A nice spacious setting, with mature trees and (I notice) many big daylily clumps. What are some of the small trees pictured? Wouldn't have guessed you had deer problems. What keeps them away?

I still think your garden looks good. Ok, not the spectacular look it has during bloom season but it it still an attractive garden. That is because you have it nicely tended and those block edges give it such a tidy look.

What a lovely kitty Richard Greyfuss is and so lucky to have found a good home. I especially had to smile at the second picture of Greyfuss where he is being such a silly ninny. So cute.

Thanks! Mantis, I use Milorganite and Liquid Fence religiously to keep the deer in check. You wouldn't think there would be a deer problem here in suburbia, but this area used to be a huge apple orchard and they have been chased out of their habitat. Milorganite and Liquid Fence do have to be reapplied periodically to be effective! There are three small Japanese Maples growing in pots and a couple of others in the ground. They were particularly picked because they are small and stay small. On the far side of the yard, there are 3 crepe myrtles - great small ornamental trees ( they want to be shrubs and you have to MAKE them be trees by pruning them faithfully). We're right on the cusp of being able to grow them. 40 miles west (in Blacksburg VA) they won't survive the winters. They do fine here but, having seen them grow in places like Charleston, SC and Tidewater, VA areas, they prefer the hotter climates to really show off.

So when and how do you apply the Milorganite? I have about 12 deer now and hoped the deer hunters that ate the meat would thin them out some but the deer are smarter than them and now I am just feeling sorry for them! Not when they attack my roses though!! Do you just apply it around the border of your gardens or all thru out your gardens? I used Liquid Fence religiously too but I think they have gotten accustomed to it and just munch away. This is why after ten years I have let hunters come on the property. Sometimes enuf is enuf!!

Pretty petals, I have applied both Milorganite and Liquid Fence around the periphery of the garden. Both of these need to be reapplied after rain. We have had flooding rains through the night, so I'll have to get out later today and reapply. This fall, I just put Milorganite around the pansies to keep them aweay, because deer LOVE pansies and rip them right out of the ground here otherwise. But I have noticed the deer coming up the back bank in a few spots and am going to apply around the edges of the garden too. You are right, I think they get used to about anything. But I have tried everything else out there and have found these two products are the best (outside of installing a 10' deer fence!) Good luck. Deer can be devastating ( at least around here.) We have had former club members to just give up after repeated deer damage.

I also use Milorganite, and it has to be applied often to keep the deer at bay. I can tell when I need to re-apply it as they will have been in the gardens and someting will have been nibbled on!

LOL, Pam, yes I did write about the wreck to the robin. Having to deal with insurance adjusters, claims, estimates and getting the repairs done was not much fun. I did get Milorganite and Liquid Fence re-applied today after heavy rains, so hopefully the deer will make a wide detour around the garden!

I cannot imagine how annoying that Jeep disaster was! Whoever it was had better hope they were at least somewhat hurt, because the temptation to hurt them in response to the tree and the garden damage might otherwise be irrestible.

Kay,at first I was upset over the property damage but it has mostly been fixed now and I've come to realize that in proportion to other life problems, it is but a tiny "blip" on the radar of life! The insurance company actually settled and gave me every penny I asked for without much hassle - well, I had to jump through a few hoops - but all turned out OK!

Well with that beautiful garden and the damage, I would hope they would be eager to attempt to make amends. I love Nepeta, but have little luck with it since my outside cat acts the same way as Mr. Grayfus is acting! It really does attract cats, doesn't it?
