Exotic Angel 'Hoya nummularioides'

Home Depot in Cherry Hill New Jersey had 3 large Exotic Angel hanging baskets of Hoya nummularioides today, not sure if this is a new variety for them, if not, it is certainly the first time I've ever seen it. It is labeled Hoya carnosa "Green Leaf" but it is definately nummularioides, the common version, not the one with the red tinged leaves that starts blooming in August. They looked very healthy and robust!

I find nummularioides to be an easy hoya to grow, very forgiving of any abuse and quick to bounce back - my full size plant was in horrible, over-watered shape when I got it, and within a few months it was gorgeous. This is definately one of my favorite hoyas, love the leaves and the growth habit and it has the cutest, teeniest little flowers.....so sweet!

I didn't buy it - though I wanted to - because I didn't have enough money on me....besides, I already have two, one full plant and a small one growing from cuttings CB sent me last spring, so it isn't like I really NEEDED it...do I really "need" any of my hoyas??? Of course, if I had had the cash, I would right now be playing musical hoyas, shuffling all my plants around trying to make room....

Wow...I would have been so excited to find nummularioides in HD! That must've been a shocker to see. Thanks for the information...I'll definitely be on the lookout!

Yeah, I was very suprised! Almost disappointed that I already have one, if you can believe that! You are in the northeast as well, Gabi, maybe your area will have them too.

That was quite a mislabel. If they were that badly mislabeled...I doubt it was a Brassia species. I even doubt it was a cross strictly within the Brassia genus. So my bet would be that it's an intergeneric Oncidium family hybrid. They are ubiquitous. There are quite a few cooler growers in the Oncidium family so I wouldn't be surprised if you could grow a random intergeneric cross outside year around in the bay area. So if it's a real "deal"...and you don't mind a bit of a gamble...then go for it. It's always fun to gamble a bit and discover an excellent outdoor grower. But doing a bit of homework will definitely provide you with the most bang for your buck. Here in my relatively dry and warmer conditions...I've found that the Oncidium intergeneric crosses appreciate a bit of moss. Of course it also depends on your watering frequency. More frequency means less moss. They also seem to do best with slightly shadier conditions...but they'll require less shade the closer one is to the coast. Speaking of Brassias though...here's Brassia brachiata on a Jacaranda tree in Australia. I tend to think of Brassias as being more on the intermediate side...but I'm sure there are some species from higher elevations.

Jo, I have seen linearis in the box stores in the past few years, though usually by the time I came across them, they were looking pretty sad. I got my EA linearis from a local garden center that sold EA plants, I gave the girl there that did the ordering a list of a few plants I was interested in, and she passed them along to EA, no promises though! Lucky for me, they did send a linearis, and I knew what day they were to be shipped and was there to see them take it out of the box, so I was the only one to ever water it or care for it, which may be why the plant survived. FYI, alot of people water linearis from the bottom to avoid what seems to be a common issue with the variety, stem rot right above the soil level. Not the whole stem, but just a small section rots and then dries up and withers away, so that water and nutrients can no longer reach the rest of the stem...if you don't clip it off and remove the dead part, it will die. I have watched it happen to my plant, and am slowly transferring all the pieces that get the stem rot to hydroculture. I tried switching out of the EA mix to my faster draining mix, and that helped somewhat, but didn't solve the problem. I am not having any problems in hydro though, so I am assuming it has something to do with the soil, rot causing microbes or whatever. I have heard of this happening to a few other people with this plant, but i don't know how common it is - and I am a stingy waterer too, so I was surprised it happened to me. If anyone else has had the problem, I would love to know how they solved it. No matter what, it is not enough to make me want to stop growing this hoya, I really like it. Wish the dang thing would bloom though!!

Interestingly enough, this Hoya also does very well mounted on bark. I mention this since as mentioned above, they seem to like to dry out btwn waterings, yet liked being frequently moist on the bark. I've had a small plant for yrs. & a couple of yrs. ago I started some of it over a hunk of bark secured w/ sewing thread. It secured itself as well w/ some aerial roots, did very well. It's just that I neglected to consider I'd have to water it every day, either a dunk in the sink or some misting. The plant really liked it, I lost patience & eventually put it back in the pot. I've never seen this in bloom, never see it in NYC area either, only some greenhouses in PA (where I saw it mounted on bark). Is it fragrant? I'd love to get more, just never see it offered around here. Enjoy!

That plant on plantcareinfo is Hoya nummularioides, cara. There are several hoyas out there that go by invalid names, such as pubea, as I said earlier. I do believe (someone correct me if I am wrong) that Hoya pubea was the name used by Exotic Angels for Hoya nummularioides quite some time back. Exotic Angels is notorious for mislabeling and inventing new names for already named hoyas. Apparently, this has actually been discussed before on GW/hoya forum. I hear ya! I kind of feel the same way when I see a hoya that I love in a store but already have, and find myself wishing I needed one. I was thinking the same thing about the northeast. Even if I can't find one in NY, I'm in Jersey quite a bit (I have some friends that live in the Linden area...not sure how close that is to Cherry Hill, but I'll take a look at a closeby HD next time I'm there).

Linden is I believe North Jersey, but closer to Central Jersey. Cherry Hill is considered south Jersey, and right across the river from Philadelphia, I live east of there. I would check any Home Depot in your area too. I think the way it works with EA is that at certain times, certain varieties are ready for distribution and all go out at once. These had just arrived, one of them was still in a plastic sleeve.

There is a garden center near me that sells EA and a few times before the owner placed an order I requested a few different hoyas, and EA sent them - though it depends on what they have and what is ready. I got a linearis that way, and since I was the first person to ever take care of it, it was never abused by any garden center workers and is one of the few EA's that made it for me. I would love to get a longifolia, but you never see that one. I think EA calls it something like "Shamapry" I have a small pot of cuttings that someone sent me last year, but they are from old growth and are not doing much. Anyway, if you (or anyone else!) can find a garden center in your area that sells EA, you could see if they would order one for you. I heard last fall that EA was going to start selling retail from their website, but I don't know if it was true or if it has happened yet.
