New hoya purchases!! (lots of pics)

Even though I'm getting about 12 or 13 cuttings from David Liddle, that wasn't enough!!

I wanted to share a whole bunch of pics of my new babies that were at my doorstep today. They ALL have peduncles and some are even blooming/budding!

Gabi, what healthy looking plants... and with flowers and peduncles to boot. Lucky, lucky you. A question where do you get those little clips from? I've never seen them around here (Canada). Is there a place where I can order them from?

Hello everyone! Thanks for the link, Ming. How's it going in Arizona for you? Things are ok so far in TX, although grad school's been a bit rough. Hanging in there, though... pirate girl...I am wanting to say Karen, is that right? Nice to hear from you! I've not been online much for a good month with traveling home for the holidays and such. Glad to hear the cutting is doing well. My davidcummingi is blooming right now. The link shows all the new ones so far, the addresses show some better pics of some of the plants. I've got a couple cuttings on order that will be shipped when they are ready. The imperialis was received through a trade with a fellow GWber, it has been doing wonderfully since I got it in the fall. I think the aroid you are referring to is not around anymore, I need to go through my pics someday and update. Many things did not survive my moving. However, the hoyas have loved the move. Right now I'm just keeping the cacti and succulent things mainly in the GH, I had some hoyas in there until before the ice storm in Dec. Now that the ground is so dry here, I am afraid to run my little electric heater so everything is in the house for now. Not that my setup isn't safe, I take every precaution I can think of, but it only takes a spark right now. We're I think 8 inches below normal for rainfall. Well, thanks for keeping in touch everyone! I was lucky enough to receive a new laptop for Christmas so hopefully I will be able to browse at home and be a little more active here. :) Kim

Mike, All the plants did not come with names, I just knew some already before I bought them.The ones I new were H. aarchboldiane,H.cumingiana,and H.obovate. I know the photos are not very good but I took them as soon as I got off the plane and ripped them out of their box. Sandy, This is how it all works. Every wed and Thur there is an out door plant market in Bangkok with about 1000 plant venders to chose from. You never know what might be at each vender from one week to the next. Unfortunately, not a lot of venders showed up this time of year with hoyas. 1. go early in the morning to find hoys and buy 2. find a shady area to spend an hour cleaning the roots off 3. take taxi to permit office. 4. get them inspected and boxed 5. wait for official documents takes about 2 hours. 6. take boyx of hoyas back to hotel. 7. fax my permits plus Thai permits back to canadian health and food inspection, and ask for permission to bring in my box of hoya plants. 8. wait for our government to fax me back for permission 9. take box of plants with me to airport when i go home, check them in as checked luggage take the box with my copy of papers to the inspection at the airport and sshow them all my paperwork, i have never had the inspector open my box in the 3 times i have done this. get home, open box replant. Everything this time ran very smoothly, I guess third time lucky. The hardest thing this time was the heat. It was 40 degrees with95 percent humidity. Cindy

I lost them from neglect. I got sick and couldn't take care of them. My neighbor also cut his tree down durring that time and my plants toasted.....I was getting constant panic attacks. Even laughing would trigger one. Since then I've learned to deal and not panic :) I'm remarried and this hubby likes plants. When I can't tend to my plants he will. I have a great support system now ❤

@kellyknits Thanks, I've noticed that chlorantha isn't too picky, but does like to abort its flowers if you let it get a little too dry while the buds are forming. Other than that, keeping it in bright light seems to guarantee lots of flowers. I'm glad to hear that yours is doing well too. @mitzicos Wow those look pretty rough, I'm not sure if they're still alive from those pictures, but if they are, keep them humid and warm and they should eventually start forming roots. Older stems are often yellowish grey and it can be difficult to tell if they're alive. DId you cut the lower end off? If you did, was the inside green, and did it bleed latex? If it did then they're in good condition. You can shove those leaves that have fallen off into the pots as well, they'll form roots, but might take a while to form a vine, if they do at all. The cuttings you received today look okay, not great but they look like they'll make it for the most part. Mine looked much worse and were mostly bare stems but they all pulled through. @Josh Thanks, I bought some adenium seed off ebay after I'd read all the stories about growing these over on the cacti forums. They're a lot easier to grow than I thought they'd be, even though I did have to invest in a light to provide enough light. As for the Jade, I've always liked Jades quite a bit, but it's hard to grow them here without supplemental light. They always turn out leggy and gross and not at all tree-like. There's small Hummel's sunset jade hiding to the right of the Gollum too, I started it from a couple cuttings I took from my other plant when I moved out. The lights seem bright enough to make the leaves flush red, so I'm hoping for a treat once it gets bigger. @Mike You can get mylar at dollar stores, but you won't find it under "mylar". Thye actually sell it as "Emergency heat blanket" for camping and for keeping in your car glove box. It's a lot thinner and reflects less light than the 1-2mm thick mylar sheeting you can buy from hydroponic stores, but at $1 a sheet, it's a bargain. The H. chlorantha was imported from Thailand, as were all of my hoyas. There's a web store called "Aleya garden" with an ever expanding selection of Hoyas. Now probably isn't the best season to order anything, but if you wait for a few more months you should be able to get lots of new Hoyas. I don't bring my plants outdoors anymore since I now grow under lights only, although I used to bring my Jades and succulents outdoors. For those plants, acclimatization was mostly just setting them out in the shade and then moving them to brighter and more direct sunlight every week or two. The shelving is just a standard wire shelf unit, you can find them at storage shops. I got mine at a store called "Storage solutions" but I think that's only in Canada. The dimensions of the shelf are 48x18", which is just enough to fit my grow light in.

Nice haul, Gabi! Are you going to have to start renting window space in neighboring apartments to "store" your hoyas?!?! How exciting - I'd be beside myself! I, too, am having a heck of a time "pacing" myself while await the DL cuttings!

Annette, those clips came with the hoyas (the hoyas came just like they are in the pictures...pot, soil, trellis, and clips). However, I have bought those clips many times before - you can find them in a local garden center or on an online garden center.

Imadigger, I also got one of my subcalvas from Logee's - as you can see, I'm quite obsessed with subcalva! I have one from David Liddle also, and now I have this awesome cross. Since both australis and subcalva smell wonderful, I can't wait to see what the mixture smells like. I'm sure you saw the pic of Sara's blooms (of australis X subcalva) on DG.

Jo, you'll love the kenejiana. Now I'm ready to get the red flowering one!!

Kelly, believe it or not, I was actually able to find space for those hoyas! I have tons of window space (my whole east wall is just wall-to-wall windows), but since I don't live alone I can't take over all the window space! Can you believe I have all that UNUSED window space?? What a tragedy.

Xuan,I would switch places with you anyday! To be able to collect hoyas in the wild is just amazing!

You must be in heaven with all your new plants, I ordered some new ones too and I can't keep from staring at them everytime I walk by. Congrats!! They are all GREAT, you got them with peduncles and some with buds and even in Bloom. (I am green with envy too) but of course estatic for you.

Can you let us know where you got them? I would like to get some from the same place, the quality of plants are amazing and obivously well established. I too am not completely familiar with all of your new hoyas but am now!!!!

Last night I walked into my bedroom and was struck with an amazing scent. It was H. acuta (from above) opening up, and it smells AMAZING! Here are some pics I snapped last night of the flowers opening up:

Gabi you've got me drooling all over my keyboard, never mind the fragrance, that is a real beauty. Do you know which acuta it is? I see D.L. has seven on his list, I'm already starting another want list, I am so hooked LOL.

Thanks Annette. Not sure which IML this is - I didn't get it from DL. I know there are a bunch of different H. acuta varieties though. I just took a look at my 2007 catalog, and if I had to guess I would say that it's either IML 0079 or IML 0146. Either way, I think you'd be happy with either one!

The corollas will actually become more reflexed, by the way (the ones I took were when they just started opening). I'll take another pic when they are fully open.

Hey Gabi I just wanted to commend you on your close-up shot of the acuta flower! GREAT JOB! Also I'm sure you know there are other people out there who have plant fever, I too am one of them. I also have quite a bit I'm expecting from David and plus I have 2 that I'm expecting any day plus I have a couple bids going right now. It's a bug, it really is! :)

Hi Linda, alot of times the big box stores will carry decent sized plants to start off with. You can find them in places like Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart. Than you have your local greenhouses and florist. Good Luck!

Hey there Kelly! I actually had an order that was on hold from Logee's, than couldn't help myself and got a couple of plants from Asiatica and then recently found a couple more plants on eBay. Now with all of us having wishful positive thinking, lets hope our hoyas all make it through customs like lightning!
