the emergency vet (and crying) - great way to start a 3-day weekend.

Ken - I think you're right about the extension service. I NEVER get the degree of help I want from them - good people but they staff with volunteers who I know don't have a clue about diagnosing plant diseases.

HostaHaven: LOVE your Gilt Edge sport! And thanks for the info - I wondered about that but since I haven't even tried Photobucket yet I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm going open another thread and post info about an upcoming Hosta event at Morton Arboretum - I'll be taking the plants with me for them to look at.

I'm so sorry too about your kitty. I've had cats since my teens and have had to make that decison a few times. It's the hardest one you can make for them. They love and depend on you. This is one last loving thing you can do for them to end their suffering. You gave it a wonderful life.

Oh Westy--I know how difficult it is to make such "decisions", but having had a very much loved cat,
that was suffering, I was greatly relieved for him, that I chose to put it to an end. For me--I was sad,
grieved at not having him, but so thankful that we are given the option to relieve the suffering of a pet
we love so much!!

They go to sleep, to rise again (one day) I truly believe!!! Creation was intended, originally, to never die
and I think that will be the case again--one day!

Sorry about your cat. We had to do that after 19 years. Very difficult to say goodbye to an old friend.

We have Vista, and although I use my Canon software to re-size, you can easily do it after you upload to Photobucket.

When you finally get to see thru the tears, try it.

Westy, so sorry to hear about your kitty... Had to do the same thing at the all-night emergency vet about 4 years ago to my 13 year old cat. We brought her body home with us and buried her out in the woods, near where my brother lives. This might sound terrible, but I cried harder over this cat than I have ever cried over any person's funeral (am I a bad person?) They really do become members of the family... BIG HUGS for you and your cat...

Thanks so much to all you wonderful sensitive Hostapeople who love cats for the well wishes! I absolutely KNOW that people who love Hostas are the best people on earth! I've honestly never met a hosta lover who didn't love cats.

They think he has a brain tumor - he was spurting blood from his ear and they couldn't stop it for a long time - finally stopped and now he's on meds for possible pain and infection and I am to watch him closely for another episode -- and I'm sure that's when I'll have to do the deed. They said he is not suffering yet. I just can't put him down now because he seems fine since they did whatever they did - he sleeps under my hostas and I just want him to be able to sleep there until he's either bleeding or in pain again. For now - we have a few more days - weeks - a month? He talks to me when I'm planting -- chirps.

Buff - I thought I was the only one who cries harder when I lose a pet cat than when I am grieving a person! I wonder what a shrink would say?
