Opinions on yellows/golds/chartreuse ?

Hello all....

The thaw is on here in MN (as I'm sure you've seen in the news about Fargo/Moorehead).

The first inch or so of ground is thawed and now I'm getting itchey....not to plant, but to order anyway. I have

My garden is notice-able weak in yellows. I really love the pic of Sea Fire in Grenfeld's Encyclopedia.

Other fav's of mine are Orange Marmalade and On Stage (early in the season).

Got any recommendations for yellows that remain yellow or turn yellow later in the season? My garden is fairly deep shade and I know that yellows tend to like sun, but if you have any that hold color and are good growers, I'd love to know about 'em! I'd love to see pics too!

Here's what I have on my wishlist, of course, it can always be expanded. What are you opinions of these?:

Sea Fire

Sunny Disposition

English Sunrise

Rising Sun

BTW: I remember last year at the MN Arboretum, I saw a corrugated giant yellow/chartreuse leaf. Any idea what it might have been? I need to dig out the pic.

I can definitely recommend Golden Sculpture and High Noon for solid yellows that keep their color. Krugerrand, Rosedale Golden Goose, Golden Friendship, King Tut, Midas Touch and Sum and Substance have also done very well for me. Take a look at Squash Casserole, Jimmy Crack Corn, Dancing Queen, Choo Choo Train, Blaze of Glory. These all keep a yellow or chartreuse color. Lime Piecrust is a good chartreuse color, but gets a little more of a brassy yellow with a little sun. I'm hoping to add Sutter's Mill this year.

Personally, I like Midas Touch and Aspen Gold better than Zounds. I also have Faith, which I'm not sure if I like that well.

If you want a really bright hosta in early spring, Sea Fire is a sure bet. I don't think there's a large hosta that is brighter than Sea Fire in the spring.

Another bright hosta is Zitronfalter. Check it out. It's growing on Van Wade's hillside when you drive in, if you're ever there.

Orange Marmalade is somewhat of a slow grower for me. Orange Crush is similar, but more orange than Orange Marmalade.

A few others to consider are Rainforest Sunrise (an excellent small puckered hosta), Moon Lily, May (all-gold sport of June), Maui Buttercups, and Dawn's Early Light (nice in spring, but tends to get more green as the season progresses).

My Jimmy Crack Corn and Maya Swingtime are still yellow at the end of the summer, but were small when I got them at the end of August 2005. I'm still waiting for them to impress. They aren't expanding as much as other similar sized plants purchased at the same time. Both Gold Standard and Pineapple Upside Down Cake bleach out by late August or early September. They get the same partial sunlight as Sun Power and Stained Glass. Both S.P. & S.G. look very yellow well into the fall. I think Stained Glass is even more of a buttery yellow, and being a fragrant variety seems to like a decent amount of midday sun. But Stained Glass takes a while to yellow up, at least in my garden. Restrained Gold on exterior--Opinions, please!

Thank you to all of you who gave me input on using restrained gold on the exterior of our home when I posted the question a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, DH wasn't crazy about doing anything in gold tones once we really started playing with the idea and buying samples. So I found a new inspiration photo in a Cottage Living back issue and have been trying very hard to match the color scheme in this house in the photo! I would love anyone's opinion on the following combination (or photoshop workup if anyone has time). As always, suggestions for alternate color schemes are welcome too! I'm definitely suffering from analysis paralysis right now! So here's what I've come up with (all these are Sherwin Williams colors) The bulk of the house body would be in Perfect Greige, the trim in Pacer White, and the accents on the gables would be Riverway. This house is on a lake so I was trying to go with a bungalow/lake house feel to the color scheme. I've painted some scrap siding (we're using Hardiplank) with these colors and I *think* I like them but I'm horrible at imagining them on an entire house! HELP!! (and THANKS!!) :)

Thanks ya'll! I love the idea of using the wool throws and pillows in the cooler months! And Toile has always been a favorite of mine too! In fact a toile pillow would be a great idea for my chair that's across the room to bring in some of that color. May take a look at Etsy since I don't sew. Thanks for your ideas!

Yellow gold or white gold?

Go with what you like. But know that so called "white gold" takes a bit of maintenance. That is what I have and every couple of years I take it in to the jeweler and leave it for a week to be re-plated. It's plated with rhodium, which becomes dull - wears off? - over time. Were I to choose again, I would go with platinum or yellow gold. Edited to mention the cost - I don't remember exactly but it is at least $100, maybe closer to $150 to be re-plated.

I'll throw in my two cents worth: Maui Buttercups and Fire Island are at the top of my yellow favorites...

i wouldnt waste money on zounds ...

the reason there is a pic of it in that book .. its because its probably the only one the photographer ever saw that thrived ...

we covered this plant before.. 2 or 3 peeps will chime in and say it grows like a weed .... and 50 will agree its a dog ... lol ..

best advice ... turn off the computer this summer ... join the local hosta club .. and make sure you attend their annual garden walks .. and see what grows best in your area ...

i know it doesnt help you BUY SOMETHING RIGHT NOW .... but it is the best way to make lists for the future ...

Praire Fire and Rich Uncle are "long season" yellow hosta for me. Even if they wern't yellow I would hate to be w/o. The plant at the arboretum, is ringing a bell as August Moon. In the shade it will be more chartruese. An "oldie" but "goodie".

I assume many of the above pics I saw were later in season, so some probably started more green and brightened. Some are solid some are variegated.

- Sea Fire
Moved a Sun Power to more sun last fall. Paradigm is in midday sun which gets yellow center by August - I water it well. My Gold Standard gets yellow in bright shade.

Noboby mentioned Fried Bananas. It grows fast,stays golden to yellow all year,and has fragrant white flowers to boot! Phil

Gold standard does very well in the shade, an oldie but goodie. turns to almost parchment by mid summer, mine is in full shade and looks great!! (but doesnt look like anything at the moment) also Inniswood

Dawn's Early Light - bright yellow until mid summer then turns chartreuse for the rest of the season - a real winner of the 10 foot rule...

Opinions on yellows/golds/chartreuse ?
