i picked this up sold as a bedder plant at ace hardware -- my first thought was "this is an underpriced houseplant!" :) excited to see the cultivation is similar to coleus, whom I have loved in the past. we have tons of sun in oklahoma city, though, with few trees for shade, so i am hoping it will be more sun tolerant than coleus.

Annie, It is righ next to the driveway so there is probably reflected light and heat. Not wanting to give mistaken info. I just went out to examine it carefully. At the moment it's practically buried under a heavily blooming Pretty Lady (also wonderfully shade tolerant) but still reaching out with fat buds and still clean as a whistle. When I planted it in such an unlikely location I actually expected it to die--two roses before it failed to grow or bloom much at all in the same place. It was my last ditch effort for that spot. Are you talking about Lady in Red Salvia - feel the stem - is it 4 sided???? - all salvias are 4 sided....... Lynne

Saw a number of these in a local Nursery staffed by people with Learning Difficulties. I shop there as much as possible as it's a charity so thought I'd give this oddity a go. I live in Kent, garden is mostly chalky/clay, and lots of tree-shade. So I've put the Lady up against a part-sun fence with some wire supports and she's made about 3 inches growth in 10 days and some new shoots from the base. Will let you know how she fares!
