A leaf to Show & Tell --- gorgeous!

'Dick Ward'

'The Razor's Edge' looking sharp:

Hosta plantaginea, the older plant much darker of leaf:

'Celtic Uplands'

This one wintered in a tiny pot with just a wee bit of soil:

'Faith' is similar to a few other gold hosta, but it shows its leaves in a different pattern.

'Beet Salad' was not planted until early March, and it fell into two separate halves. Not too experienced with how hosta multiply (or divide either), so I'd put it into two pots. However, to keep the "hosta count" down for my DH's information, I restored both halves to this one container.

Looking good with those beet red petioles.

Not the best leaf picture for 'Sharp Dressed Man' but it is going to be a pretty plant.

This is one of two 'Victory' I got from Hostahosta/Solberg last August. It spent the winter in a small trough with the rest of the order. Don't think it cramped its style a bit:

It's dark now, but if I remember tomorrow I'll take some pictures. Earlier I was admiring how beautiful Lakeside Dragonfly looked, although it is only two eyes. I think this one will remain in a pot, but a nicer one than the plain plastic terra cotta colored one it's in now.

Rina, your Orgyalis is so pretty..Vivid orange. Your Kalanchoe must have been in full/direct sun. Mine has orange foliage but not as orange as yours. Okay, went outside..The perennial, whatever it may be has no fragrance..Leaf texture is rough, protrudes. Thankfully, no problems touching Kalanchoes. If so, I'd be in trouble. Have quite a few 'indoor' Kalanchoes. I also rubbed my finger and thumb over the Sage..It's VERY fragrant. Was going to mention, but didn't think it important at the time..probably isn't now either.lol. Actually, I bought two perennials at HD w/tags reading Euphorbia. The second had different colors. Unfortunately, it didn't make it through winter. Your E. Helena's Bush is gorgeous! Is it hardy? Your Sage looks similar to mine, only a LOT larger.. Height and leaf size. Is it planted in medium or full sun? It's supposed to grow tall, but for some reason, doesn't. This is the first year it's reached 8"..lol. Supposed to be 2-4' or taller. Terry, my sister was here visiting from Maine and decided that I needed an orchid to add to my garden. So when she got home she called a nursery here in town (Delray Beach) that she found on the internet. It seems as though he was a wholesaler and didn't do retail but was very enthused about this particular orchid and agreed to get one to me. I had the thrill of going to his wholesale nursery with tons of orchids and no customers, he spent lots of time with me. It was heaven. I went back later to find him and the nursery was gone. I know this orchid is available on orchids.com. It does take a while to get to this size. Mine is probably 5-6 years old now. Regarding the tree mounting. You just tie it on with something that won't harm the plant like panty hose or jute. The roots attach and it stays on it's own. I cover it if the temps dip. I have also taken it down for hurricanes and it didn't hurt it at all. I just needed to reattach it. The nurseryman recommended attaching it to a queen palm. Whatever it's attached to, this one needs quite a bit of light, so the tree can't have a large canopy. Nancy

Yes, Jen, that was me :) you mailed the seeds to! And I'm so glad you did. This is my first experience growing plumerias, and I think their foliage is just beautiful! I'm not sure how I will ever see flowers in Minnesota (although who knows?), but just the beautiful look of these plants is wonderful. I'm even tempted to try to grow new varieties from seed, perhaps a dwarf kind or maybe one of the easy-bloomers. k2fl, my seedling's leaves look very similar to yours, that makes me feel much better! In fact, other than this leaf (which has since fallen off), the other leaves are very healthy. I suppose I need to familiarize myself more with the growing habit of plumerias. Do leaves fall off as it grows bigger, in every season? Thank you arctictropical for the input. Where are you located in Zone 4? Have you managed to bring plumies into bloom in Zone 4? thanks so much everyone!

March,2011 will soon be history. It was a windy,snowy unsettled month in this area...quilting weather. However, I got very little sewing done. I did finish the Pineapple Blossom but most of it had been done earlier. I used 2 panels for baby quilts and have them sandwiched but that's it for them. I cut up another panel and made blocks and added sashings for a baby quilt and sandwiched the top, but no quilting done yet. I have enjoyed the posts here and looking at all the wonderful quilts. If there is a project you are doing in March,please post about it. It doesn't have to be finished and pics aren't necessary. I hope April is 'sewing-productive' for all of us. I may be at the garden a lot....can't wait for the snow to disappear. I also need to stock up on whites/neutrals/blenders, and when I go to quilt shops, I will be on the lookout for those. Have a 'quilty' day. ~Geraldine

Cindy, your June is a looker! Not familiar with its size and growth characteristics, but it reminds me of a brighter leaf in the middle, yet shaped like Moonstruck. None of these am I familiar with mature plant specimen.

I will have a couple more Lakesides when everything is delivered, but Lakeside DragonFly is not one of them. Please share with us what is catching your eye this spring.

Thanks, Mom. I was thinking the same about your set of plants too. Love the June and then that Undulata, whoaaaa, it looks like it is about to blast off!

Gesila, just when I thought it was safe to look at more hosta, you have to post PARADISE ISLAND. Oh my, never saw a hosta with a TAN BACK, colored legs, and green skinny margins. I think it is fantastic. Lkside Prophecy Fulfilled looks to have a lot of substance, something I'm coming to appreciate a lot. Flemish Skies is lovely, but I'm not going for many blues due to them waffling in our climate.

I ordered a few hosta tonight, as a gift for my daughter in law. I got Sagae, Rhino Hide, Steffi (her daughter), On Stage, Hollywood Lights, All That Jazz, and salvia 'Caradonna' (darling Donna). I put Rhino Hide in the order so I could see how it looks--the rest have a "theme" if you note. They live in NH where hosta are expected to grow! When she sends "baby pictures," I'll be pleased to show off my "grandkids" on the forum.

Babka, perfect leaves, every one in place, such a shine! Has yours come back out this year? It looks very sophisticated --but then you keep your hosta so pristine, how could it look otherwise.

Babka, I really like the way Rainbow's End grows in a pot. I might have to consider potting mine up.

Moccasin, nice list of plants for your DIL! I like your theme! My picture of LS Prophecy Fulfilled was taken shortly after it had been in a shipping box for 4 days. So, I'm thinking it is pretty hardy and has good substance!

Moccasin- Yes, my Rainbow's End is up, still opening up, and looking good this year. I've had it since early in 2009. Here it is this morning.

Oh dear! What a beautiful leaf AND plant! I'd have to say it makes the "10-foot list" because it is so identifiable.

Every day, I'm able to identify more plants by sight. I find it helpful to keep the golds all together, the greens all together, ---haven't figured out a technique for the different margin colors though. Pairing Dick Ward with Brother Stefan, its reverse in coloration, might work, for example.

Arranging the dwarfs, minis, and smalls into their own space to call attention to them, maybe--I have a wrought iron 8' tall display tower that could look effective for them.
