My Guacamole came up as Fried Green Tomatos

(Hows that for a thread title?)

My Guacamole is so far all green. Does the it take a while for the dark edges to color up? Or do I have a reversion/sport on my hands.

It took mine a little while. I'm two zones ahead of you and mine is just now getting a green edge.

You can send the plant to a local University plant pathology lab if you want to know for sure what kind of virus this is. Whatever the name, it's a virus, and since plants do not have immune systems it needs to be gotten rid of, pot, soil mix and all. Some viruses do use dagger nematodes as vectors for the disease. Tomato ringspot has this as a vector. You can mitigate that by pouring boiling water over the area where the plant was stationed. You could also use Zerotol as a soil drench in that area. My goal is to have viable seeds to sow in the ground next year. So if there's baby fruit by the time this container plant has to be brought indoors, then the warmth inside may see it through to a mature seed tomato. I do have that plastic cover, but it still gets cold under there. There's no question that a tomato grown in the ground through a hot season has alot more flavor and sweetness. I've got a few of those and have been picking when the fruit is still just a tiny bit green and will finish ripening on the sunny windowsill. OMG they're good. Saving the one Mr. Stripey I've got so far, and am impatient for more of the Brandywine's (pink-red toms toward top of photo) to do their thing. Yes: I've turned into a real TomatHo and there's no going back.

Just venting I guess. I was quite upset about the greenhouse thing. I opened all the vents but it was still hot enough to bake the stems. Live and learn I guess. It's sort of weird that the healthiest looking plant I have doesn't have a root! I cut off the baked part and figured I'd plop it into some soil and it perked back up! Not sure if it will grow roots in time for transplant (2wks) but what the heck . . .

Thanks Ed, they were real good, to the point where I would use a green one again to sacrafice a ripe one. Dirtguy, I would say possibly a slight ripe to none. The tomatoes in the photo had the bottoms starting to turn red. I think the whole problem with too much ripeness is the moisture in when it is fried. I read the trick is to put salt on both sides and let them sit to help drain the moisture on a rack or paper towel. I also notice that sticking the tomatoe in lour mix then egg then back to flour helped because they were moist still. I am going to try one that is totaly unripe next and compare.

Well, I have Guacamole and Fried Green Tomatoes, and did not remember which should look what way. But I also have Holy Mole! and it is awfully big. And the leaf seems wider than it is long, and it has lighter/medium green for a slash down the middle, and then that dark green on the rest of the leaf. Not really MARGINAL, since the dark green is most of the leaf. But if you like Guacamole, have you tried Holy Mole? It has really heavy substance.

I did not order Avocado, it was a bonus plant, and so was Mango Salsa, so I think I've swept the entire Mexican dinner menu here. That Mango Salsa has red legs and yellow leaves, don't know the blossom color. Pretty plant.

I always appreciate the plantaginea progeny, which is why Guacamole, Fried Green Tomatoes, Fried Bananas were among my first hosta; hoping for a great fragrance. If all of my plantagineas bloom in August and Sept, I bet the fragrance will be noticeable all around the neighborhood.

My Guacamole really added eyes this year, I also have Hoosier Harmony, Fragrant Bouquet and Stained Glass in that row, I hope to be smelling pretty here as well ;)
