Thanks everyone! I think I like it a lot? It's different and "unique" it adds its own something special to my hosta garden for sure! I wasn't sure I would like it so I debated on it for a few minutes but $5 was too good a deal to pass up just because of some barely noticeable frost damage! I relocated it into Luna Moth's old pot. It's bigger. I ordered Cherry Berry today, so I'll need the smaller one I had it in for her. The pot it's in now should (hopefully) last a couple of years? I put it in front because it says it's more sun tolerant. If that's wrong, I can always move it later but for now, it's good.

Yes, I think you are feeling a bit melancholy...First, there is a great deal of pleasure in simply growing daylilies from seed. Each flower that blooms is remarkable because no one has ever seen it before. Some will be better than others, of course. But those 1 in 1000 are the spectacular $100-$300 daylilies....and you begin to see why they command those prices. That's not to say that you can't grow any number of delightful daylilies from seed. Many people choose not to register their daylilies for any number of reasons, but that doesn't lessen their enjoyment. If you were planning to grow them to make lots of money, then I might suggest you think carefully about that. It's hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it and there would be no expensive ones, right? Second, many people buy seeds (and grow the seedlings) to add those expensive genetics in a less expensive way. For instance, you could buy a cross of two recent introductions for (guessing, it all depends) between $10-$30. Depending on the seller, you could receive 5-20 seeds. If you bought those two intros, they might not bloom the first year at a time when you could use them and you'd be out $200-$600 (depending on the intros). In approximately two years, you'll probably see some very pretty flowers from those seeds. Will they themselves be worth the same prices as the original intros? Who knows! Probably not because even if you produced the next Stout winner, who will know? Do you belong to a local club and can exhibit it? Those national reputations of some of the big sellers didn't happen overnight. You can talk to some regional hybridizers producing wonderful flowers and learn how hard it is to get your flower the attention you think it deserves. So, I guess what I'm winding my way back to is...why are your growing your seeds?? If they're for your pleasure and for the thrill of the surprise, you'll get a lot of that. This was my first year to have seedlings bloom. It is true, just as a hybridizer once told me in an email, that you'll run right past your fancy new ones blooming to see your seedlings! Besides, who doesn't like growing things when you can't be outside? When the weather is harsh, it's fun to check on your seedlings. I check on mine several times a day (crazy, I know), but I like fussing with them...and I have more time than during gardening season to do just that. Unfortunately, the rain seems to be bypassing us except for a spitting rain right now. And I NEEDED that rain to soften the soil for the addition of the hosta strip to the garden! So, I may have to run the hose on the "soaker" setting for a while Sunday to soften the soil. Then I can plant the hostas I saved in the garbage bags and wait for the 3 new ones to arrive to plant. The OUTRAGEOUS thing is, now the mgt. is toying with me again. They told me in that letter to have my "plantings" out from under the hosta tree, and so I did. I only left the annual salvia, as it will die soon anyway. Guess what???? The dead tree is still there, but I know the "landscapers" have been busy cutting down zillions of trees and large branches all over the complex. So I wonder, with good reason considering their spitefulness, if they wanted me to dig up my garden for no reason except to ruin it AND they won't remove the dead tree as I asked. I just ran into my downstairs next door neighbor, who has told me often how much she loves what I did with the Neighbor's Patch (she is one of the 2 "Neighbors"). She paid me a wonderful compliment just now---she is getting married next year and she wanted the name and color of my Easy Does It rose because she wants to use it in her bridal bouquet!!! I just informed her about the co-op manager's nasty spiteful behavior about the hosta garden, and she was truly appalled.

Bk I am so new to this I got some seeds from a nice lady on this site (Joan), ebay and my new H. Frances Williams. I havent planted them all yet. I have viewed the old post from bernd, ken and others in this forum about Hostas and seed planting and I think I am going to be overwhelmed. Luckily I am going to get two t8 grow light fixtures and my cousin has built me a shelf from pallets to put them on. I love doing this. My first set of seeds from ebay didn't do anything so I set them outside. Now I have two grocery store plastic food containers with about 11 seedlings in them. Not nearly enough for what I want in my back yard (and give to my sisters) but they are coming along. This is just so much fun to watch them grow. Cant wait to show pictures of my back yard in the next year or two.
