Hello from Ohio

Hello to all. I just discovered this place and it looks like alot of freindly people here, not to mention a great topic to discuss. Two years ago, I discovered that there are so many hostas out there, and I have been addicted ever since. My collection hails in comparison to many of the photos I have seen here, but I do have 18 different ones. I have a few that came with my house, which I do not know the name of. All are at least 10 years old, but have been split several times. I am not the best photographer, but I thought I would try. Any help is appreciated. Can anyone ID these?

Hi, welcome to the Hosta Forum! You took some nice clear pictures, that's a relief. And 18 is plenty... don't let yourself be led astray by all the bad companions here... Anyway, I'm reproducing your two photos here, and the hyperlink leads to my own 'Francee.'

P1010138, your first photo -- tell me when you find out, I have one just like it that has defeated my attempts to get an i.d. Too many look-alikes.

P1010131, your last photo looks like a 'Francee' to me, except maybe your leaves have more ripple at the edges...?

I am not the best i.d. person here by far... you'll get more confident answers in the morning. :)

i prefer ... that one or two plants be posted directly into a post .... for ID's

i am not familiar with flicker.. so i cant help you there ...

some peeps do too many at once... over too many screens.. and it becomes maddening to flip back and forth.. up and down ... i am usually on the edge anyway ... lol .. so i dont need you pushing me over it ... lol

the green one.. its real young.. and really early in the season .. but try green acres... rather rare in the trade.. or niagara falls ... expensive in the trade ....

but i doubt both .... with giants..which it is .. or will be .. it may take 5 to 7 years to reach full potential ... and be hard to name until we see what it can really do

You're right, I keep getting On Stage confused with Knockout because I got them at the same time. The mis-identified hosta is Knockout. I have two of them, and my other one is only half the size of the one in the photo even though it is older. Same soil, same conditions, I don't get it. Lainey

Hi Phil, It's nice to see you here and thanks for your all support as a fig friend. When the time comes and you need backup starter figs, let me know, I'll share all I can ... ...also, not to rob it in, but... our figs are waking up here in os Angeles and most Biferas are showing Brebas already. It's so beautiful to witness the wakening of figs, every morning I spend a good one hour with all my fig trees as I drink my coffee. Last week we had a wonderful gentle shower that lasted an entire day and warm climate to follow and today is cloudy again, it will rain one entire day starting late tonight and lasting the Sunday... We need all the good rain now. I hide my portable Pakistan Mulberry and Citrus (Navel Oranges, Mayer Lemons and Kumquat) blooming trees under the balcony roof to protect the flowers and their precious pollen from being washed away. and now we wait :)

It looks like I am going to have to find a tutorial on how to post photos directly into a post. Being new here, I don't want to push anyone over the edge... lol

Image P1010131 does look alot like Francee, which I have 2 of. This one appears to be, as Lisa said, more rippled on the edges, plus it is a lighter shade of green than my Francee.

Image P1010138, which Ken refers to, has been in its place for at least 5 years now. It does not get any bigger than this. Stays about 6 inches from the ground, but does have decent size leaves. I may move it to a new location and see if it does better.

Welcome...where in Ohio are you? I'm a fairly new hosta addict too. I have learned so much here. It's a great place when you're deliberating whether or not to buy another hosta. Everyone in here is a wonderful enabler and you won't feel so guilty when you hear how many varieties other people have!

Hey, welcome. I am in Urbana, and there are tons also of us in Dayton. Well, three that I know of.

If you are relatively new to hosta, just give me all of your money now, and I will let you come and look at mine. That way you won't spend hour upon hour going through the hosta library looking for that "just one more this year" hosta. You won't plan your vacations to make sure you "just happen to be a little ways" from some hosta haunt you heard about so "you might at well stop, but only to look. Really, I'm not going to buy any". You won't go through lists of hostas looking for a good name for your next child, dog or cat.

You won't create 'themed' beds of hostas or hosta family tree beds. You won't agonize whether Great Expectations is going to make it this year, and if not, will you try it one more time. (PS: It is worth it!!!)

Hey fellow hosta lover from Ohio! I think I am one of the *3* that Dave was referring to in the Dayton area? I found this hosta forum about 3-4 years ago, when my hosta collection consisted of unnamed varieties given to me by my MIL, and a couple named varieties I bought from a big-box store... Now my collection is over 100 named varieties, still small in comparison to many of the hosta gurus here...

I agree with Dave... just hand over all your money now, cause soon you won't be able to help yourself and well, it won't hurt to buy "just one more..." Pretty soon, you'll find yourself trying to figure out where to make your next new bed, even though you have no shade left, and about 20 hostas in pots waiting for a new home. I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this...
