Hoya kerrii purchased w/THREE peduncles!

Hi all!

I love Hoyas and have only recently began seriously acquiring them. No, I don't have many. Just three so far. I have H. carnosa, H. carnosa varigata and H. kerrii.

I got kerrii on Friday. She has three peduncles! I have kerrii in a southwestern facing window which has a 24" overhang from the soffits. Is this good? I've read kerrii is a slow growing Hoya so am I going to have to wait a considerable amount of time for blooms? H. kerrii came from the propogator/grower directly. I washed her leaves off b/c she had residue from being watered in the greenhouse. She's in a 6" hanging pot and there's a lot of plant so hopefully she's slightly rootbound, but if these are cuttings from last summer maybe not.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If you have peduncles, you'll probably get blooms this spring. The position you've chosen is ok if it's not going to get any direct sun. SW is about as intense as you can get, so I would personally move it to an eastern location, where it could get a bit of early morning sun. If it gets any direct sun in a SW location, it will probably burn...

Once established, kerrii can be a fast grower. It doesn't grow fast year round, but in spring and summer, mine gets wild. The stiff stems are hard to train, so you end up with a plant that takes up a LOT of space. Mine occupies the whole top shelp of a 5' x 18" shelf in my GH and still manages to wander hither and dither.

I got a Hoya kerrii this winter and have been growing it in an unshaded Southern window. This Hoya can take very bright light but like Denise mentioned the heat and light in a West facing window can be a problem. Because the window you are using has an overhang it should be just fine but keep an eye on the plant to be sure it does not begin to look stressed.

Hi Haxuan & welcome, If you can go back & look for more, look for a vine that has at least 1 or 2 nodes on it (nodes sort of look like knuckles or joints). Nodes are where new leaves &/or branches will originate. 1 or 2 nodes are considered the bare minimum to get a Hoya cutting going, I've done it from one, but 2 would be better. This Hoya can root in water also, I've done this as well too. A bare vine CAN grow into a new plant provided it has at least a couple of nodes on it. (A bare vine w/ no nodes will never become a new plant.) Good luck w/ it & Happy Hoya Hunting!

Wow, that is a nice size! I am growing one I started from 3 cuttings in May and it doesn't have that many leaves! The things I have found out is to be careful not to overwater this one, and that they grow best in a sturdy stable pot with a trellis, instead of hanging baskets. And train them on the trellis before the stems get too old because they get hard to bend. I plan on getting another, probably like yours because mine is not the variegated one, and regardless of what I have heard, I want to try growing it in a hanging basket. Also, I briefly put mine in morning sun and it faded the leaves considerably.

I don't think so...at least not with artificial lights. If it were outdoors in direct burning sun, then maybe it could be a problem. Someone else may know, but I have never heard of too much of the kind of lighting you have being a problem with flowering. It is hard to pin down the cause, some of them were mentioned above, or from being too wet or too dry...you certainly don't want to let a plant with buds dry out too long. And sometimes it can happen when a plant is moved or if it is in a drafty spot..If your plant seems otherwise healthy, if the roots look good, and you don't think it is a problem with drafts, try changing your watering habits and see if that helps. I saw a lacunosa in Home Depot a few months ago, the soil was soaked, it was covered in mealy bugs, and looked generally UNhealthy - and it was blooming like crazy, so go figure! But if it is a new plant, or new to you and adjusting to your home, that might be it. This is an easy to bloom hoya, so if the plant is healthy and stays healthy, you will get plenty of flowers eventually. You might have to just give it time.
