Money to buy daylilies -- lots of it

Gift Certificates from Maryott's, Marietta Gardens, Blue Ridge Daylilies, Aren't I Pretty Daylilies or Sunset Meadow

Also it would be terrific if you could provide me with a daylily nursery that

1) would promptly acknowledge receipt of my order by e-mail,

2) will ship them to me within a few days,

3) ship big healthy fans,

4) will not assume I am trying to cheat them when I tell them several daylilies are missing from the shipment, and

5) will not assume I am lying when I complain that 20 out of their 25 daylilies have died.

It would also be nice if I had my choice of carrier in the hot summer, when brown trucks get very warm after being in the sun for 4-5 hours before arriving at my country home.

Sounds good to me.
Have you had a lot of problems with sellers who
have not shipped your entire order?
Did the daylilies that died come from the same seller?
Sounds like you have had some bad luck.
The only problem I have had is tiny pencil sized fans.

Well, let me set up the story. The SDCSS had its annual Holiday Party this month. You head to Balboa Park and enter the Prado full of happy expectations. Upon entering the room, you are plied with spirits from our very own wine steward and his lovely assistant. You drop your gift exchange plant off at the table. You rush over and peruse the gift plants, hoping Santa will call your name first. After that, there's just enough time to hit the dessert table once more before the auction. Lots of nice stuff on the auction block, including a couple of packets of Digitostigma seeds donated by a mysterious philanthropist. Oh, the look on the kiddies faces after they had reeled in the loot, just heartwarming... Well, there it is. Hi Sue, my 4 seedling plumies are a bit droopy at present, think they are resenting our low temps here, some of the leaves have browned and dropped, think more will follow. Daren't water much as know cold and wet is a big NO-NO. Celadine is almost leafless following a spider mite prob earlier, jusy has a few immature leaves at the top so am sure it will come through winter OK as now keeping it really dry. The bigger UK garden centres do have a reasonable, and I use that term very loosely, selection of semi-tropicals, but they have the ability to keep them at stable temps year round...it would cost me a fortune to heat the house/room or whatever all winter to that temp with our prices!! So I keep the g/h at just above 40, just enough to keep it frost free with an electric fan heater on a thermostat. Yes, we had a lovely break thanks. Not been to mainland Spain before, but done Ibiza, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Were surrounded by lovely palms, citrus, hibiscus, cycads and all manner of exotic flora, I was green with envy! Saw hardly any packets of seeds apart from cucumbers/tomatoes/nasturtiums and a few palms that I knew were no goers here. (but we were only in the touristy places you see). This thread (and Mtn's other gift thread) have given me a lot of great ideas for gift giving. I finally made a bookmark so that I can keep a list of these wonderful suggestions. I really like the recommendations about jewelry from small designers. I can mention another jewelry designer - Dana Reed Designs. I have several family members with Jan, and March birthdays so this list will be so helpful. Mtn - funny you mentioned coffee table books - I don't have any coffee tables, just end tables. I think it's a holdover from when my father lived with us and had trouble navigating through a room. DH gave me a luxury SUV last December and I was crushed that it didn't have a huge bow on it. Sue - I sympathize with your DH and DD. At least they're getting their MRIs now and then you'll know how to proceed. DD had hers last week and is scheduled to see the neurosurgeon this week - she has severe degenerative discs (just like me) and we're hoping injections will alleviate the pain. It's tough to see your loved ones in pain. It does make me wonder about the effect all those years of competitive sports have had on their bodies. Can't wait to hear about the great unveiling of your big box. Funkyart - good to hear you like the Garnet Hill cashmere wraps. They went on sale last week and I ordered one for my DDIL. I debated so long trying to pick a color that several had sold out before I clicked 'put in cart'. My daughter told me to get the gray color block but I wasn't sure about the design and ended up with the solid gray heather. The eggplant was personally calling to me but alas, it was sold out. Patty_cakes - congrats on your new car. I got a new one last year and it's as bad as getting a new cell phone - there's so many hi tech features to learn and I can only absorb so much in one sitting. As for the Chanel bag- have you looked at the online vintage sites? When DD was in college in NYC we went to the Manhattan Vintage Sale and I found a classic one for a very reasonable price since the chain needed a minor repair. I dropped it off at the Chanel Store to have the leather reglazed and they fixed the loose link. DH and I are contemplating a trip in late winter/early spring as our gift - maybe London or Scotland - he isn't a great traveler so I'm taking my time figuring out the little details. There are several recent threads here on trips that I need to read again.

Yes, unfortunately one vendor shortchanged me two daylilies and never replaced them. Needless to say, I have crossed her off my list. Another one would not replace the dead daylilies, but offered to refund my money, only if I dug up the remaining living ones and sent them back to him. And yes, he also sent me a daylily that looked like a green onion. He did replace that $40 daylily, before I later begin losing most of the others he sent me, one by one, to crown rot.

On the whole, I had really good experiences with most of the mail order daylily nurseries.

Nancy, Sounds like a typical wish list to me. I have only had one problem with a vendor and she was from the LA. She sent an onion size also..She won't get business from me again. I have had wonderful luck with the mail order except a couple of years ago, I got an order where all but 3 out of 18 had crown rot on arrival..Yecch!!!

Dear Santa,

I have no idea if I've been good or not this year. My hubbie says not but everybody else says I'm real nice so I should believe them, right?

Anyway, what I'd really like is that nice JD 4010 that's sitting on the lot in Shelbyville. I know we offered them less than what they wanted but that's how it's done isn't it? It sure would look good in my barn. I could go down to TSC and get one of those nice tillers to go on the back and maybe even a front end loader for it. It sure would make lining out a heck of a lot easier. I could put a bunch of manure on the ground and till it in real good.

Please, Santa, PLEEAASSE????

Gosh, Janet, you just reminded me that I should have added a truckload of manure to my wish list! LOL That would really freak out my family -- they are already perplexed enough that I told them all I wanted was money for Christmas.

I forgot to include this "wish" for the perfect daylily nursery!

It would be ever so much appreciated if the websites were kept up-to-date as to availability. It is ever so frustrating to spend hours and hours shopping for plants, making out lists, and sending in orders with checks, only to then discover they are out of this and that. Since I build websites, I know it isn't all that difficult to show when an item is no longer available.
