I would not plant it directly into anything without a drain hole. It is just too easy to overwater and kill the plant that way. If it is falling over and that is the only problem, why not just set it into the coffe mug? You can either just set it in or if it is too large, you can put that gravel on the bottom of the mug and then set the plant on top of it. That way, if you do get heavy handed with the water, it is easy to see it, and dump some out.
If the plant is too small for the pot it is in, you can pot it up into something larger (with a drain hole) & then set that into something sturdy also.
Plants that are falling over, I usually put into hanging pots or baskets & hang them up somewhere.Or you can add a small trellis. Just a matter of choice.

the first hoya I bought was a full size pubicalyx in a hanging unglazed terracotta pot with no drainage hole. I had to be very careful with watering, and the reason why the plant is still alive and happy in that pot is because unglazed clay is pourous and dries quickly. Still, I wouldn't reccommend doing that, even with my type of pot, it is just too risky.

Why can't you just pot them up a size into a heavier, sturdier pot, with a trellis, or like Marcy says, in a hanging pot? I have my hoyas in all sorts of pots, some hanging, some with trellises, some not- it keeps things interesting!

I agree with the others. Could you put your plant into something slightly smaller that fits inside the mug, like Marcy suggsted? I've even used those disposable plastic drinking glasses you can get at the grocery store. Just make sure it's easy to take out for watering.

Otherwise, certain hand-held rotary tools (ask at your hardware store if you don't know what I mean) will drill a hole through most ceramics, but you do have to be very careful and willing to risk breaking the item. I think mugs can make really cute little planters, and the nice thing about hoyas specifically is that they can withstand a small rootball for so long. The smaller hoyas look positively charming in little tea cups and creamers (etc.)! Good luck! 'Mare

Just get a drill bit for glass - it takes a lot of patience and elbow grease to get through a ceramic, glass or porcelain cup, but it's worth the trouble. I like to grow many plants in interesting or pretty "pots" that started life as something else. Chinese teapots and the little cups, old china bowls I pick up at garage sales, soup cups, old-fashioned tin mugs... It's fun to get creative!

I put about an inch of aquarium gravel in the bottom of the cups and placed the old hoya pots into them. The plants are now stable. My only concern is that one of the pots completely covers the opening of the cup. I'll water it carefully since the water that drains into the gravel of that cup will not evaporate as easily as the water in the bottom of the other cup.

i have a Hoya Carnosa in a smallish pot that comes to a rounded point and sits inside a round holder. It looks like a beehive.

I don't water it until the dirt looks really dusty and dry on top.

There is no drain hole, but it seems to be doing fine. It sits outside on a very bright n-facing deck.
