A new hoya cutting.

Today I received two boxes with some cuttings.The cuttings came from Paul Shirley and Botanova. I was surprised by how large the leaf was on H.glabra,its huge bigger than my hand.

A few photos of the cuttings while I was getting them ready.My husband was home from work today and was getting a bit excited with the camera being around all the wet and dirt,so not to many photos.

I have to say that I am very happy with the cuttings from both PS and Botanova and would recommend both to any one looking from hoya cuttings.

Mike I received sp 7-35,this one is so much bigger then I imaged it would be and palawan GPS 9057.

Cindy did you splurge and get Hoya grifithii from Botanova? That is the Hoya that holds the most wanted spot on my want list.

The leaf on your Hoya glabra cutting is amazing. I have had Hoya glabra for close to a year and it's biggest leaf is only 4.5" long by about 3" across.
The leaves on my 7-35 are fairly large when grown in low light but I moved my plant this spring and it's leaves are developing much smaller and more uniform.

What is the cutting with the slightly folded leaves with raised veins, far left potted plant in the third photo? It looks like a smaller version of my Hoya megalaster.

So do you have a favorite?

Well as you can see, many of us have our own favorites. No they don't go dormant over winter, tho' some do slow down in growth. While I adore Krimson Queen as does Gabi above, I find it wayyyyy to slow a grower & frustrates me no end. I find the same w/ Carnosa, but most folks find Carnosas easy (& readily available); I find nothing wrong w/ growing common Hoyas, esp. if one has few options to buy (which does NOT sounds like your case). Nice haul you've got there, got started w/ a BANG there, didn't you! I know I'm jealous (I'm sure I'm not alone in that). What to buy next, hum, depends on how you grow, if you want things that like more moist or not. I find easy Hoyas to be Kerrii & Obovata (both large leafed, they'll need room), tho' you can hoop them (& I do) to keep them contained, & Lacunosa, which charms me no end & reminds me of pretty, glossy, citrus leaves (which likes it more moist, I keep that somewhat wicked). Crassipes is also very easy tho' I don't know of anyone else who has it (except Dufflebag (Norma) who gave me mine). Also Curtissi's a little charmer, small, marbled lt & dk green/gray ogee shaped leaves, very easy lom-maintenance Hoya, one of my oldest (also does well mounted on bark). Pubicalyx comes in various varieties (Splash or Silver Pink, Red Buttons (1 Kloppenburg gave Norma who gave to me, which he calls) Fresno, some others. All handsome, long eliptical leaves w/ pointy ends, often splashed w/ silver speckles; prone to sprawling everwhere w/ long vines that start out bare & eventually fill in (I also hoop this 'cause it likes to tangle its vines in everything nearby including the cords for the blinds). You might take a look at some Hoya sites & find foliage you find attractive, this way if yours take a while to bloom, you'll still have foliage that you love (I feel very much this way abt Lacunosa, if she never blooms, I'll still love her). I've had cuttings w/ spurs on them bloom while still rooting in water (Nummulariodes & Krinkle 8). Currently I have a yr. old cutting of Shephardii in a tiny condiment cup (the smallest container I could find), it's got a tiny spur starting for months now, I just have to be patient. I believe this 'lanceolate' Bella name is incorrect even if from Loggees (they should know better). Bella by definition has smallish lance-shaped leaves, so it's sort of silly & redundant, but OK. Hoyas are largely pretty care-free plants, fairly bug-free (tho' beware mealies, 'cause they can spread like wildfire thru a Hoya collection). I've currently got 30 or so + abt 5 duplicates. Gabi I feel the same about the finlaysonii leaves. I just recently got meredithii from (kartuz grenhouses). Also purchased h. mindorensis and obscura. Wanted h. pentaphlebeta too but didn't have it. I have ordered from bob smoley Hoya Callistophylla "sabah" but he didn't have this one avaliable at this time and H. finlaysonii (didn't say specifics on the description just hoya finlaysonii) and this one he did have. I have not received my order yet though. I also have H. caudata and H. nicholsoniae. And from the unnamed hoya grower in hawaii I have h. acuta, h. citrina, h. cv. christine, h. flavescens, h. imperialis, and h. ban ngon ngoy. They will be shipped out tomorrow and I should get them Thursday by fed ex. And from ebay, these are rooted cuttings. H. subquintuplinervous and h. loyceandrewisiana. Have you herd of these before? They seemed like really long names and knew I didn't have them even if their id's were wrong. From Gardino Nursery H kerrii, h. kerrii reverse, and verg. macrophylla. It's not necessary, but I do use a baggie so I don't have to worry about it drying out if I'm too busy to check it daily (especially when it's warm like this...) If it's one of the long cuttings, I just cut a hole in the corner of the bag, pull the stem and leaves through so that the baggie will go over the pot, then clip the bag closed over the stem with a mini hair clip. The little "tent" over the soil seems to speed up the rooting process. And Ines is right, how long it takes depends a lot on the variety. I've had some set roots in a week, but I've got a 'Krinkle 8' I got almost 2 months ago that is just now developing roots. Denise in Omaha

Paula I think you may have matched the wrong photo up with the caption. Hoya subquintuplinervis does have thick, rigid and similarly veined leaves to my Hoya sp Sulawesi but it was originally collected in Thailand and my plant is from the large island of Sulawesi which is located off of the eastern shore of Kalamantan on the Island of Borneo and below the Philippine islands which apparently most heavily influence the flora of the Sulawesi. I included a map of South East Asia in case anyone wanted to take a look. It is interesting to look up the locations where many of the unidentified Hoya species were collected, Islands like Ambon, Palawan, Haraku and Molukken. Part of determining the proper name for a species lies in the area of it's origin. Some species have a very large range while others are endemic so even though many Hoyas look alike they may in all reality not be as closely related as they appear. Many of the smaller islands are obviously not included on the map but there are several of the ones I mentioned. Mike Here is a link that might be useful:

Those are some lovely looking cuttings! It must have been fun to receive them today. I keep trying to see what cagayanensis leaves look like, but I can't seem to match the label to the right stem, ha. Oh well. How long did your orders take to get to you? They look like they are in fabulous shape.

Mike I have 3 that I really like and they are australis IML 253/pubescens,sp GPS 7-35,but scortechinii comes in the winer.I really hope it keeps the red leaves.
The hoya you are asking about came from PS and its merillii GPS 10018.
I am sad to say that I am not a owner of grifithii.To rich for me.
It will be interesting to see if my glabra will grow leaves this large in my care.
I must say that if wallichii ever blooms for me this for sure will become my fav for flowers.
I hope my husband is not home when my Ted order comes in.He was all ready asking how much these 20 hoya cuttings cost.

quinnfyre,Yes it was fun to get so many cuttings but it was a lot of work getting them all potted up.The cuttings from PS took about 2 weeks and the ones from Botanova just one week.All the cuttings arrived in great shape.Only pubicalyx GPS 1774 was a bit stressed but I think it should be fine. Tomorrow If I get some time I will post a photo of cagayanensis.

Mike, maybe your asking about The hoya in the 5th pot. This hoya came from Botanova and its australis "eungella".I really like the flowers on the australis hoya so I am trying to get few different ones.

Cindy I think that is the one, it has really nice leaves. When your Hoya scortechinii get s big enough to share let me know because I got Hoya sp UT 001 recently and I am sure you would love it.

Thanks every one,I love opening up the boxes and seeing what I got.Like seeing glabra come out of the box.I was a bit shocked.
Mike I would love to do a trade as soon as scortechinii is bigger.

Cindy I will start you a piece now and we can talk about the trade later. Even if it's not Hoya scortechinii I am sure you have other Hoyas that are large enough to trade.

Hoya cagayanensis is a really nice little Hoya. The leaves look like satin and the plant itself is a good grower and it climbs very well. I had to get this one because the blooms are supposed to be very fragrant. I found my plant tricky to grow at first because it was not in my mix but once it gets started it's a fast grower.

Beautiful cuttings Cindy, Can I ask if you are going to close them up in what looks like a plastic bag for some humidity? If so how long do you leave them in this temporary home?

Hi dee yes I am using those large storage zip lock bags and I do close them.I usually keep them in there bags about 6 weeks and one more week opening the top for a few hours adding more time every day until they come out.This year I have rushed some out and now they are suffering a bit.I have even lost a couple.

OK, I thought that is what you were doing. Wish I could send you some of my humidity, uuggghh, this past week has been nasty humid. I don't mind the heat, but when the humidity gets to be 80- 100% nothing is fit to be out in it, even the flowers suffer a little. Sorry to hear about your loss.
