to uncover or not?

It looks like I have a chance at another frost in a couple days? Still iffy I suppose. I have the few pips up covered.. there is no way I can hurt them by leaving them covered a few days is there? I don't think it is supposed to be really warm anytime until then.. Possibly 60 degrees or so.

I would rather just leave them alone for now, but obviously I will uncover them if that is best.

Just thought I would ask for opinions..

Well, like you, I'm an ethusiast, not an expert, but I had a lot of mine covered up with mulch for four days this week, and when I uncovered them, they not only seemed fine, but they had grown a bit! LOL

I think they'll be just fine, and if you DO get frost, they'll probably be all the better for it.

Depends on how warm it gets and how long you intend to keep them covered. If you have a black pot covering a Hosta and it gets to 60 degrees outside then you could overheat that Hosta. If you are using a frost blanket like Remay or something similar that allows light through keep them covered.

I had a few plastic pots covering early risers last night. I took them off when the temps got to 50 this morning and will recover them tonight as the temps are forecast to 32* once again tonight.

I've had granite on my outdoor BBQ counter for 8 years. I'm in So. CA and the 12 ft run of counter faces west and south. It gets sun year round and gets baked in the summer. No issues with the counters other than they get very dirt and it is one more outside chore. We had a built up bullnose edge and some of it came unglued after a few years in the sun. I had a GC fix it last year when he was here for another project and he said they probably didn't use the right "glue". I would skip any built up edges if I was doing this again. If you have a real quartzite, then I would think it would be fine outside. I think you have to be ok with it getting some stains since you might not always clean up after cooking outside. My counter has some oil/marinade stains right next to the grill. I have cleaned the stains up before, but it takes lots of scrubbing. I just never think to go back outside and wipe it down after eating dinner!

Just messaged you :-) I leave the top on for about 8 - 10 months. They do grow slowly. 3/4" to 1" actually seems pretty big for 2 months old.

I don’t think the porch has enough space. But measure it and see if you can fit two benches. I would probably do some flowers or greenery in pretty pots. And then do a small seating area to the left of the porch.

Actually I found out by comparison that a microwave vent hood does do something if it is vented to the outside. My original apartment had a 1960s range hood that was a little fan in the center under the duct and a bare light bulb. The apartment stunk like fried food when I bought it, but I moved in in the summer and there was still Christmas tree needles and a piece of candy the realtor's son had stomped under his foot at least 6 months earlier still on the floor when I moved in. So I don't think the smell was from actually Using an ineffective hood. The previous tenant cleaned by shoving the visible debris under the furniture. We reconfigured the kitchen slightly and determined there was another duct to the exterior, and we used that one. What we found out was it also connected to the powder room downstairs from the kitchen and when we fired up the MW hood you got a powerful blast of hot air from the kitchen when you opened the powder room door. So not only did it exhaust, it exhausted vertically Down, which the range hood experts in the Kitchen Forum says does not happen at all. I don't think the MW range hood is adequate for every situation, and I don't think down drafts are effective at getting the vapors Into the duct, but the "0" or "100" scale that they use to rate what you should have as a range hood (It should suck a tennis ball through a gardenhose to be acceptable at all), is kind of ridiculous.

if you mean covered by nature.. they will grow up thru it.. when they are darn well ready.. and hopefully by then.. frost will be gone ... it actually keeps the soil COOLER.. retarding early spring growth... which is good in frost/freeze areas....

if you mean man made covering... then i dont know ... because you didnt say that

Yeah I had covered with containers. I think I will go uncover them as I don't have that many containers out ...Most will be in the shade all day.. but I am going to go uncover them as it is nearly 60 now. ...just to be safe.

I don't think there is any danger until they are leafed out and I'm sure yours aren't in Z5. In am in Z5a and see hardly any pips yet. This is the ideal spring for hostas I think. A few years ago, mine all got zapped with a late frost. I have way too many to cover and they looked ratty for the whole summer.

This year I saw a few of my early risers get a nip on some tender pips. Like the Sagae. But consider that I am zone 9a. I did not cover them when we went down to 38, and then my Sagae had the outer leaf on its eyes tip damaged. However, I can hardly see the damage in the photos unless I blow them up very big.

I'll be so glad when the weather is constant and the trend is toward the warmer side....just not TOO warm, and lots of rain.
