Help! How do I plant my 'baby'?

I was cleaning up my Daylily beds today and was very surprised to discover what looked like a fan growing out of the area where a flower had been! There does seem to be a couple of very small, developing roots as well, going into the dried up scape and it's still a little green in there -- although a lot of good that does me since of course I didn't notice the fan until I pulled it out of the ground. How do I get this to continue to grow? I've never seen them reproduce this way before. Does it occur often? Any help is most appreciated. MacThayer

Hi MacThayer: The growth you discovered is called a Proliferation and is not uncommon on daylilies. This is another way in which they multiply. I have picked about 50 of them off my plants this year. You can plant it directly in the ground and keep it moist, or you can place it in water just up to the root or crown of the Prolifeation and let the roots continue to grow until they are around 1 inch long and then plant it in the ground. It is a bit late to plant prolifs. out at this time of they year as they may not mature enough to make it through the winter. I will be keeping mine indoors for the winter and planting them out next spring after last frost. Proliferations are identical to the mother plant. I think you need to lay your bulbs out on paper for awhile and let them dry, or they may rot in the basket. Let the tops die and fall away, etc. THEN put them into mesh bags (like onions come in) or nylon stockings and keep them in a cool place for the summer. (Your closet, maybe?) Replant them in the fall. If your beds aren't ready by then, pot them up, or share them with friends. Maybe your friends will give you babies when you're ready for them. The bulbs will die if they stay out of the ground much longer than that. I'd pot them, though. You can pack alot of bulbs into a big pot. You can plant them side by side, almost touching. Potting them up would get you through to the next spring.

well pretty much there isn't anything we can do to protect against what nature throws at us, fruit farmers here net whole orchards but hail puts paid to the netting, all we can realy do is replant afer the damage some will grow back. if it was regular wind only then you could plant some windbreaks to help control it. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

so, what's the answer? cause i bought my spider plant, already growing, about 3 years ago (give or take) and ive never seen a baby . h**l ive never even had a full bushy plant despite; the south facing window, soaking and drying completely for water (twice a month ill say), i feed liquid fish fertilizer (2-3-0) and replace the potassium with bimonthly banana peels (i prefer organics for plants) . its hanging in a basket .. i changed the soil this summer so i know the tube roots are thriving (actually wasnt prepared for them and scared the begeebys out myself hahaha) . my only thought upon reading above posts ; could i have repotted too soon and didn't let the roots get hugged? cause i assumed like most other plants if you give more space for roots, the more intricate the roots become, the stronger the plant .. is that wrong? helpp !! i want plant babies !

Hi Amany, I concur with m3rmald, unless you are trying to get the plant to bloom at a certain date, stop disbudding. Who told you to disbud in the first place? I disbud not only for show but also to get the plant to put all its strength into growing a larger plant. One other reason to disbud would be because the plant is infected with thrips. Gee,Virgo, Yours are doing great.I found two on my DL's.One on Strawberry Candy and one on Buttered Popcorn.I planted each of them in a little 4 inch pot and keep ing them damp,but the leaves turned brown on both of them,and I am hoping my Strawberry Candy one will grow and make a plant.I love this DL and my onle little plant was new this spring and only had one scape and blooms,so I really wanted this one to grow.It is not looking that great right now,but I hope it makes it.
