Shooting Star.....shooting!!
Comments (7)@ Amber Mine is in a heavy pot. It's unsupported atm because it had that setback over the winter, so it's just getting bushy again. In the past, I put a hoop in there just to give it a better center of gravity. When I need to do so again, I'll probably just bind the lower section of each branch to a couple not-too-ugly short stakes. The hoop looked so stupid! @ gmadarr Hoyas on a boat = awesome!!! I wouldn't use vermiculite with Hoyas at all. They really don't need that extra water retention, so save it for your other plants. I had assumed you were rooting in 100% perlite using the semi-hydro method. There are some who use it in place of hydroton, as a temporary rooting medium. Or, do you mean that you were using a medium of perlite + potting soil, and you are concerned about having some algae growth on the top level? Or you just don't like the aesthetics? You can kill the algae with a bit of hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. Or there are various algae killing solutions available for sale that can be mixed in when you water. But, really, the algae is just growing in the aquarium context because it never fully dries out and there is little air flow. Once you remove the plants from the aquarium, after they are rooted, the perlite will whiten up again. So, I don't get too bothered about it, myself, even though I do have algaecide on hand....See MoreWho has fuji shooting star in Zone 7?
Comments (19)I believe the hydrangea is "Sumida no Hanabi", which means the fireworks of the Sumida river. It was first planted by a nurseryman, Kakouen, in Kanagawa, Japan. Then was named as "Sumida no Hanabi" by Mr. Yamamoto, a founder of Japan Hydrangea Soc. http://www.exblog.jp/blog_logo.asp?slt=1&imgsrc=200606/22/75/f0050275_9545394.jpg It looks very similar to "Fuji Waterfall (serrata)" in photo but you can distinguish "Sumida" is a macrophylla from the size of the flower and the big leaf. Sumida often comes out in the autumn. And it sometimes becomes like a mophead, called as tower-like blooming style....See MoreShooting for the moon - Is my 36' range search in vain?
Comments (12)Buying used is going to be your best bet. Also, check scrach and dent and Ebay. But be careful on Ebay. Lots of scams there. Other than that, you're going to have to change your criteria or change your budget. I ought to know. I ended up with a GE Cafe 30" and am rather glad I didn't go the 36" route. The oven would have been too large for me, and I really like the second small oven in the Cafe. The 18K burner rocks, and I've used the griddle for pancakes several times. I really didn't need 36" for functionality. Yes, it would have looked better to have a 36" range, but I really didn't "settle" for anything that I would have been really willing to hike the budget to double what I paid to get....See MoreWill Shooting Stars Dodecatheon meadia bloom this year?
Comments (2)And bear in mind that it may be 3 or 4 years before they flower. Mine did for the first time this year...and I was amazed at how many flowers on one stalk (12 I think)...but being ephemeral it takes them a while to "charge"....See Moregreedygh0st
