Hi from a newbie junkie!

Hi y'all. I just wanted to introduce myself as I have been getting to know you all and your gardens by reading through all the old threads.

I was bitten hard by the hosta bug last year. I think I got 7 or 8 varieties last year and have gotten 5 already this year. I just got my first "giant". Yippee!!!!! Insert nerdy happy dance here..... :)

And to my bank accounts detriment, there is probably another hundred on my want list.

I have a small town sized lot in rural western Tennessee, and have three huge willow oaks. Perfect woodland, shady situation for my addiction.

I look forward to getting to know you all, learning from you all, and sharing my newbie garden. Hopefully I will share pics soon too.

Well thank you for the welcome. Time is running short now for the season. Frost is expected here tonight but it may not happen. Dahlias still have many buds and if it could wait a few weeks the season will be just a bit longer. Will be going to Florida in the beginning of November so really need the frost to happen 2nd week of October. Need time to prep the tubers for storage. Good day to ya, Sue

Welcome Sweetkountry; I am in the Dayton area and I agree, it is too hot and dry to do anything right now. My husband says "welcome to winter in summer." I want to second what Bakemom said. Wintersowing is a greatway to get plants for next year. I tried it with great sucess. Almost too much sucess, as many seedlings did not get planted due to the volume. If you are in the Dayton or Cincinnati area there are a lot of great gardens to visit and get ideas. Our area does have some issues that other parts of Ohio do not. Our soil is extremely alkaline and some plants do not tolerate it well. not to mention the water from your faucet has a high lime content. Go to your local nursery and see if they have any lists you can go off of for your area. I have been volunteering for both an organization that sells native Ohio wildflowers and with a local butterfly house. Off the top of my head some great plants for cottage, butterfly, and scent are; 1. Any of the Echinaceas, color, easy, butterflies 2. Phlox, extremely scented. Pick a variety that is mildew resisitant. Some butterfly appeal. 3. Agastache, color, butterflys, scented leaves, can be a bit invasive depending on the hybrid 4.Zinnias The things the butterflies seem to go for the most. Annul but great wintersowing flower. Remember if you want butterflies, you need to limit or eliminate pesticides. Host plants for the catepillars are helpful as well. My hubby and I were trying to eliminate this vine in our yard till we realized it was honeyvine milkweed and a favorite of Monarchs. Guess what! Last night I found my first monarch catepillar on one. What fun. There is a great butterfly forum on Gardenweb that will tell you anything you want to know about BFs. Goodluck!

Thanks very much folks! I know I'll be up against Japanese beetles and BS down here in New Orleans, but the 5-for-$30 sale is the perfect way to try a few at random and see if I can make it work. It's super late for bare roots here (already low-mid 80s) so I'm going to throw them in pots and keep them in the shade/otherwise babied until they get nice and settled - if I lose a couple I'm that much wiser and only out $6!

jeccalou -- if you have been reading you will have already discovered that this forum is well supplied with people who are knowledgeable and generous and talented and funny (and some are even quirky!) I have learned a LOT about hostas since I started lurking last November. Any question you care to post will be amply answered. You will be entertained and educated. Welcome, and enjoy.

Welcome to the hosta forum.

There is a hosta happening from June 13-16, 2012 in Nashville - the national convention. Many of the events are attendees only (anyone can pay and attend), but there are also some open to the public sign up events -

Hosta Show (leaf show)

Nashville is about as close as I can imagine for a national convention, except for Birmingham....which would be perfect.

Is anyone planning to attend Nashville? And will someone who goes PLEASE promise to take pictures of the vertical hosta gardening they say is featured at the Holland tour garden? Or I hope it was the one I read about.

How fortunate you are to have it so close to you! If you decide to go, put your GardenWeb screen name on the name tag so other GWebbers from the Hosta Forum might recognize you and say HI.

Thanks for the warm welcome y'all!

Paul, its funny, in an obsessive reading frenzy, I had already seen and had had my eye on that convention. Unfortunately, I think it may be a bit out of my budget this year. On top of the registration fee I am about two to three hours from Nashville. Gas prices are brutal. Maybe next year!

I hope to get some pics for you all soon.

I was gifted by my darling MIL an orange marmalade yesterday.
:)!
Man it really brightens up the dark corner of the garden. I did the hoata happy dance all afternoon.
