Finally made the trip to SRQ Hoyas

So, Ive been planning to visit SRQ Hoyas the next time we were in Florida. I finally got to go last week!! She has an AMAZING collection! I could have stayed forever taking everything in. She had so many plants that I had never seen in person plus most were in bloom!! This was my first time meeting Joni and she was such a sweetheart. I am very grateful for her to allow me to visit her home/growing area and select my Hoyas. Thank you Joni!

The Hoyas I got were:

H. Caudata
H. Subcalva
H. Rubida
H. Onychoides
H. Potsii
H. aff Chuniana
H. Bicknelii
H. Diptera (splotched)
and a very cute Noid

Then on the way home I found Dragon Fruit plants for sale. Ive always wanted to grow these. So I got several cutting of those and 2 cutting of Vanilla Orchid.

And my first day home I received a box from a very kind Clivia Forum Friend. She had mailed me 9 Gorgeous Clivias.

Now these last couple days have been busy potting plants! That is why it has taken me awhile to get this picture posted.

Ive never grown any of these Hoyas so any suggestions, I'm all ears....

Very nice!

I've never taken the opportunity to pick Hoyas in person. But I'm moving to that area in less than two weeks, so maybe after we get settled, I can treat myself.

Renee, nice to have you moving closer to the Center of the state, though it sounds like you'll be on the West Coast...I live a couple of hours south of Orlando, but used to live in Bradenton for 12 years just a few minutes north of Sarasota where SRQ Hoyas is located... Your winter will be several degrees warmer for you than in N.Fl.

Sorry, Mitzi. I should have clarified. Yes, as you inferred, "caught the _____ bug" has an informal meaning. It means "a sudden strong interest in doing something." Example sentence: "I bought one Hoya and immediately caught the bug (=became very interested in Hoyas). Source: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English "Bug" is used informally in this way because bug can also mean a harmful microorganism that causes illness. For example, if you got sick with a cold, you might say "I caught a bug." So, when people say they caught the "Hoya bug" they are saying that they are suddenly very passionate about Hoyas. As though they caught a disease and can't control their behavior. Hope that makes sense! For the record, it took me a long time to figure out what they meant by "EA Hoya," too. Even if English is your native language, it takes time to understand the "lingo" (= specific vocabulary) of a group. Also, I never notice you misspelling anything! You're too hard on yourself. What I do notice is that your English has gotten a lot more fluent since you started talking to us!

Nice. I got some from her recently as well. citrina (2), pauciflora, publicalyx Black Dragon, sp. Fidjii, finlaysonii, siamica, verticillata albomarginate. I was planning on waiting until some of my wish listed plants were ready, but oh well, guess I was caught up in spring fever. Plus when wish listed plants are available, its an excuse to order more - cause you can't let plants travel alone right? One more thing about clear pots, and this comes from my orchid background. For small ones, under 4 inch, I always use food grade clear plastic cups, etc. For starting seedlings I either use the small clear plastic dixie type cups. For 3 inch pots I use the clear solo plastic cups. The individual pudding cups make great starter pots, and the clear plastic lids you get from the drive through at Dairy Queen make pretty good pots also. I just poke drainage holes in the bottom and voila, a perfectly sized clear pot. They may not last outside as long as the pots made for plants, but as I use them for smaller starts, they are ready to be repotted up before the little pots degrade. Renee

Thanks for the post, Aurora. I was able to replace the one plant I lost during my move that I was really surprised and disappointed by. I wonder why Joni brought the plants back. On one hand, it made sense to me that she cut them, because I do think Hoyas like to be rooted in their final environment. On the other hand, I always liked getting her potted plants, because they weren't too old to adjust and had their feet under them.

I don't know this for sure, but from her language, it seems to me that Joni's "bloomingest Hoyas" list refers to how frequently the species bloom, not how early. That is a nice reference, though. For me the earliest bloomers were javanica, lasiantha, heuschkeliana, davidcummingii, finlaysonii (and all closely related species e.g. sp. Kalimantan, callistophylla, etc), DS-70, tsangii (NOT wayetii - form. odetteae), lanceolata ssp. bella, lacunosa, publicalyx 'Silver Pink', carnosa, lobbii, litoralis, cystiantha, pachyclada, cv. Christine, australis, fungii, obscura, patella, polyneura, polystacha, EPC-229, tomataensis, paulshirleyii I just received manipurensis from Joni, which she says is an early bloomer, on her blog. She sent me a plant with a mature peduncle, but it has already formed a second peduncle and has bloomed constantly since arriving, so I am quite impressed with it. If you just put your carnosa in good light, (e.g. right up against an east or south window) it is probably mature enough that it will bloom the next season. A lot of Hoyas are like this - if you've had them 2-3 years and they aren't blooming, bump up the light and away you go. Many of them are tolerant enough to bloom in inadequate light; it just takes them a lot longer. But I don't think carnosa really fits into this category - I find it very very stingy with flowers indeed, if the light is not high enough. So stingy it will only bloom once every 10 years, maybe. So you might as well give it what it wants! ;) The three you list are all early bloomers and good bloomers. H. lobbii bloomed last of these for me, but it is a personal favorite because once it matured it immediately formed many peduncles and bloomed consistently. Like many Hoyas, its buds develop in waves, so that as one group of flowers expires, the others open, so the blooming period seems to stretch on forever. Congratulations on your haul. They look just gorgeous!!

Most of those require pretty general care. The only specific remark I have is that when I keep my caudatas in an aquarium, they grow like gangbusters. You could probably say that about any Hoya, but it's more interesting with caudata, because some people have trouble with it acting like a plastic plant. It's not fussy at all, or in need of pampering, like some Hoyas I could name >_>, but it can be slow without extra humidity.

Thanks Everyone. Renee, yes I was on vacation. We stayed in Orlando a week 1/2, then drove down to Sarasota. I would LOVE to live in Florida. When you get the chance, I highly recommend going to SRQ. Joni is very nice. Its an experience you will remember forever. I saw Hoyas in bloom, that I will never get the chance to see in person again. She grows Beautiful plants.

GG, I appreciate the heads up on Caudata. I had read up a little about it. I knew several people grew it in an aquarium. So thats where it will probably reside. I was a little leary about getting cuttings. I have very little experience with Hoya cuttings. Ive rooted all of 2 prior to going there!!! But luckily I was able to get mostly plants. Plus I didn't know how the cuttings would do in the hotel 4 days and travel home! But thankfully they seem to be dong very well.

Pug, you have a great collection! I was happy to see you still growing (and blooming) when you posted this month. And your Signillas blooms look different from any I can find on the internet. Is it maybe they are just fully open and others havent opened completely yet? Or is there different IMLs like Caudata has?

Hi Tess, NO, it isn't a different clone...its the normal Sigillatis as far as I know. It was definitely the way I took the picture...I think it was just starting to open and that's why it looked like that,lol...just took it at the right time I guess.

Thank you for letting me know about the email!!! I had to update my email and GW had to change it for me. I bet it got changed then. I email with others but we've been emailing for awhile.
