Word Of Advice from my Doctor about Sunsreens
Comments (20)I spent 9 years in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Florida and Texas. I just had a lesion removed from my scalp (fortunately benign!) that the surgeon told me was directly attributed to overexposure to the sun. I have a lot of capillaries (spideweb) on my cheeks caused by overexposure to the sun. I was in the military and used hang out at the beach every chance I got. In fact, in Hawaii, I practically lived on the beach. I spent a lot of time outdoors in Texas and Arizona and as a kid in Kansas...well, anyone who lives in Kansas knows how hot and sunny it is here. We wore "suntan lotions" Maybe in the 60s and by the 70s and 80s I was using stuff that was supposed to enhance your tan and not protective at all. About 1984, I saw what the Florida sun was doing to the fiancé of my sister-in-law's brother. I quit hanging out in the sun, totally exposed like that. I made sure I was using good sunscreens and sometimes would wear a hat to keep the sun out of my face. I still hang out, outside, love to go to the lake, the seashore, I used run a lot, I work my farm but I always wear a cap with a brim. When I'm on the farm, I wear an Amish style hat with a wide brim (those guys know what they were doing...). I also wear sunglasses. Repeated overexposure to bright sun can lead to premature cataracts. You need Vitamin D from the sun. Being outdoors and enjoying the fresh air is good for you. Just be careful of overexposure and protect yourself, especially kids. Start protecting at a young age. Get a high SPf and wear sunglasses!...See MoreHow do I get rid of beetles eating my flowers?

Comments (13)Thanks folks, As an apmt dweller, I have no outdoors to give my plants so I can't do that. I have it hanging in the kitchen ('cause it's too big to go anywhere else) which come summer won't be too cool (I'm on the top floor, w/ no AC & all west windows, it gets HOT). It's well away from the windows, so it'll be somewhat shady. I can't decide whether I should swap out the EA mix for my own; it would be an enormous job (I like that paper funnel technique Denise, smart)! Am thinking of just take cuttings, or unpot a few stems from the middle & pot them up separately as insurance just in case. Am I understanding it likes be on the moister side or not? Even the watering will be difficult, it's so big I think I'll have to soak it in the sink for a while, since I've removed the saucer & don't wish for water all over the floor. Am hoping when I get my E's VF-11, that watering w/ that will help & therefore ease my anxiety abt the EA mix. Have run into multiple problems getting the E's VF-11, Ace Hardware says it's restricted & not permitted to ship into NY state, that wasted 2 wks. Have just re-ordered it from Charley's Greenhouse (they advised AFTER I ordered a gallon that it's backordered, but I've convinced them to send me comparable amounts of quarts for the same price). Am hoping MAYBE I'll actually get it this wknd ... sigh....See MoreHow to prevent rabbits from eating my low hanging fruits?
Comments (18)"They just take a single bite or a few bites out of one fruit. The only other thing ever got eaten was bush green beans last year." Talk about Deja-Vu, I am having the same _exact_ issue. I've never had issues in years gone by, but I this year I expanded my garden to grow more variety. I am growing bush green beans, cucumbers, beets, watermelons, asparagus, and a couple of other things. Whatever it was was eating the leaves off of my cucumbers, my bush green beans (leaves and beans), and eating tomatoes (leafs and larger unripe fruit), the last straw was when they ate a larger unripe tomato (probably about 2 weeks from ripe), two of my young asparagus plants, and a baby watermelon. I went out one night and put up rabbit fence around my whole garden, not knowing what it was, as I was heading out there to put the fence up - I was face to face with the culprit, a huge groundhog. He stood there and stared at me and didn't even bother to move until I ran towards him with the fence posts, lol. So here's my vote towards it being a groundhog. I have tons of rabbits in my yard, but they seem much more content eating the bountiful amounts of clover in my backyard and I rarely see them near my garden. I had suspected them until I saw a tomato taken that was about a foot off the ground and saw that it was carefully "plucked" from the plant, no way a rabbit could've done that....See Morethisismelissa
