Are your Hoyas growing yet?

Mine are! At least some of them. My kentiana is covered with lots of new growth. Compacta has some growth also. Lacunosa is just starting to show some signs of wanting to grow. Krimson Queen has one new sprig with two sets of new leaves on it but nothing else. Tsangii-DS70 lags behind everyone else with no sign of growth. It looks very healthy but probably doesn't get quite as much sun as everyone else. Hows yours doing?

My Anulata is growing pretty fast and it's actually been in full sun all winter (like you said in your other post, it works for some of us). My Calycina just started showing some new growth, and my Pubicalyx 'Red Buttons' has also shown some growth. That's really about it (out of 13). Well, my 2 Krimson Queens have shown a couple of new leaves here and there...but they seem to always have a new leaf growing at some point regardless of season. No blooms though...still patiently waiting. I'll be posting lots of pics when I get them!

I've got a small sprig of Tsangii/DS-70 that's never stopped, been putting on bits of new growth all winter. My 3 Kerriis never stopped growing. My new Nicholsoniae from FLA bought in Sept. never stopped either, each of 2 is throwing a long, bare stem. Infernallly slow growing Carnosa made it's 1st leaf (pink) in the longest time!! An older Pubicalyx type that I'd been sold as Nicholsoniae cinnamomifolia, made pair of new leaves (burgundy & a new long, bare burgundy stem. It hasn't shown its burgundy growth in abt 5-6 yrs. since I first got it). My Lacunosas are waking up, not much else is so far.

Diane I do not cut my vines because leaves eventually grow at each node of the vine. In my case I haven't had a vine "yet" that hasn't grown any leaves. Recently I had a vine grow and only one leaf at a node grew but then later the other leaf popped out (opposite side but same node, different timing). To me hoyas are such slow growers anyway I don't want to cut anything on them to slow down the growing process even more!! Unless of course your vine dies for some reason, then of course I'd cut it back. I have only been growing hoyas for about a year though. I usually just wrap the vines around whatever support or macrame hanger I have it in once the vines long enough to do so. I also use Eleanor's VF-11 everytime I water and I also put (the water and eleanors that I mixed up to water my plants with) into a spray bottle and I try to mist my plants with that every morning but I ran out of time this morning and yesterday. I read somewhere it was better to mist them in the morning than in the evening so that's what I try to do. Third Question: If your hindu rope looks good I wouldn't change a thing. "if it aint broke, don't fix it" (I agree with Gabi) Everyone's growing conditions are different, some specific things work for everyone regardless of growing conditions and some just depend on your individual situation. Kim, whatever excuse you can use to kick a habit, but this has to be the best one I've heard so far! I'm on a diet - I have a hip that's been hurting me for longer than I care to admit, and it's getting harder and harder to stand for long and water, and especially go up and down my little step stool to water plants on the uppermost shelves in my GH. Maybe this could be even more motivation to stick with it... "If I don't get the weight off to improve my hip, I'll have to get rid of all plants above this shelf." I'm not a big fan of eBay, so Ric is the only one I buy from on there. Gardino's always has outstanding plants - the shipping is a bit pricey, but they're well grown, well established plants and worth the extra for sheer size. I hope to sell some starter plants this spring, but it's been a rough winter for me physically, so it may be a couple months before I can get my...um, stuff together... Others here sell as well. Hoyas, hoyas everywhere! These hang in the window where I work. This is a West-facing window. Two different pubicalyx, one wayetii and a good old carnosa. There is also a Chelsea on the little shelf behind my monitor. These are on a shelf in another West-facing window. A shepherdii (hanging), australis, and kerii. There are more lower but this picture doesn't show them. Hanging in my west-facing sliding door area on a bird cage stand are krinkle 8, multiflora, bella (not doing so great) and krimson princess. A few of the grow-light hoyas: another chelsea, wayetii and a nummarloides in the background. These are just some of mine.

All my cuttings are growing apart from the pentaphlebia, the australis is going crazy and has produced two twirling vines, the publicalyx is growing buds (YAY!) as well as suspected buds on the heuschkeliana, weebella/dickinsonia. Even the poor mistreated imperialis has got a new leaf growing. And the polyneura which kept losing leaves all winter has a new growth too. Go beer fertilizer!

Some of my others are sulking, however. One of my DS-70 cuttings is rooted but seems to be wilting (?), the Lacunosa "Tove" cuttings grew and then died back a bit, the Bella cuttings I got the other day are looking a bit sad. I hope they'll recover....

Many are growing like gangbusters! Two different australis are putting on new growth, all the carnosas, curtisii and fungii. Incurvula is growing like mad and has at least 3 blooms forming. Tsangii (DS-70) has plugged away all winter, continuing to bloom. Lacunosa is covered with blooms in varying degrees of development. A lot of my small cuttings I got last summer & fall are sprouting new growth: 'Iris Marie', 'Mathilde', 'Minibelle', nummularoides. Pubicalyx 'Splash' has one bloom open and 2 more almost fully developed - love the fragrance of that one best! Wayetii (or kentiana) is growing like crazy, polyneura, picta and serpens all have new growth. Kerrii (green and reverse variegated) and obovata have what I call new "growth nubs" (a bump that's starting to divide into two leaves...) And even my painfully slow growing macrophylla looks like it's got a pair of new leaves forming. Spring has definitely sprung, even though you'd swear NOT by the weather!

My lacunosa is putting on another flower bud and starting to climb up the hanger...guess it is happy.

I am watching my little baby serpens like a hawk...the coloration started to peter out a bit, but this morning it looks much better.

The two carnosa varieties 'Krimson Queen' and 'Krimson Princess' are just sitting there, though...

What type of light do they appreciate?

Hi,

I have a Krimson Queen & princess planted in the same pot. It sits in a hanging basket with a south window on one side and a west on the other. I think they can take lots of light. But I dont have it directly in front of the windows. They are both putting out a few new leaves now. I have a Kentiana that has about 6 new leaves coming out, and a Pubicalyx that's crawling up its trellis quickly. I'm fairly new to Hoyas and cant wait to collect as many as I can fit in my sunny windows! They seem to like me : )

I noticed today, my lacunosas are really kicking into gear. Little nubs all over em. I love spring! My kentiana has a number of new vines 4-6 inches long reaching out. KQ and tsangii are getting ready to go I think.

I've been noticing for several weeks that I'm getting new growth. I can't name names since I have a bunch of NOIDs. Like Gabi and some others I'm still waiting for my first bloom. I have great hopes for this summer!

I just inspected my carnosas more closely....they do have nubs! Guess they are getting ready to kick it into high gear!
