Need help ID Hoyas

Hi,

I just bought 3 Hoya plants without proper ID. Can anyone tell me what kind of hoyas are they?

Sorry for the low quality, i used my old camera phone. Once i get hold of my real camera i'll repost the pics if needed.

The first one might be Retusa. The second looks like Pubicalyx. I have no idea about the third.

Retusa for the first was my thought, too, though I had no idea the leaves got that long! I've got a small cutting of it that hasn't done much for me yet and all the leaves are less than 2" long...

Pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' for the second. One of my all-time favorites, though mine is a stingy bloomer...

I'll be watching for an ID on the third. I like the dark edges...

I hope you're right, Mare! When I was trying to figure it out the other day, I was hoping to have both publicalyx and lacunasa, because I know the vine has to be a carnosa....so I was hoping for a selection of blooms. And both of those particular hoyas are gorgeous. Ok, so I guess this will be my "experiment." I've just decided to keep all of the leaves for at least 3 years and if nothing happens by then I decide there's no hope. I figure by then the roots will have more than filled up each one of the cups and that there will be only one way to go, and that's up...so if they don't sprout by then I'll give up. I'll keep posting updates to that webshots page for anyone who's interested... Hopefully I'll be able to keep track of what's going on with the roots through the cups...they're slightly opaque. We'll see who was right, start hedging your bets! Maria

Hey Liz I'm so glad their fragrance returned! The lacunosa plants I have are only noticeably fragrant starting around dusk (unless you stick your nose right up to the flower). Most Hoyas are this way, because their primary pollinators are moths. Of course some Hoyas' scents are so strong that even during the day when they're weaker, it's quite noticeable. It honestly is a bit frustrating that they don't make more of an effort to put in place a system for watering their living merchandise correctly. I know big box stores usually have no-questions-asked plant replacement policies, but when I take home a plant that is struggling, I always want to save it, not tell it, "sorry sucker, you're going back to the torture camp."

The plant in the first bloom looking like it could be Hoya chlorantha or filiformis. The large leafed plant could be a form of Hoya macrophylla, clandestina or perhaps Hoya latifolia but the veining on the leaf is not right for latifolia although there is still confusion about these species so it's hard to really tell. You could call your plant Hoya sp aff. macrophylla for now. The next large leafed plant looks like Hoya juannguoiana to me. The next one may be Hoya vitiensis. The next is from the Hoya finlaysoni complex which is pretty large with new species being found. I would not consider your plant a hybrid. Most of the hybrids are from Michael Miyashiro a Hawaiian growers collection and they are not as common in the trade in other parts of the world so I doubt they are common in collections in Hong Kong or Asia in general. I am not sure what the last Hoya is but it has very beautiful leaves that are quite unique so it should be easy to identify for someone who is familiar with the species. Mike

I have a crappy little KQ that had several new vines of plain white leaves, but no green new growth. Some people suggest removing them to help the plant put it's energy into growing (as the white ones don't produce chlorophyll so don't really do anything but look pretty) I liked the white leaves so I left them on. I realised a few months back that the plant hadn't grown for ages and generally looked poor. I checked it's roots (all good) so, feeling like a murderer, I removed almost all the white leaves (I left one, I couldn't help it :D) Wouldn't you know, it has suddenly started growing again from all the points I chopped off, and all strong normal KQ leaves. So, in my totally just made up scientific theory, if the plant is big and healthy, a few white leaves are fine. If the plant is small and struggling, remove them and cross your fingers... lol.

I think first one... HOYA SPARTIODES.
Second one... carnosa or pubycalix.
Third one might be vietllina.

I agree with Jan on the first one being Hoya spartiodes. When I saw the pic my mouth flew open in awe! This particular Hoya has no leaves,,,the green you see is it's peduncles and a single flower forms on each of the tips. The flowers are a medium golden color.
You have a Hoya many of us old timers have on our wish list!! It's a hard Hoya to find for sale anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. I guess they are spartioides, pubicalyx and vitellina. I saw just one more of the spartiodes where i bought the plant, so probably i just go back and purchase it.

I know a lot of people that would give up their first born to get a start of H. spartioides. (:o)

Where in indo do you live? I was in bali and bandung this may and sort of looked for hoyas but did not see any.

I live in Jakarta, it's hard to find hoya here also, but we have flora shows from time to time and that's the only times i start looking. But still not many shop sell hoyas, and almost always not properly marked except for their local names.
