captain`s adventure...

i just picked up one of these new arrivals for 15 bux- a very interesting (and scarce in these areas)hosta.

it is a sport of captain kirk and that one always performs well for me.

anyone else excited about this one?

Soon as I saw a picture of it in a local mailorder catalogue I ordered a couple of them, at a very similar price. They should be here on Tuesday, cannot wait for it to go through its various phases this year!

Interesting hosta. Since I think my Tattoo may have kicked the bucket, I might have to get this one to replace it.

Mudhouse, you hit the nail on the head with this statement: "Sometimes, in my experience, city codes guys cite requirements without completely reviewing the specifics of a situation when you call for info." After finishing construction of an additional stand alone greenhouse that was around 25,000 sqr ft we had all the inspectors come out and give us the ok on all the work (keep in mind this is out in the country). Then we had to have the fire department come out and sign off on it. Jr. Captain Patty S. (or something along those lines) was the charmer who came out and was responsible for this. She had quite a chip on her shoulder, as after meeting her I said "Patty if you will follow me" and she responded, "it's Jr. Captain Patty...". HAHA Sorry Boss... So we showed her around, all the exits, isle widths, etc etc, and she asked for the square footage etc. Then she asks us how much water storage do we have that fire fighters could hook up to in case of a fire. We have 80,000 gallons worth in storage tanks up the hill. She says we need more storage and according to the square footage of all the greenhouses we should have something like 250,000 gal of water that firefighters could use to fight a blaze. I couldn't help but laugh outloud, and said you need a quarter of a million gallons? We will see what we can do... She had some other snyde remarks as she headed back to her truck, so I thanked Patty... she said jr capt patty... I countered "if we are being formal its Dr. Garner to you" and she left. Talked to an actual captain a few days later, he apologized for her snippy attitude and said she was recently promoted and she apparently didn't know the difference between a greenhouse and an actual house and was demanding things according to codes for homes that didn't apply here. Moral of the story don't always trust the first city employee you talk to, and try to talk to inspectors when they are in good moods :)

Our next port of call is Lahaina on the island of Maui. Arrival was at 8:00 and we were due to sail away at 6:00. Lahaina does not have a pier for cruise ships, the ships tenders are used to shuttle passengers back and forth. There were many people on our ship who used walkers and those folks managed to get ashore without too much of a problem. However, those in battery operated scooters just would not be able to make it. Rather than just turn loose all those who want to go ashore, there are tickets given out shortly after dropping anchor. The numbers on those tickets will determine when you go ashore. They also are working with passengers who have paid the ship for an official excursion (tour) and those get priority. Once again we rented a car. I headed for the small town of Makawao using as many side roads as possible. We went to Maui Hands, where we, once again, spent money. We ventured into a couple of other stores that offered art from local folks. Then, again, using side roads, we headed to the famed Hana Highway. We did not go to Hana, but aimed back toward the small town of Paia, where we went to the Maui Crafts Guild store. More local art. Lunch was at Thai Spice there in town. However, if you ever get to Paia, you must consider the Paia Fish Market restaurant! Communal dining with fresh, fresh fish! We took our time driving back to Lahaina to return the car. Free shuttle back to the ship was convenient. If you are ever on Maui, consider going to their aquarium, the Maui Ocean Center. A great place with two restaurants. Also on Maui is the shield volcano, Haleakala, a long drive away, but wonderful views and some good hiking to the top. That is a US National Park and some folks like to get there for sunrise (reservations recommended for that). There are some great stores in Lahaina, so if shopping is your thing, spend your money there. Back on the ship, Adagio performed in the Explorers Lounge (always called Adagio with different violist/pianist). The Ocean Quarter had the evening off, but Johnny held forth in the piano bar. The Lion King was shown a couple of times in the theater. In the Mainstage, Hyperion Knight (billed as a virtuoso pianist) had shows at 7:30 and 9:30. Since there was no live music in the Ocean Bar, at 8:30 and fun time was with Majority Rules Game, what a blast that one is. There were promotions throughout the ship for Rudi’s Sel de Mer dinner. Very French, with a menu of mostly fresh fish, inspired by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin. This is in the Pinnacle Grill and there is a $49 charge for this special event. Reservations required.

Since refrigeration space is an issue, I'd look at ordering irradiated milk. One thing we used to take camping, was those specialty dry Italian sausages. They are great for mini-charcuterie boards for snack times/lunches, but can also be thrown into omelettes, pizzas, etc. Also, our favourite specialty cheeses come completely wrapped in a wax outer cover and keep forever. Do take things like garlic, shallots, ginger that don't need refrigeration, but are essential if fish is caught. However, don't count on fish being caught. I'm addicted to sailing vlogs and it seems that sometimes there are not as many fish waiting to take a hook as you might think. Very jealous. As I said, I'm addicted to sailing vlogs and I'm trying to convince the rest of my family to come on a charter with me in Panama next winter. So far they are unconvinced, but I've got a whole year to work on them.

Hallelujah! Got mine yesterday! They're both single shoot plants with the shoots almost 2 inches long, good looking root systems. I have no doubt they'll be oft-photographed plants this year, to document the changes in colour they'll go through. I'll keep this thread active over the course of the season to keep y'all in the loop. Being a member of the 'Fortunei' family I'm expecting fairly vigorous growth out of it.

I get my 'Captain's Adventure' in the mail tomorrow (hopefully), along with the heuchera/ella I ordered. I dug up my 'Tattoo', the crown was hollow and had very few roots, so I pitched it. Too bad, it came from a good growing plant. It must have rotted during the winter under the four feet of snow. Ah well, 'Captain's Adventure' is going in that spot now between heuchera 'Caramel' and 'Stiletto'.

my hosta encyclopedia has a section called, `hostas for conneiseurs`` - tattoo is listed in there; it is difficult from what i hear. great expectations was in that chapter as well and so it should be- mine is a joke lol

If I ever get a new 'Tattoo', I'll most likely keep it in a pot so I can control how much moisture it gets in the winter to keep it from rotting like the one I had. And if I fail with that, well, no more 'Tattoo'.

Bringing this one back.
All the folks who got Captain Adventure, what does it look like most recently? My pics are still in the camera.

I was so impressed with Pieter's photo that I ordered one which just got potted one day this week.

Keep seeing both 'Captain Adventure' used (in Hostalibrary) and 'Captain's Adventure.' Which is official?

Mine is just peeking out of the ground right now, a little slower to wake than many of my other hostas. I do believe the correct spelling is Captain's Adventure. Here are a couple of pictures of mine in late June of last year (ignore the chewed up leaves):

These are mine from last year, taken early July '11.

The one in the raised box -below- hasn't shown a nose as yet, but that's not unexpected. I won't get worried about it for another week or so...

This one in the pot is coming up now and is showing 3 shoots unfurling, haven't shot any pix of it as yet this year, but will soon, like this weekend...

Mine seems to have a much wider edge than yours and is less crinkly. I wonder why that is? I wonder if mine will look the same as it did last year? Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

Karen, this is mine this spring. I'm disappointed....with how it looks, cannot fault its vigour, it went from a single shoot to 4 this year. Sure hope it improves its looks this year.
