I have never, ever seen his product (I'm in Montreal). It does sound interesting... except that it would never, ever disappear/decompose. I'm not sure I'd want that in my garden.

It will disappear if you get a down pour of rain and the property has a slight tilt to it. The rubber floats :>)

Beware of fires around rubber mulch, which I understand has petroleum in it. You might want to research this.

I looked at it, it sounds good, but I am afraid it will get too hot, it would almost be like planting in asphalt.

What would you do when you get ready to divide your daylilies? You'd be getting the rubber mulch mixed up with the soil. I don't think it's a good idea.

I don't mulch close to the plants anyways...I just find the regular mulch can harbor insects and weeds....I would try it-rubber crumb-[when available], on a small garden first, especially on the next to the lawn edge to see how it would do....anything to help the back....or maybe I'll just have to use heavier wood mulch..I tend to use as little mulch as I can get away with but maybe I need to put it on thicker...cheers, lloyd

I tend to put it down kind of thin too, at one time I has my son convinced that someone was stealing it because it decomposes and disappears. But funnier yet, my idiot (I am being kind) brother in law had rented a house to my brother after they had a fire, when my brothers home was repaired and they moved out my brother in law sent him a bill for the 6 bags of mulch that he either took or threw away. We still laugh at him about that one.

Do you otherwise amend your soil? Good mulch does much more than protect your plants and act as a weed barrier (of sorts).

The rubber mulch was thought to be a good surface for playgrounds. However, as noted, it does ignite (dropped cigarettes being a hazard) and also, since some of it (most of it...all of it?) comes from recycled tires, there was some concern with metal shards being found in it....

It also comes in various shades...don't know it if fades or not.

Each daylily is set in a hole filled with well composted cow manure and topsoil mix. This helps it root well[lots of white feeders]......this soil grows great root systems as it was probably the first time this soil had anything "planted" in it. This would have been hay or meadow turned into lawn....The only fertilizer I use is Seaboost[except this year too wet.] The mulch works in rather quickly....cheers, lloyd

Have you put down 8 layers of newspaper first, before adding the mulch? It really helps, but yes, it all does decompose in time. Raised beds are much easier to keep weed-free.

Hi, Nancy. Yes I'm a big believer in mewspaper under mulch. It saves a lot of stress of weeding.....LOL..About five years ago I really hurt my back and for a whole summer all I could do was gingerly walk around the gardens.....no gardening.....I had to do something that fall as I had DL's ordered. so I did a quick and dirty garden that fall....dug the holes in the lawn where I wanted garden..placed layers of newspapers around each hole. planted in the holes and mulched on the newspapers.....and it worked big time...but there is a wandering weed that travels through all the beds...constant battle,,,cheers, lloyd

No my brother in law is about as dumb as a box of rocks. I won't go into the story but he is currently serving 10 months for trying to get a date with a young lady over the internet. I hope that soon he will no longer be my brother in law.

I was interested in rubber mulch at one time. However, others pointed out that debris (leaves and so on) will accumulate on top of it, and someone said that it has an unpleasant smell in the heat. I decided not to use it. The advertising pictures are very appealling, but they don't tell the whole story.

Lowes sells it here. It's made from recycled tires and such. It's great for playgrounds, not so much for flowerbeds. And yes, it does float.
