Although I do have to admit that time lapse plant photography always creeps me out a bit. Seeing plants move at that speed makes me feel suddenly... surrounded and outnumbered.

Very cool, Leon! How long in real time did it take for them to actually open? My carnosa just recently bloomed and I was able to narrow it down to a 2 hour window, but am curious as to how long it actually took them to pop open. Your blooms are beautiful!

lol I would have figured for sure you'd understand that reference, being an orchid head yourself, Quinn.

No one missed anything. I'm being a weirdo. A while back, I got into a conversation with Mike where he clued me into the fact that there is a whole genus of orchids that slap bees on the top of the head with their pollen. If you listen closely, they are heard to say, "Surprise! My stuff's on you!" I believe these orchids are a distant relation to creepy guys hanging out in the park wearing trenchcoats...

Ah, I see. I don't grow those, so I don't know much at all about them. Ew to creepy guys hanging out in the park wearing trenchcoats. I grow orchids that are related to the one made famous when Darwin predicted the pollinator based on observing the flower. No sneezing here :)

Eeek! I just watched the video, and that IS pretty creepy. I have to say, I enjoyed watching KQ blooms opening much, much more.

Cool video indeed. I have wanted to make a time lapse video for a long time but have always felt that the process would just be so tedious. Does your camera have a time lapse function or did you edit the video? You have inspired me to drag out my seriously underused video camera.

GG plant sex is pretty darn filthy when you look at it. I think some of the coolest orchids are the ones that trick male insects into mating with them. Some orchids even produce the exact sex pheromones needed to attract their pollinators. Some of the South American orchids from the same group as the Catasetums produce oils that male Euglossa bees collect and smear on themselves so that they can attract females, like sexy cologne. Hoyas are not quite as advanced as orchids but the lock and key type mechanism for Asclepiad pollination is pretty darn cool in itself.
Quinn you should try a Catasetum because I am sure you would love them. You can't get much easier than wet + fertilizer in the summer and completely dry and sunny in the winter. Anyways they are easier to keep happy than those often temperamental Angraecoids.

Mel, the first frame was at 10:49:37 AM and the last frame was 8:50:51 PM and if my math is correct that's about 1 minute over 10 hours, you can see that the sun sets and I turn on lights to finish.

Mike, I used a Canon GL2 camera and it does have a nice time lapse function and then it was edited with AVID's Studio 14 to speed up the video because it was still too slow. (I had no idea the film would inspire all this sex talk)

I will look at those orchid sites too, my hoyas have not liked the move from the Ozarks to south Texas but my Christmas Cactus have loved it so I don't think I'll be adding more hoya.

That's too bad your Hoyas are not liking Texas. There are a number of Arizona growers that have adapted by relying heavily on pebble trays and even buckets or tubs of water underneath their plants. Granted, I've never done more than driven through the southwest, so I have no idea how similar or different "Arizona" is to "Southern Texas."
