If you could only have just one Salvia ...
Comments (18)I've been avoiding this thread because it's too difficult to answer. :) The salvias that I love for their blooms tend to be short lived... so I'm going to have to answer the microphyllas, greggiis, and all their hybrids (yes, I realize that is more than one, LOL). They bloom here practically all year long, and my hummingbirds adore them. Currently, I really like Shell Dancer. UCB Pink was, I believe, the first salvia I planted in my current garden, and still one of my favorites. I picked a few more up today... one is apparently a new hybrid: Berkeley Barb. Check out the many microphyllas propagated by this nursery, and click links for photos: http://montereybaynsy.com/S.htm...See MoreIf you could plant only one, which one would you choose?
Comments (18)Ciao all- Easy: Opalka, hands down. It's a champ, produces very well and is my machine for just about any tomato product you could make from sauce to V8 juice to ketchup to salsa. I can't say enough good things about this awesome variety....See MoreIf you could only have one: Slow cooker / rice cooker
Comments (26)LindaC, it's all in what you're comfortable with. Remember, I'm the person who has had a couple of house fires and so I don't ever light a fire in the fireplace and I refuse to burn candles. It's my own particular phobia... I do have an old Presto pressure cooker which I don't use a lot but I really like it for certain thins. Elery uses it to make beans, I'd prefer to just dump mine in the crockpot in the morning. I do use it to make chop suey for Ashley, even slightly tough round comes out fork tender. I don't like taditional chili in the crockpot, the ground beef "overcooks". I am a huge consumer of vegetables, though, and sometimes make a vegetarian chili that's delicious. Plus, like Chase, it gets used as a "warming" device for office potlucks, to keep soup warm and even to make oatmeal because I'm not a morning person and would never make oatmeal before I go to work, and I detest the instant stuff. Comments (2)Your question got me to thinking about what we store in our pantry (which is a bit bigger) vs what we store in cabinets in the kitchen. IMHO the great advantage of a pantry is open shelving where everything is in sight. A cabinet would negate that. Mostly we use our pantry for items that either don't fit easily on cabinet shelves (e.g., huge bowl for mixing bread dough; large box of full-sheet-pan sized parchment paper), are heavy to lift (e.g., waffle iron), or are items (like cereal) that are easier to just grab from an open shelf. The added bonus of open shelving is seeing how many boxes of something we have and not over buying at Costco! I also have a couple of smaller plastic boxes for cookie cutters, another box for bagged spices that we buy in bulk from Penzeys, and the two wooden boxes w/ holes that DH made to store potatoes and onions. Many of these are stacked, but still easier to get to in the pantry than in cabinets. A round about way of agreeing with Palimpsest: go for open storage so that you can see what you have and easily get to it. I agree that a counter might be more useful than a cabinet, especially since you said you already have all the cabinets you need....See Morewanna_run_faster
