curtsii and other ???s

I have a "NOID" that I got from my sister which I had ID as curtsii. Denise sent me one on trade marked curtsii. At first they look VERY much alike. Today I notice the leaves on the one Denise sent me (cutting/just rooting) are very thick compared to my NOID. Are they the same?

My hoyas all seem quite happy. They are growing and look GOOD. Where are the blooms? (I've blooms fixing to open on one) Some of my hoyas are in a southern exposure window and some are on an outside screened porch (some north and some west). I know some may not be getting enough sun but I'm ready for some BLOOMS. In addition I have 2 out under a tree..

Am I just being impatient? I started with hoyas about 10/06 so it has not been very long. Even though I have not be rewarded with blooms I'm up to 35 plants. (my motto: if it is worth doing it is worth OVER doing!)

I know there are two types of curtisii, and one supposedly has a smaller leaf - not sure about thickness - any pictures?

yes, you need patience with these plants, and you should enjoy them without the flowers - I grew carnosa and pubicalyx for years, thinking they never bloomed outside of a greenhouse, but I didn't care becuase I liked the foliage. Even now I pick my plants based on foliage more than flowers, because that's what you will be seeing the most of.

Which hoyas do you have? Some bloom young, some have to be mature, but there are always exceptions to the rule - some people have cuttings bloom - never happened to me, though. So, you should make your growing conditions as good as possible, and just be patient! As for doing all the right things and over thinking it, some of my plants bloomed for years before I found out about hoyas, I didn't fertilize, I underwatered, and they flowered like crazy - so sometimes you just have to step back and let it happen, doing too much isn't always good.

Hi Laura,

I have no idea about the curtisii(s). I just got one and was surprised by the diddy leaves - surprising how the photos can make you think that all hoyas have the similar sized leaves, got caught out by Kerrii before!

The trick with Hoyas, I have learnt, is excessive patience. I look at my DS-70 and lacunosa almost with an accusatory eye, as in, you're supposed to be free flowering, and where are your flowers? Then, my australis suprises me by setting buds in spring, when it's supposed to be an autumn flowerer.

Do you have a link to these "natural antagonist"? The red blotch seems always with Amaryllis. After one year, research, shopping Amaryllis online and local. I can see red blotch in all products sold. Most are minor infected, but it is obvious to the eye from my experience. I derived a process below, so it is under control and none observed so far on my 1st bulb started 5 weeks ago. It is in full bloom now, started at the south warm window and moved to the cooler north side of the house to slow the flowering process. I am starting a 2nd one today using the same process. The attached photo was the new bulb I bought this year from local. The seven I bought last year are still in the dominant state. 1. Keep the bulb dry at all time, 2. Bottom-up watering, 3. On new bulb, I start it soaking in bleach mix with hot water at 120F water bath for a few hours, 3. Then dry it out with a small fan on it for a couple days while the bulb starting on the water with base plate slightly above the water line. 4. Transplant bulb to a pot after a few days with loose soil (cactus type mix) with bottom of the pot touching a pan of water, 5. The bulb will look bone dry with green flower spike coming up, 6. After the flower above to start out, put the pot in a tall glass cylinder to help support the height of the plant with foam or cardboard cut out at the top of the glass cylinder. I bought seven this year below (6), first one was from Home Depot at $7 each but smaller than these at the high-end local nursery at $17 each. These are big over a pound in weight, one tip the scale at 23 oz. So I have 14 total in my collection and curious how last year bulb turns out.

Bart: I do not know if there would be anywhere near my home where they sold horse food and could buy some sack of alfalfa (dry grass cut). I do not know if dry would be effective for this end of the basal shoots. I guess so. But two years ago I put as a padding of the orchard terraces spikes of dry cereal and cut into small pieces. It was terrible, thousands of seeds began to germinate and all the vegetable patches were filled with buds. I'm afraid to use alfalfa in this format for possible outbreaks. My desire is to find it in the form of a pellet. So many beautiful plants everyone! I'm really enjoying this thread & hope you are too. Socks, your variegated Scheflera is so pretty! Whenever I see them, I think of Puerto Rico, the hotel had hundreds of them throughout the paths. Crenda, I love your white edged bromeliad, I don't recall seeing that type before. All wonderful plants and I love your pool & bar set up! SLD, Holy mackerel, AV 'Happy Herald' is freakin' amazing! LOVE IT!!! I have hoya bella too, yours looks so much better, I need to repot mine soon. This is a yellow variegated Iris, (maybe 'Aureo Variegata') I planted it last summer and am happy that it made it through winter. This is my first time seeing it bloom. :) A variegated sedum (aka stonecrop). Also planted this last year. I noticed today that this a non-variegated section, perhaps someday I'll move that part. The top left little thing is variegated Bishops weed, (not a weed to me) it's been fried in the past years droughts and I am happy it is a survivor. The bottom plant, the variegated Ajuga, I bought recently at Walmart for under $2, and am pleasantly surprised at the pretty bloom. -Nancy

As a side note: The father of Gigi Haddid was building some hideously over-sized monstrosity in this area, and the foundations supporting the hillside mansion didn’t pass building inspections. Pere Haddid was told to stop further construction, orders which he ignored. After some back-and-forth — maybe some court orders were involved — not only was work permanently halted, but what had been completed was ordered demolished, and was subsequently torn down.

If the markings are similar, it's probably just the difference in cultivation. My mother grows the old-fashioned green carnosa and her's has much less succulent leaves than mine. I used to think maybe they were different clones, but then I took cuttings of hers and started growing that one myself and - guess what? The leaves were thicker for me. Why? Because I water less, which makes the leaves store more moisture.

I hate to tell you this, but I think I didn't get a single bloom on a Hoya for the first 10 years I grew them. Of course, I got my first back in the 70's and there weren't a lot of sources or a lot of information out there on Hoyas, so I didn't have more than a few for many, many years. But most Hoyas have to reach a certain maturity before they'll bloom, and the conditions have to be right. You have the ideal conditions in Florida, so I have a feeling you won't have to live long without blooms!

Hi all, there are at least two very different curtisii, not only in size but also in the shape of the leaves. I am on the road now so I can't post pictures of mine but I have both of these and they are NOT the same. I'm attaching a link to a blog that shows both of the ones I have, the upper right photo is the Philippines 'small leaf' and the center photo is the Thailand 'larger leaf' (thanks Roy for the use of your photos). I can't tell a lot of difference in the thickness but the shape of the small one is more round oblong and the larger is more bloated apple shaped.
