Silly Plant... doesn't it know it's winter?!?!

Although we have had a killing frost in the valley below me in October, it hasn't made it up into my heavily wooded hill... YET...

They are predicting (or at least were yesterday) a winter storm with lows in the high teens (which is unusual even in the dead of winter) for us tonight through the weekend.

I was glancing at the garden this morning planning my day, and what did I see but a new rebloom scape on Adamas! I had never really had rebloom in my garden before this year, so any rebloom scapes are a treat for me. This three year old plant was a real surprise though, as it had already rebloomed for me in early October when the blooms still had a prayer of opening. I am hoping that this is a sign of things to come as some of my newer DL's get a few years under their belts.

Anyway, had to share it as it was a fun surprise to see this one last DL holding out for warmer weather!

Hope everyone stays warm through all of the bad weather they say is coming at us throughout the states!

Julie, what a nice surprise you had. I'm not familiar with Adamas but any daylily blooming now is a sure treat. Hopefully your other daylilys will start to give you more rebloom in 2009. I had one daylily rebloom for me this year. I don't have many newer daylilys so it was a nice treat to see rebloom.

You don't hear ADAMAS mentioned a lot, but it has been a wonderful plant for me. I got it as a bonus from Maryotts three or four years ago, and I have just loved it!

First pic is August 7, which is mid to late season for me. It had been blooming for about three weeks at that time and was almost done.

This was rebloom on Septerber 2. Basically instant rebloom, and I was very excited about it!

As everyone has said, practices for winter protection or the lack thereof differ widely among gardeners. My personal rule of thumb is that I pull off the protection in spring when conditions approximate those in which I put on the protection, and I make sure to put on the protection LATE in the season. In most places, including the east coast I think, the moisture in the spring is as big a danger as anything in the winter you're protecting against. My temperature range for putting on protection is when the HIGHs for the day don't get above 20, so the same applies in taking it off. As long as your highs most days stay above 20, I'd go ahead and take it off. Even though you can get a late frost that would nip early leaves, by the time the leaves are out you shouldn't have any protection on anyway, so it's best to let the rose warm up at a natural pace along with the rest of the soil. Of course things may differ in your zone, but I think many of us think roses can't handle the cold as well as they often can. Even my hybrid teas and teas are fine as long as the highs are above 20 and the lows not into the single digits. Cynthia

Give it some shade, keep the soil moist but not wet. Light mulch several inches from the stems. Peonies are the same as any perennial--when they're transplanted during summer they will wilt, need time to get their feeder roots established.

Yep. thanks Cactus. I looked up Orinithogalum multifolia and found it at Pacific Bulb Society, a lovely yellow flowered plant. My juncusafolium has a white flower like most of the genus. Now I want to know who invented the genus for these plants.

where are you .. big city name ... you planted it the first week of july??? .. how.. how do you water ... if it was bugs.. and you treated with bug killer.. what more is there to do .. the goo isnt going to restore the leaves ... but as long as they are green .. they are doing their job.. we do need a pic or two .. ken

Wow, such late rebloom is astonishing. Everything is long frozen here. Of couse freezes don't last, we get really cold and then eventually it warms up again. Just had about three inches of rain between yesterday and all night. If it had been snow instead, we would have had a record. Good thing it was warm.

ADAMAS is not one that I remember hearing anything about either. And its a very pretty one.

Well, I had to cut the poor little trooper and bring it inside tonight. We haven't gotten the cold yet (the weatherman here fibs a lot), but it is supposed to hit tomorrow. Cut my final boquet of Pineapple Sage and figured I would add my DL stalk as even if it doesn't open, it wouldn't survive the weekend anyway.

I am surprised that ADAMAS isn't more popular than it is. I was thrilled when I got it as a bonus as it was still in the $75 range that year. It is listed as 6", 6 way branching, 35 bud count. It hasn't been that astonishing in numbers in my cooler climate, but has been one heck of a bloomer. It's December scape had 3 way branching, with one chewed off by slugs, but still had 9 buds that I could see on the remaining two. This is what I expected from AWESOME BLOSSOM (it's parent) and so far have been disapointed.
