Will my Hoyas ever rebloom?

birdsnblooms

In 1982, I bought a plant at Jewel (grocery store, labeled Lipstick plant/Aeschynanthus. Although I wasn't sure what it was, I new it wasn't a Lipstick.

Some time in the 90's, I found a picture.

It's Hoya 'silver-pink or H. purpureofusca.

Then, in 1994, while working at a plant store, we got in an unusual plant, one I'd never seen before. It followed me home. lol. It turned out being H. Crinkly.

H. crinkly bloomed several times per year. Siver bloomed a few times.

While reading a plant book, it said, never prune hoyas. You can ruin chances of flowering.

Before reading this information, I'd given several cuttings to people from both Hoyas. Since, neither has bloomed. Both are big plants, rootbound, one in 8", the other in 10" containers.

Perhaps I'm not fertilizing enough, I admit laziness lately. They're in good light, some direct SW exposure, and artificial lighting at night, in winter..

Hoyas are now outdoors.

Because I'd taken so many cuttings, will they never again flower? Flowers from Crinkly were so pretty and fragrant. I miss seeing and smelling clusters of beautiful, waxy blooms.

Any advice? You people here on GW's Hoya Forum are way beyond my league regarding Hoyas. :) I'm sure if anyone knows what should be done next, the info will be found here. TIA, Toni

    Toni,

No, it won't stop the blooming to prune. What is suggested is that you not cut off long, leafless vines because sometimes, they develop peduncles that will bloom. But with 'Pink Silver' (which is a serious viner), I let the vines develop and if they don't produce peduncles or leaves, then I cut them off. But no, taking cuttings, unless you specifically cut off vines with the old peduncles (from which they rebloom), they should rebloom. Even if you gave away the old peduncles, new ones will form.

So, if the plants have continued to grow well, it's probably just that you need to fertilize with a bloom booster. In spring and summer, it would be wise to give it some bloom booster every 2 or 3 waterings. In between, it certainly wouldn't hurt to add some SuperThrive to your water. If your plants are potbound and haven't been repotted in several years, they just need to be fed. I have a 'PS' I've had for many years that's just way too big to ever repot. I give it VF-11 at every watering, use it as a foliar feed, too, and I water it OFTEN because it's so potbound that it dries out very fast.

If you've got them outside, I'm betting with a little encouragement, you'll get blooms soon. Try the bloom booster (high middle number...) and SuperThrive and I bet you'll be pleased.

BTW, there's a big difference between 'Pink Silver' and purpureo-fusca. Here's 'PS'...

(mine is a very "splashy" clone - yours may not have as much silver flecking...) and FYI, official name is H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver'. And here's purpureo-fusca...

It has much larger leaves with somewhat distinct veins. This should help you decide which you have.

And the other you're talking about is probably compacta, but it could be 'Krinkle 8'. Here's 'Krinkle 8'

Compacta is the one with really curled leaves. You can do a google search and find gobs of photos.

    Hi Toni,

Nice to see you! I haven't been growing hoyas for too long, so I will leave the advice to the experts here...but I will share with you my experiences with my few Hoyas that I've taken many cuttings from. I have Carnosa KP, Krimson Princess, Pink Silver, Lacunosa and Royal Haw. Purple. I have given many cuttings to friends, my sister and have traded with some members. I have taken a few cuttings with peduncles on the stem. Luckily for me, All of mine continue to bloom. They grow new peduncles, or new buds form on the old ones.

My guess is maybe its missing some type of nutrient or maybe it just needs more light? Also, you mentioned its root bound, maybe a fresh re-pot will kick it into gear. I'm not sure why its not blooming for you. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be, especially since it has bloomed for you before. Hopefully since you've put it outdoors...I'm sure it will flower for you. Give them a little fertilizer and see if that helps it along. Good Luck!

I will take a photo for you on the one I started from that very plant , the momma you have there)) There si something about yours that just makes me smile so much. Thank you for sharing. The temps not so bad yesterday 70 here. Crazy. Still I have many annuals just pushing growth in pots but after this weekend it will be the end.((( Mike

Do you only have the one? I got addicted when I received one for my 18th birthday from my Great Aunt. It is my compacta. I have since acquired several. Don't have a favorite yet, as most of them have not bloomed. Been dipping into adeniums and growing my own veggies for quite a few years now, so my hoya collection was put on the back burner and I have just gotten back into it. I cannot wait until my meliflua throws out peduncles, it has my favorite blooms. Hubby can't wait until the DS-70 throws out and blooms, he LOVES butterscotch!

JessieTyler, you went to Logees physically though, right? (I know this from facebook). Denise, that may mean selection by size, and that mailed plants ordered sight unseen may be smaller.

I have ordered from them a few times... Let me start by saying they were very eager to please and correspond with me. I live in WI and mail here takes FOREVER. It took a month or more for my orders to get here (with the exception of one order that took 2 weeks for some reason). All orders were packaged immaculately and the plants were HUGE. After a month of travel though the plants were rotting in the box. They were very kind to send replacements and I was able to salvage cuttings from everything except hypolasia (which is a pain in the fanny anyway). I think the more robust leaved species do best and anything with thin leaves is a gamble but I am always game to try! Hope this helps.

It sounds like your plant gets good light so I would also suggest some new potting mix but if the mix looks good then just some dilute fertilizer at each watering.
If one of my plants is not doing well I also check for insects or spider mites and spray plants down with insecticidal soap if I find any.

If none of the suggestions seem to work I would slightly increase the light. How close are the plants from the window?

Howdy...Sorry I haven't been here, but now that our 'daily rain' stopped, and temps are summer-like, I've spent Thurs and Fri afternoon and night hauling remaining plants out. So far about 95% are outdoors..Whew!

Denise, your PS is soooo very beautiful. Mine looks nothing like yours. Sheesh, you sure it's PS? There's so much variegation. I'm envious..lol..

I got the name H. Purpureo from a nursery site. I'd have to snap a pic for definate ID.
After viewing the pic you posted, I don't have Purpureo. Once again, I'm lost..lol..So, what in the world is it? lol..Leaves are long, 3-5", pointed, and when IL has sunshine, (more than a couple days) the silver splashes are pronounced. They might or might not show in a pic.

The other Hoya is definately Krinkle 8..No doubt about it. I have pics on my site, but for some reason, the camera doesn't capture the crinkles, they don't show via my camera. I've taken pics of H. Krinkle 8 before, never did the crinkles show much.

Denise, where did you find your PS? It's astonishing. I'd love to buy one if I can find it..Wow!

The hoyas you posted are yours, right, not something dl'ed from the net?

It's been a while since taking cuttings from any hoyas, especially after reading not to prune. I took their advice literally, now find it strange since taking cuttings they stopped blooming. I have variegated and green Hindu Ropes, both bloom all summer. Hoyas are all in the same windows, SW, so light isn't an issue. I think I have an old pic of HR's..I'll look for a pic on Flickr and post. It's weird because even though there are two HR's, the flowers are different colors..lol

The above pic is Krinke 8..see what I mean about the crinkles not looking crinkly..lol

    {{gwi:74437}}

Above are both HR's..Notice there are 3 different color blooms? Why is that?

Denise, I had several boxes of Bloom Booster, but they got wet and had to be tossed...Here's a list of bloom ferts left. Shultz AV 8-14-6--- Better Gro Orchid Bloom booster, 11-35-15---Dyna Gro Bloom 3-12-6---and Jacks Classics 10-30-20.. Would any be sufficient?
As for ST, I never run out..I keep backup bottles..lol
VF-11 is way too expensive..wow. I thought I read other ferts aren't to be used with Vf-11..Read an article over a year, perhaps it was Messenger??? Do you know?
Denise, do you have more hoya pics?

Hey Pug..How ya doing? Yes, it's been a while. I spilled a glass of Kool Aid on the computer tower..Liquid and computers do not mix. lol. It was a disaster. Finally bought a new puter. Then our neighors tree fell on the front of our house. 2 days later, a car ran into our parked truck..Between all this, we were getting non-stop rain. Hauling plants in the mud is a pain. lol
It's funny, I recall other posts where you say, 'I'm no Hoya expert, haven't been growing them long.' lol..I wonder how many months went by since you originally made that quote..lol
What is Royal Haw? Is it a Hoya? Are blooms purple? Sounds lovely..Do you have pics?
I named the ferts left, hopefully one will work. What about slow-release fert? I admit, I've been lax as far as ST'ing and fertiliZing, but before taking each plant outside, they're showered..then set in an area each will be summered, all this takes time, lots of work..I'm exhausted..lol..plus there's outdoor gardening to do too..with all the rain we've had, weeds are growing 2-3" per day..we just weeded, and already the front, sides and back need more plucking..We don't use weed killers..
I will get my butt outside..fert and ST. lol..
    So how have you been?

Mike..yes, the hoyas get great light..they're right against the windows, plus, during winter, get several hours of artificial light. This year I splurged, bought true plant lights, even though paying high $$ goes against my grain. Two white lights work just as well.
I think fertilizer is the problem. My plants are pest free. Believe me..I mist daily, and inspect frequently..all plants, not just hoyas. I also make a batch of organic insecticide and spray every other week as a preventative. No mites, scale, mealy, whitefly, or any other pest.
I had no idea hoyas were to be fertilized as often as you guys do it. Wow..
How often does everyone fertilize? Toni

Sorry hopefulauthor, I don't have any answers...I just wanted to say that I LOVE those blooms, they are so cute, cannot wait til mine blooms!!! From photos I've seen in the forum, seems like a lot of hoya's have color variations to their hoya blooms, even on the same plant.

Toni plants are like people in that if they are raised form seed each is an individual and will have different characteristics including differences in leaf and flower. Hoya growers tend to trade or propagate from cuttings so you end up with a clone not an individually distinct plant. Hoya pubicalax is a species found in nature but there are many seed raised varieties that were selected for the horticultural trade including 'Pink Silver', 'Royal Hawaiian Purple', 'Chimera' and a few others.

I fertilize with a fertilizer solution of about 200 ppm once a week and then I flush the pots with plain water every three weeks or so, same schedule as for my orchids. If you don't have a TDS meter to measure the fertilizer solution just mix it 1/4 strength.

    Hey Toni,

RHP is Pubicalyx Royal Hawaiian Purple(Hoya). I used to have some purple/maroonish leaves when I had it in the sun for a few hours in the morning, but I have sinced moved it away from direct sun (its been in the mid 90's and it has been very intense)and I didn't want to sunburn the leaves, so I've lost most of the colors. I will give it a little morning sun during fall and winter, so I'm sure the colors will return. I've only had one flower from this plant so far...the flower is a little darker than Pink Silver.

I have a small plant(from a Cutting) of the "Pink Silver" Splash from a dear friend. This one has a lot of splash, my bigger Pink Silver doesn't have anywhere the same amount as that small rooted plant.

    Toni,
I believe the reason for the color difference for those three flower clusters is due to their age.

The flower cluster to the left is the oldest and is fully open; the flower cluster in the middle is just opening and the flower cluster to the right is still in tight bud and has not even started to open yet, so you're just seeing the color of the flower buds.

Since each of the flower clusters is at a different stage of opening, their color may not ever be the same, at the same time. Once each flower cluster had completely opened, however, they should all be the same flower color.

    My .02

    Beautiful plants, BTW.

Jaclyn...your Hoyas will bloom soon enough..Although I'm no expert, what I've discovered about Hoyas, over the years is, keep them rootbound.
My friends mother, (senior citizen,) saved plastic tubs from margerine containers..she potted all different plants in these tubs..No drainage holes, east sun..her hoyas did beautiful..so did an old Poinsettia and Christmas Cactus..lol..Amazing. But the point is, the tubs were 'x' size, hoyas lived in the tubs for years, yet bloomed. So, soon enough yours will, too.

MikeD..Yes, I agree that plants are like people. I don't know how my HR's were propagated. Cuttings/seed. The HR's were bought the same time, from the same seller, on Ebay. I don't think he had a nursery though since he sold other items, non-plant-related.
When you mentioned Chimeras, were you talking about a certin Hoya or Chimeras related to African Violets?
Mike, as for fertilizing, I use half strength. If they recommend 1/2 teas, I use 1/4. On all plants. Moreso with chemical fertilizers. Also, it depends on the soil. Thanks for the site..Very nice..I plan on reading/looking at pics, on the entire site..lol..

Pug, your plants always amaze me... :) Which hoya had purpleish leaves? Do you summer Hoyas outside?
Your cutting is gorgeous...I'm confused..what type is the cutting? Is the second pic the same type of hoya ss the top?

Mike/Tree..You know, I've never noticed the last cluster/buds hadn't opened---dark red...sheesh..Oddly enough, everytime the HR's bloom, (two plants in one pot, variegated and non) flowers are the same colors as the picture, over the years..Because the vines were hanging on a tall shelf, facing the window, it wasn't until hauling to the sink for their wkly shower that I noticed buds and/or blooms.

Another problem. My Hoyas are outside in the gangway..they're not getting as much sun as they would indoors. I fear setting them in front where someone can walk away with them. The back yard is cluttered with plants. Any opinions? Should I bring them back indoors? IMO, plants enjoy being summered outdoors..fresh air, humidity, etc. Any ideas? Thanks, Toni

Thanks Toni, Yes, my large hoyas stay outside for 360+ days a year. My smaller ones live inside and some are in my shaded covered(roof) but open entryway.

The cutting(smaller 1st pic) is a Pubicalyx Pink Silver. The second(larger) is Pubicalyx Royal Hawaiian Purple, that's the one that gets purplish leaves and has a darker flower. They are related...similar yet different.

Hey Pug..you are sooo lucky being able to keep plants out year round..I'm sure they're in heaven..
Which Hoya blooms the most? How many Hoyas do you now have?
Was it you who bought 1 hoya, fell in love, and wanted many many more? lol..This would be about 1 yr back.
Anyway, both cutting and plant are beautiful, but the cutting is fantastic..I hope new growth remains strongly variegated..

Hey Toni, the plants seem to like it outside. I only have to bring it in during the few days of "frost" or hurricane threats...hopefully we won't have any of those this year. Knock on Wood!! If you ask my DH...how many do I have, he will tell you "too many", but I don't have as many as most on this forum, I have duplicates of some. Yes that was me...once I got my first Hoya I was HOOKED! I'm sure I'm like most of the members here...addicted, lol

I can certainly understand you brining plants indoors around hurricane season. My plants go flying when we have windy days. Btw, I too hope there's no canes this year.
    LOL on the dh..
My mailman and dh takes bets on whether or not a package is a plant or something else..lol. The mailmans wife is also a plantaholic. He once told me I'm not in her league. If that's the case, how many plants does she have? 500? 1000? lol
I think we all get in moods with plants..Per mood, I go huntiing for 'x' plants..Lately, it's been rare Dracaenas. I found a couple beautys, Pug. I'm really happy with one called D. goldianna..Ever see one? God, I love it!
I'm also into collecting Aglaos. Aleya has one with all red leaves..I want that plant sooo bad, but have to wait a few months.
I want the Hoya with white margins, too, but we'll see. It's truly stunning..
Anyway, I'm glad you find a nice collection of hoyas..T
