Hoya serpens new growth yellowing

Good Morning everyone. I have a dilemna that I hope someone here will be albe to help me with. I have a serpens that has shown great new growth over the past several months, including many peduncles. The problem that it is showing is, the long vines are yellowing and any new leaves are also yellowing. I have it is a 6" hanging basket, to the side of an East facing window. It gets no direct sun, but it is a some what bright spot. It is certainly not really dark shade. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Carol

I have a small serpens that I'm having the same problem with. I had it on a top shelf in my GH, so it was getting a LOT of light (however, because my GH roof glass has a thermal coating on it, the intensity isn't like it would be coming through untreated glass...) I thought maybe it was the high light and moved it down a shelf. I'd like to hear from experienced serpens growers about how much water they like since yellowing leaves is often due to over watering. I let mine get a little dry between waterings. Is this one that needs to go super-dry, or maybe it's one that should be kept a little wetter? I'll be interested in the responses to your question...

Thought I would update since no one else has jumped in here to give us advice... Looking at the Hawaiian vendor's site, she says about serpens that it needs "bright indirect light" and "lots of water" in good-draining soil. So I believe my problem is underwatering and not over watering as I was letting mine get relatively dry before watering. I'm hoping between more water and a little less light that mine will stop yellowing. Other than the new leaves turning yellow, it seems happy - peduncles trying to form flowers...

Pirate girl. I consider myself VERY lucky to have come across these two plants. One I bought at my local greenhouse, KQ, and when I bought it the owner told me that they rarely have them with flower buds. I live near Naples, NY and drove down to The Violet Barn, that is where I found the serpens. I think that they only offer rooted cutting for mail order though. The serpens is in a 5-6 inch pot and is COVERED with new growth. I looked at it last night, and counted 6 TINY peduncles and 2 that are a little bit larger. I really have my fingers crossed. Hey everyone... how are you doing? I got a new job so I can't spend so much time messing around on forums now, more's the pity! I've got new growth too - got real excited when I spotted a peduncle from my carnosa - that's why it's called Old Faithful! Got even more excited when I discovered there's at least FIVE more peduncles, with one getting quite big now. I love this plant! Got some growth going on the bella, a new leaf on my kerrii, the multiflora, engleriana, dickinsonia/weebella and my new lasiantha, leytensis and cinnamomifolia are all showing signs of growth. I'm now wondering whether it's safe (i.e. warm/sunny enough) to take some cuttings from the plants that aren't looking so good - my DS-70, lauterbachii and heuschkeliana are all looking a bit wrinkled in the leaf, just wondering what you guys think - take cuttings, give them a good soak and try and root them? Or do you think I'll lose both mother and baby plants?

Tammy, Wow, every two weeks?! The ones I have in the house (where we keep it cool, cool, COOL) get watered once a week pretty much year round. I don't like to let them get too dry... The ones in the GH get water every few days as they're out in the heat. It's hard to keep up with the watering in the GH this time of year as I have lots of other succulents to stay on top of also. That little serpens, though, is a bugger. I've found it's a tough one to water right. The fine line between too much water, which causes the leaves to yellow and drop, and too little water, which makes them dry up, is like walking a tight-rope! It's been doing pretty good lately - I put it in the sunroom late this winter because I read they don't like it real hot, and I think between the cooler temp and the ceiling fan that blows constantly, I've got the right conditions now. I had a serpens few years ago, it grow well, but never flowered. But it kept trying, but droped the buds in very early stage. It died when it was two years old, but it was quite big. It grow for me fast. For a few years a gave up on it, but then when I wanted to try it again, I couldn´t find did, and when I did, it was very expensive. Finally, this spring, I found small rooted cutings, on ebay. When it came, I had to put it out and cut roots a little bit, because they started rotting, and I potted it again, but from 2 plants, I made 8 small plants. They are something like 2 months old now. I came to the conclusion, from other peoples experiances and a little bit from my own, that she likes to be moist, at all times, but not wet. Foliage and the soil. I water it, but not too heavily, and spray it every day, sometimes more and sometimes less, depends on the free time. Since I have very bad experiance with hoyas and overwatering, even that I know that serpens doesn´t like to dry up, I have the need to let it dry up just for a day (I am checking it regulary), I am too afraid of a root rot. But, I have to tell you, that usually, that last day before watering, when it`s soil is dried up totaly, I alway find one or two yellow leaves, and that prooves that it really doesn´t like to dry up completely. But, at this time, I am not ready to water it more freqently, but I will probably try it eventually.

It also seems real touchy about potting up to a bigger container. It likes to be sort of damp, but if it is in too big a pot, it turns yellow from too much water also. I try to leave it in a small pot for a long time. Mine also does not like much direct sun. I have it outside now in the shade of the porch and it likes it there.
I have killed a few of these myself. Ha.

Well Gang,

May I pls. be the voice of caution here & while I wish both your Serpens to recover, I encourage taking healthy cuttings now (just in case).

Unfortunately, I lost this Hoya to this kind of ailment several yrs. ago. When I first got it, a couple of bits broke off & I sent them to Ooojen along w/ some other plants. She since posted that it's grown on for her to the point of even blooming!

She's even offered me some of it back which I do plan on taking her up on, I'm just a bit too chicken___ abt it still. Mine had been a quick favorite in a pretty big full pot (6" maybe) & I loved it dearly, very cool texture & sort of dainty look abt it.

She's the only one I know of who seems to be able to grow this w/out much trouble. I think I'll go over to Houseplants & ask her to come here to share some tips w/ all of us.

Thanks, Karen. Any help will be much appreciated. I was just over on Christina's site (myhoys.com) reading about serpens and she's had trouble with it too, apparently! So I don't feel so bad... Anyway, in her notes about it, she says she believes it prefers "cooler temps." Mine is in the GH, which gets rather hot during the day, so I think I'll move it into the house in an east window. We'll see how that goes, and I'll be checking back to see if Jen replies...
