Billie Rae,

This is one species I would put in the potting mix you plan to grow it in. In my experience, macrophylla isn't the quickest to root, but this is the best time of year to take cuttings, so you have the best chance of cuttings rooting now. Your cuttings look healthy, and some time in water won't, by any means, hurt them.

Ok, I'll remove them from the water. The mother has been growing in reg soil with lots of perlite and has been doing great, so I'll make up a small batch for the cuttings to go in.

Do you think that I should cover the cuttings with a baggy once in soil to help keep them moist since you mentioned that this hoya takes a while to root?

Hi Billy Rae,

I have no experience w/ this particular Hoya. I did want to address rooting bare vines tho'. In my experience w/ other Hoyas, bare vines tend not to want to root (at least not in water). I learned this the hard way w/ Kerrii, which throws long, bare vines that take a while to leaf out, so I've learned to wait 'til they have a minimum of 1 new leaf on the vine before I cut it (& then I either water root it, or just pot up into the pot of its mother plant).

Unfortunately, the little leaves on macrophylla were more near the beginning of the vine, so I just cot the whole thing off.
I didn't want to try and untangle the mother to get one which is growing on one of those hoops and make a big mess, and I would have, lol.
I plan of putting them all in a small pot with soil tom and hope they root ok and the two bare ones will eventually grow leaves.

It's funny you mentioned kerrii. I tried to root a long bare vine (no leaves) and it just wouldn't root and then it eventually died.
I tried again another time, and this time, that one had a couple of leaves and it rooted like a charm!
Since it happened to you too, that makes me wonder why "NOT" having leaves makes a difference in root production.

Thanks for the information, I think I'll wait for leaves from now on before trying to root anymore cuttings.

I would suggest that without leaves, the plant cannot produce any sugars etc - no leaves = no chlorophyll = no energy to produce roots etc.

That makes sence and is likley the reason for non-rooting! Well, I hope that doesn't mean all hope is lost on the two bare stemmed cuttings. My fingers are crossed!

I too think Hills' explanation is right, seems both common sense & logical.

I'm sorry to say BillyR, those bare stems may not root (but currently I got one left over from my Kerrii too; I'd trimmed a long branch w/ a terminal leaf & a base leaf, this is the leftover section from the middle w/ no leaves).

I hope that won't be the case, BUT, if for some reason they ever do root, I have to wonder if they will leaf out from what's being said!
I might have to re-think un-tangling some of the mother to get at a piece of vine with leaves, something I really didn't want to do but, it doesn't sound like it's a sure thing with these bare cuttings.

greater tiger....did these vines ever root?

Unfortunately, none of the cuttings rooted, just rooted! But I did root another cutting right after that, this time with a nice thicker stem and two big leaves and it rooted fast!
