Hoya Kerrii (?) Is there any chance for new growth?

I have three leaves that look like those of hoya kerrii, i.e. heart-shape. I picked up a what-might-be-a-hoya thrown away from an orchid vendor along one street here in Saigon. Stupid me, I just stripped off the leaves from their vine ! I started the leaves in a mix of coconut coir, pelite and vermiculite and they have rooted vigorously as I can see their roots sticking out from the bottom of the pot. Now, I read from the forum that although the leaves root they won't start new growth! Is there any chance for me?

There is a REMOTE chance, yes, but only if you got a little of the vine with it. I've never understood why the leaves will ROOT by not produce growth. It's weird, but true. Did you also save the vine? If not, hold on to your rooted leaves so when you do get a whole plant (or cutting to root), you'll have some "pot filler." When I accidentally break off a leaf, I always stick it in the pot to root to create a "soil cover."

I just found a photo of someone heres Kerrii leaf. (Think her name was Lynda) Took 3 years to get a stem to grow.... so be patient, It might grow!

The easiest way to post photos from Flickr is to click the Share button. Then copy the html code and paste it into your message where you want the photo to appear. When you preview your post you will be able to see the photo. Hoya kerrii likes a lot of light. The regular green form can take full sun but it will probably look best if given a little shade during the afternoon. I think the problem with your plant is likely too little sun and too much moisture and fertilizer. This is a really tough Hoya and it also is designed to tolerate a fairly long dry season where it grows in nature. Giving the plant too much water in the winter is not a good idea. You should allow the plant to dry out completely while still giving it bright light. During the winter while the plant is being kept quite dry you can also withhold fertilizer as the plant should be encouraged not to grow. Of course if the plant seems to really want to grow then of course allow it but be sure to provide enough light. Growing this one too shady will cause soft growth that is not typical and this growth will be more susceptible to pests. How big a pot is your plant in and how long does the potting media stay moist after you water? It is also possible that you are seeing the effects of a root system that is stressed from remaining moist for too long. Of course after saying that, Hoyas sometimes develop strange leaves. If the rest of the growth develops as normal then I would simply remove the deformed leaf once the new growth is well underway. I've heard it's POSSIBLE to get plants from rooted Hoya leaves, but I've never had it happen. I've rooted plenty of leaves, too. I think the deciding factor is whether you get some of the main stem with the leaf cutting. If not, your chances are nil, I believe. If a little of the stem comes with the leaf, I think the chances are greater. So my opinion has always been... set the leaf in with the rest of the plant and let it root, because they almost always WILL root. If it does nothing but sit there as a rooted leaf, nothing lost, nothing gained. If it grows, halleluja!! But don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed... Denise in Omaha

Hi Ian, Had you ever changed the earlier mix? That may have been a problem there too. It certainly looks much better, great save. Pardon me, but why would you want to cut this stem? Especially since Pepe says he can see a peduncle on its tip (which I can't see from here). Wouldn't you want to give that a chance to bloom? I know I would. I have found these long, crazy Kerrii stems are pliable when young & can be lightly curled, say around a trellis or wire hoop. Tho' that may cause it to bleed white sap, looks like Elmer's glue. A spray of water will stop the white sap from leaking out further.

Thank you very much for your info. Guess the only thing I can do now is ... wait. Sigh... if only I had read this forum before.
Or maybe I should go back to the vendor's place and ... look for another cast-away vine? In case, say, I find one without any leaves, will it root and grow?

Hi Haxuan & welcome,

If you can go back & look for more, look for a vine that has at least 1 or 2 nodes on it (nodes sort of look like knuckles or joints). Nodes are where new leaves &/or branches will originate.

1 or 2 nodes are considered the bare minimum to get a Hoya cutting going, I've done it from one, but 2 would be better.

This Hoya can root in water also, I've done this as well too. A bare vine CAN grow into a new plant provided it has at least a couple of nodes on it. (A bare vine w/ no nodes will never become a new plant.) Good luck w/ it &

I'm ready for a Hoya Hunt this afternoon! So exciting because I don't know if the high-landers are back in town today or not.
Would someone like to share if I could find the treasure? Just kidding... you're so far away !!!
Meanwhile, as you suggested, I have put aside my rooted leaves for use as fillers later on.

Haxuan, By stripping the leaves, did you just pull them off the vine? If so it may be possible you tore away a bit of stem tissue..... I've rooted MANY leaves and have had two or three actually sprout a vine.
From what some of the experts think, a bit of stem tissue is needed to produce a vine.
