Rita, of course I don't know what the 2009's look like that you ordered, but the ones you listed that are on his website are really, really nice! You really added some flair with those choices, and I can just imagine what the 2009's must look like! Your new bed you worked so hard on should be overflowing with beauty and blooms next year!! I have pictures of the 2009s in the newsletter but don't feel that I should post them because they are not on his website yet. Soon he will put them on the website so it will not be a long wait.

For anyone wanting Korth daylilies but put off by the prices, try HAWAIIAN DANCER for only $25.00 which reblooms lots for him there, should rebloom most places. One could always e-mail him for a picture.

I wish Phil had kept the pictures of the daylilies from the 2007 collection on the website even though they were sold out so people could see pictures of them. They are such stunners.

I was just walking around my garden between rain showers thinking in my mind about just were I should put these 18 new daylilies this spring.

I can't wait to see what the 2009 collection contains! I fell in love with almost all of the ones that you posted from your 2007 collection! I still can't quite talke myself into paying that much for a DL, but I am going to be checking for Grace Like Rain and Arnold's Daughter every year until I can afford them!

That's one of the things that I absolutely love about this forum... even if you have to wait a few years before you can enjoy some of the newer intros in your own garden, you still get the pleasure of seeing them bloom in other people's worlds. It is so wonderful to be able to see more than just the "one" hybridizer picture, and to get opinions on the performance as well.

I can't wait to see your pictures next year!!!!

Woops, I forgot to count the bonus plant so I will be getting 19 new Korth intros come spring. I did get a break on price as Phil told me that the price for TEARS FOR GUS was going from $175.00 to $125.00 and REGAN KATE from $125.00 to $100.00. This based on whats available for spring. I guess he will change the prices when his new intros go up.

Julie- Last year when I first got into daylilies I remember seeing ones listed for $100.00 and thinking you have got to be kidding, way to much to spend. I guess my point of view has changed. I still think many southern intros at very high amounts for single fans are way too much and its my choice not to spend that kind of money. But for someone hybridizing in zone 4, there is no way they can get the kind of rapid increase that would be needed for lower prices. In fact many of the intros from Phil Korth totally sell out, as you can see from looking on the website. Many of the 2007s are simply not there. UPON THIS ROCK and SHINING LIKE THE SUN are not there. All sold out.

I have my own business and work lots of hours. Fortunately, there are many times my hours are flexable so that I can get lots of gardening done. Because of business, I really can't be away. So I just spend my money on my garden. It is a very large check I am writing out to Phil Korth but I feel its worth every penny. I know I sure did enjoy those daylilies when they bloomed here this summer.

At this stage in life, I want what I want and I am just going to have it. No, I can't take a world tour or buy a million dollar house or some really fancy luxury car. But I can buy whatever I decide on for my garden and thats what is important to me.

I'll be checking for Korth's 2009 collection on his website. I definitely want to order Purify My Heart at some point and maybe some of his blue eyed ones.

I have to clarify about the $$ spent on daylilies. I am lucky enough to have as much room as I want to to plant, as long as I have the stamina to maintain the plantings and the ability to get water to my plants. That means that if I find room for one, I find room for quite a few. So then my dilemma is do I spend big $$ on one daylily, or the same amount on five? And because there are so many beautiful plants these days that are under $20, I go for quantity rather than the expensive ones as I really love SO MANY of them!!!

You are so lucky to be able to run your business from your home. I run my family business as well, so have the same constrictions about being away, but I also have to drive almost an hour each way. I would love to be able to take my few breaks in my garden rather than the lounge upstairs!!

My garden is my decompression, so I too buy what I want in the quantity I want... it's just that the really expensive ones are going to have to wait until I run out of room!!

I too and blessed to be able to buy for my garden whatever I really want. I work only weekends, but can work an extra shift if I wish.

We have reached the point in our lives where there is only the two of us at home, and we are debt free, so if I indulge my passion for daylilies, it is okay.

Beautiful daylilies he has...but unfortunately I live in Canada and can't get them here unless I go through the process of the phyto and awaiting the Canada/US customs delivery times...which can be rather long at times.

Since our kids are gone from home I rarely go to the mall, but love shopping at nurseries. So, I think my DH is also more concerned about the garden centers too. (Thank goodness for online purchasing!!)

We also run our own business and since I only have to go in once every two weeks to do the payroll for the business, how I spend my time here on the acreage is basically of my own choosing. Since my DH is busiest in the summer months with his business I know I will be able to spend all summer here on the acreage.

For me selling perennials I have divided from my yard at the Farmer's Market in turn pays for my new perennial purchases. I have also been choosing more expensive daylilies already. The most expensive choices this past summer being Forestlake Ragamuffin and Shores of Time. I just did my own crosses this summer and am anxious to see how they will turn out. Since I live in a Canadian zone 2b I want to see how the all the new purchases of daylilies will do here.

Brenda- Great news if you are really interested in those Korth daylilies. They are all available in Canada no phyto or border crossing necessary.

While you still look up all the info and see the pictures on the Pinewood Gardens website you buy them directly from the Canadian source.

kay- I already figgured out you were just like me in that you bought the daylilies that you wanted regardless of price. There were many times in my past that I could not have afforded to do what I am doing now and spend this kind of money. So I am very thankful for the good things in my life at this time.

I will be sixty two on my next birthday this spring. Afew years ago I looked at my future and could see that I could not retire at 62 or I would not be able to afford anything. Could not live on the available fixed income. So that would mean using savings and that would mean severe penny pinching. Of course I decided to continue working. Since I knew I planned to keep working until at least the social security retirement age of 67, I started doing all my expensive garden hardscape projects. The plan being to get them all done while there was plenty of income coming in just in case one had to retire. Plus I wanted to have my gardens now so I had plenty of time to enjoy them.

I am lucky in that I mostly work on the computer so as one gets older, age is not the factor. My gardening is the phisical work I need strength for, fortunately not making money type of work.

Julie- Everyone does whats best for them and fortunately there are so many daylilies that if one had 1,000 acres I bet there would still be daylilies to buy to fill it up. I don't have the unlimited space that you and some others have so I have to make all my space count. I mean look at what I had to do to get this latest garden bed of 16 by 4-5 feet wide, building another of my famous terrace walls.

So, there are exceptions (bought SOUTH SEAS this summer) but mostly I buy newer daylilies that fit into my plan. I also want season extending so I get these. But I have a very specific goal in mind for my daylily gardens and I would much rather have the intros of those hybridizers that I very much like and don't much pay attention to what my daylilies cost.

I also have my favorite hybidizers that I really like and tend to buy intros from these people again and again. Like I have ben doing from Phil Korth and Mary Jane Meadows. I don't care if they are well known or not except to have to tell anyone that will listen about the great daylilies I had found so maybe others might enjoy the work of somewhat lesser known hybridizers also.

Well Rita, I was 64 yesterday! I can retire full SS at 66. I probably will work a year or two longer. I have a moderate pension as well, and DH has an excellent one plus SS. I have aggressively added to my 403B, so I can (as planned) have an increase at 70.

I too do not intend to retire and be pinched. I have got to get my greenhouse set up, (I have the greenhouse, it is just in boxes) and I have a few other things I want to have done before I retire too.

I too have had much leaner times, and I am thankful for the blessings of the present.

I just went through all the daylilies listed in the Floral and Hardy and found none of Phil's in there. I will contact Betty and see which ones she does carry. I have gotten quite a few daylilies from her in the past.

She will carry ALL of them. It was announced in the newsletter I got from Phil. So whatever he has for sale when his website is updated in a little while (so those are not sold out) should be available from her.

Melanie Mason has something similiar (only in reverse) with Brian Culver. You go and look at the daylilies at Brioans site and then order from Melanie if your in the states.

Well, I had to go look at the daylilies,too and there is certainly some real beauties on it.That COOLER BY THE LAKE is gorgeous and TEARS FOR GUS.Oh my, can't wait till spring to see all of Rita's photos of these beauties...

Jean- I think Korth daylilies are simply amazing. He hybridizers in zone 4 and I don't know how he comes up with those fancy flowers.

kay- We just get better with age :-)) I am always amazed at all the garden work you accomplish so you must have lots of energy. I do know that sometimes I am amazed that I have managed to accomplish everything in my yard that is done but if one just keeps at it, lots can be done.

My biggest gripe about getting older is that things just ache that never did years ago. Mostly I just ignore it as much as possible and truely when everythings comes together and the flowers bloom, I foget about all the work it took to get it done.

I have been checking for the updates for 2009 on the website most days and just noticed tonight that the 2009s are up on website.
