The Three Amigos by Gary Schaben

Gary Schaben has a trio of unusual forms (one pinched crispate and two cascade) that he collectively calls THE THREE AMIGOS. Now that is not actually the name of a daylily, or at least the real name of any of these daylilies as they are NORTH WIND MOE, NORTH WIND LARRY and NORTH WIND CURLY JOE.

I would like to know if anyone has tried any of these three and what do you think of them? As Gary is up in Michigan they should be nice and northern hardy.

I especially (at least from the picture) like the looks of NORTH WIND LARRY and am even thinking of going off in a very dareing (at least for me!) direction and buying THE THREE AMIGOS Collection.

Still I would like to hear more before I spend my money. Thanks!

They are too new to be widely distributed. If they grow in zone 4 they will definitely be hardy in your zone 7 garden.

Hey, I thought the snow in Ontario was melting. Seriously, I wondered how daylilies could be ready to dig up there so very early in the year but figgured since Melanie and Bryan do this every year, they have it figgured out. Guess I will find out in a few weeks! My crocus are finially blooming and been blooming for days now. Daffodils not yet and no tulips bloming here. I know some tulips are early and some much later but I have not had tulips here for awhile ( I have them and they slowely fade out after some years). I bought two bags of 40 each in Home Depot last fall and can't remember which type they are. As to the garden work around here, every year it seems endless but last year truely was the most ambitious to date. Even though its so early now that the garden is just starting to green up and too early for planting, I look around at what was acomplished last year and I am so extremely pleased with my garden. Now after this spring when I get those newly established beds planted, I am going to be one happy gardener. The funny part is that I enjoyed last summer more than I can say and just loved it. I have started on my garden work by starting on my transplanting. I ALWAYS have things to move in the spring. Moved back a row of servicebery shrubs after I moved the row of hollyhocks planted in back of them. What was I thinking? Who plants a row of shrubs in front of a row of flowers? Oh, well its fixed now. Thought it would be a big project as those shrubs, planted when very, very small (about 6-9 inches) are now about 5 feet but the root systems were not so big and came up easily. I am really pleased with the garden bed the way it looks now with things moved and the shrubs in back. It gives me room to plant two rows of daylilies in front of those shrubs. I plan to make this my late and extra late daylily garden. Only lates and extra lates will go there. Moved most of the roses that needed it and have one small one to pot up and alittle more to do. Cleaned out my "ponds" which were full of leaves from the fall and winter. I just dump them and refill with clean water. Need to move some daylilies which should be the next thing I get too.

Planting Daylilies Again Today

Ha. I received a box of daylilies in the mail today and planted them all to boot. Since my mail comes really late, at about 4 o'clock I don't have that much time to get it done. But this was my order from Diane Kendig of Perfect Perennials and only 7 plants so wasn't a big deal to get done. Gezz, since I got a daylily order in the mail Monday I am on a roll. Two orders planted the same day they arrived, a big record breaking event around here. Now its raining, which is great timing as it will water in all my new daylilies. I bought six of Dale Thomas daylilies which are all lates and very lates. I don't think he is that well known but I found his daylilies for sale at the Hardyhems site. Since I wanted later bloomers that worked out well. I have a daylily garden I am doing all late and very late bloomers so these went in there. Then I also got Stuart Kendigs fabulous WATERMELLON LUMINOSITY which I planted in the daylily garden done this spring by by driveway. Things are looking good around here. Only two more orders of daylilies to come. One is a one plant order and the other afew daylilies from Bill Maryott should come late June. My order of phlox that I mail ordered is coming this week and I have some Tropical Milkweed ordered should show up one day and thats all my mailorders. In one section of the driveway side garden I have daylilies in the front and back rows and in the middle I have some daylilies and I am putting the phlox there. Seemed like a good idea to me.

Rebloom Scapes already

The way I understand it is that most daylilies finish blooming completely and then rest before reblooming. We will see what I get in those reblooms. But these are deffinte rebloom scapes that are coming up out of fans that are currently blooming. With about 400 daylilies, these few are exactly that, afew. But I have many late blooming daylilies so you would not expect them to rebloom or if they did it would be much later as they either just started or haven't even started blooming. So cross off about 80 daylilies. Cross off the EE ones that I don't know will ever make anything of themselves so had another 20 and cross off 100. Then my first year mostly southern type evergreens probably a waste of time to expect to rebloom. About another 100 or so in this catagory. Out of the 200 left, many are not even listed as rebloomers such as most Melanie Mason and Phil Korth intros. I do understand that many of them do or might rebloom so we will see. That leaves me with my Emmeriches, which I bought just about only listed rebloomers, same with my Don Herr and Richard Norris intros.

I'm with Debra. I'm really out of space right now. But here's 10 that I'd like to have anyway - just don't mention it to my DH. Many are older varieties that I just can't seem to get from the growers I've ordered from: Antique Rose Borders On Pink Chicago Candy Cane Christopher Russell Comic Strip Georgia O'Keefe Heavenly Angel Ice Iron Eyes Rainbow Over Georgia Hold Your Horses. I have seen both Heavenly Angel Ice and Hold Your Horses In Person. Both are just beautiful daylilies. HAI is very white and has the prettiest ruffles on a UFO that you've ever seen. Hold Your Horses is just plain awesome. The flower is huge, and held up high on the plant. It's a plant that you notice from a distance, and you have to walk over to it to take a closer look. Hopefully my hybridizer friends who are growing both plants will get some good increase and I will be able to add both plants to my garden next spring! Linda

Hi Rita,

If I had the money I would buy at least one of these daylilies. I have North Wind Dancer coming in the spring and it was fantastic in every garden I saw it in. I think these will be very good as well. I especially like North Wind Moe.

My closest friend lives in Minneapolis. I have spent meny a winter there. If a DL can make it there they are HARDY!!!! COLD is not the word!!! unreal cold!
The three together are STUNNING and two are full sibs--they complement
each other. Gary Schaben's comment on their personalities is great!

GO for it NYR!!! maybe I'll get them too!

It's gary with a small gee, not Gary.

I almost ordered all three of them the year they came out. Then forgot about them. Now you've made me think about them again. :)

I like all three, but I am partial to UF's. I also think the names are fun and clever - and smart. Who would want to break up the three stooges or the three amigo's, right? They belong together.

Well, I waited awhile but now the price on the collection has gone down from the original $450.00 to $350.00 so I wrote out my check today to mail on Monday. These three daylilies should look smashing in my garden. I also ordered RASPBERRY BLING as I couldn't resist that one either!!!

Well, unless some miracle happens they'll still be out of my price range for a while but I have been looking at Susan Weber who is the parent of two of them. I've read she is a fantastic parent and these certainly confirm that. Her influence is obvious in the bright clear coloring and signature edges.

These will go on my want list for when the price comes down.

I saw NW Moe and MW Curly Joe at a garden on the national tour last summer (NW Larry was probaly there,too, but I'm partial to the purply-lavender-pink ones and take special note of those). Gorgeous! I really liked Moe. I know I took a picture of it. Now to find which card it is on.
I think you will love them all.

I did get them and plant them but they are all small. Its going to be awhile before I get bloom (if I get it this year). I also got TALL ANNIE and planted it near the three others.
