I am SOOO confused!

Okay...I give up! Yesterday I needed a "pick me up" and headed for the hoyas in HD. Yes, it is an Exotic Angel plant but that's all that is available for me. I found one that was labeled Hoya "Bilobata", Hoya Carnosa. Yet, I looked on the Exotic Angel web site and it states that the Botanical Name of this is Hoya tsangii. I sure hope I'm making myself clear as all of this identifying is making me so confused when I label the plants. I'm getting to the point where I don't care about the name so much as whether I can get them to flower and then maybe I'll go back to "names"...sorry, just had to vent!

But sometimes that's how it is w/ Hoyas, esp. if one buys those by EA who are notorious for misnaming plants.

I go thru my local Indoor Gardening Society, sometimes find bit of Hoyas there for cheap, which are often not named (which I can often ID myself since they're not usually very rare ones), or swap w/ Hoya friends here at GW so they tend to come w/ names from fellow growers/ collectors.

Unfortunately, that IS the way of EA, I myself know this Hoya which they label Bilobata to be Tsangii (now known as DS-70). When I nicked my small piece of this from the Bklyn Bot. Garden (gift shop) a few seasons ago (yes, I know, BAD Karen), their pot had it labeled as H. Sulawesi.

So it's a crapshoot sometimes, as you get more familiar w/ these, you'll be able to tell better.

In the meantime, if you want to see an actual pix of Tsangii/DS-70, search on our photo gallery OR, go to post abt growing Hoyas Epiphytically, where I recently corrected a poster who had it labeled as something else.

Pirate Girl....Boy...did you ever get so frustrated you just start laughing??? The label on my EA says "I am known as Hoya "Bilobata" and then it says Hoya carnosa! A Couple of weeks ago I bought an EA with no tag and found out it was a hoya tsangii...so I guess I have two tsangii?? I promise you...if I EVER get these straight...I'm calling myself a "genius" and my hat is off to anyone who is able to tell which is which with these plants! BUT....there is one thing....I still NEED these plants no matter what their name is! I just think they are so pretty!

Not to change the subject but we're almost neighbors...I'm upstate in the Catskills! I use to live in "Da Bronx" quite a few years ago. There are days when I get soooo homesick for the City!

I know how you feel rozannadanna, except mine is the opposite, When the temps are 123F+ in the day and it is over 100F at night, I am never ready for that. I know my garden days are over until October. I have to stay inside just as some of you do during the snow, it is such torture. Now is our time to enjoy the roses, today 80F, tomorrrow 78F and all week in the high 70's. We will get some cold maybe 35F at night in Dec & Jan. but the days are very mild. During the summer I read everyone's posts on how much they are enjoying the weather and there roses and gardens while my roses are frying and look horrible. They are puny and it is so hot one can not go outside and do any work in the garden. All the roses get is water and lots of it. I am not sad at all that summer is over (Sorry, but I am so glad). I am cleaning up some of the dead canes and pulling weeds that I could not get to in our hot, hot summer, it feels so good to be out in the garden. Hi lovetogrowflowers. I don't think you are bothering anyone. Lucy is right, try not to stress yourself out. Take deep breaths. LOL. I think your plan for the two potted ones are perfect. I read in one of your earlier post asking about if the crawl space was ok and someone I believe said yes. For me, I WOULD strip the leaves first. The brug will be trying to take care of the leaves instead of useing its energy to go dormant. Plus you wouldn't want bugs to sneak in on a leaf and spend the winter eating your brug. :( As for the one in ground...well people cut back or don't cut back for different reasons. One of the biggest I think is for safety and the health of the plant. During the winter the brug branches will freeze so they cut them back so there is less of a chance this will happen. Who wants a mushy rotting brug in spring? How tall is the brug you still have in the ground? How close to the ground is the Y? The experts can chime in if this is a bad idea, but how about if you...1.Stip the leaves. 2.Cut off only the top green tips. (Save them) 3.Mulch as high as you can get it, at least to the Y if it's close to the ground. 4.Cover the brug with a REALY big rubber trash can or tub. 5.Maybe even cover that with an old blanket. Or would that be over kill? The cuttings you could take in and root them. Hopefully none of that was bad advice. Me and Lonny are newbies too. This will be our 2nt winter. We killed one of the two brugs we had last winter. But that was because we brought them in and tried to keep them growing. This year we brought all in again. This winter we have many more, plus young ones. We made a Brug room and have been learning lots. So we are going to give it a try. If they had been bigger, we would have left them out in ground to go dormant. I have had no problems and have had kindles for 2yrs now. That is how it works with kindles and it works just fine. No one but me has ever known my amazon password even before I got the fire and I change it every month. I change a lot of passwords monthly. If your kindle is lost or stolen you log in online and deregister it and let amazon know then no one can buy stuff on your account and it's bricked from someone else being able to register it. Much the same as if your cell phone is lost or stolen. Then if you get a new one you just register it to your account and all your books and apps are on Amazon for reloading onto the new device. I had to have my fire replaced by amazon due to a faulty charging port so this was very convienient for me. Same if you have the kindle reading app your pc or tablet or phone. Any books you buy are stored in your amazon account for reloading if you get a new tablet or pc. Nice thing is if hubby and son get kindles I can register them to my account and they can have access to all the games and apps I bought where as if they got their own accounts they would each have to buy those apps and books separately. Amazon offers one paid app free every day so I have a ton of apps and games I have collected that way like monopoly is $5 but they had it free one day. Also if you belong to amazon prime you not only get the free shipping deal but can borrow one free book a month from the kindle lending library. Just buy them and enjoy them. You'll get so you have gobs of Hoya sites bookmarked so you can try to ID them. What I do is put the closest name I can come up with until it blooms, which USUALLY makes it more definitive. I've got 3 tsangiis (DS-70s) myself! Two are EA plants - bought the first one, then found the 2nd one which looked just enough different (more oblong than roundish leaves) that I was convinced it was a hybrid. The 3rd is actually a small one I'd ordered and was en route to me just before I found the big first big one at HD, but since it's one of my favorites for it's ever-blooming habit, I'm ok with that.

Denise...Thanks exactly the attitude I've adopted. Even tho I get confused..no way am I gonna stop buying the plants! In all honesty..it doesn't matter what the name is...it's the flowers that count! Boy, your tsangii is beautiful! How long did you have to wait for it to flower? All I know is if I see the name "Hoya" on a tag on a plant when I'm shopping it just seems to know to jump into my shopping cart!

I probably didn't wait more than 6 months to get blooms on my tsangii. And the best part is I've never even seen a mealie any of my tsangiis. There are some Hoyas that are mealie magnets (like bella, which I don't grow anymore for that reason...) Not that I see a mealie very often any more... But every once in awhile... YIKES! I just HATE it when I find one of those buggers!
