Kiwi Full Monty 10 votes

Sagae 10 votes

How about if we made our own survey here on Garden Web...we could then mix it with the Hallsons results...to end up with a pretty good idea of what hostalovers will be favoring for 2007.

OK let's participate...I'll start:

Sagae

Sum and Substance

Paul's Glory

Sun Power

Jade Cascade

Risky Business

    Papou~

Thank you for offering an "expansion team" of ten. I can easily pick a few, but have trouble eliminating some to make a small list. A list of 20 would be much easier to fill and be happy with. Part of my problem is that there are few that I own that have reached maturity. I know that some of my "newbies" from last year will be gorgeous in a few years, but can't justify knocking out ones I am personally familiar with, and love, sort of like pets.

    So...List 1... (not in order)

    1-June
    2-El Nino
    3-Revolution
    4-Frances Williams
    5-Sun Power
    6-Dream Weaver
    7-Fragrant Blue
    8-Stained Glass
    9-Gilt by Association
    10-Frozen Margarita (one of the 2 eyes is a sport, so this isn't a "true" F. M.)

    second tier

    11-Fragrant Dream
    12-Captain Kirk
    13-Halcyon
    14-Ultramarine
    15-Pineapple Upside Down Cake
    16-Eskimo Pie
    17-Jewel on the Nile
    18-On Stage
    19-Guardian Angel
    20-Regal Splendor

I am sure that Guardian Angel and Regal Splendor will rise to the first list once they grow a bit. Last year they were small and unimpressive.

    ~Bunnycat
(I've changed the bottom 10 several times, so I guess getting the extra 10 didn't help after all. LOL)

Donna-alliums prefer full sun and a well drained, not too rich soil. They will grow well in a gravelly rock garden. Obviously, they are not too picky though. In my garden they grow in full sun and fertile, loamy clay soil. The "Ivory Queen" are quite short, 6-8" tall so are best located towards the front edge of a bed. The blooms are long lasting, about 4 weeks. The leaves fade away soon after so its best to plant something nearby that will fill in over the alliums as they begin to go into dormancy for the summer. I bought the original bulbs 10 years ago at a local nursery. I believe they are widely available now. Buy as many as you can afford! :) In a few years they will begin to selfseed and as they mature you can move them around. Plant them in groupings around the front of the bed; you could interspace with other short bulbs like snowdrops, dwarf daffodils, hyacinths, grape hyacinths (if these bulbs grow in your southern zone?) perhaps some primroses with some larger perennials nearby whose foliage will cover up the empty spot from the bulbs when their foliage begins to look ratty and they go into dormancy. I grow hostas, delphiniums, balloonflower, lupines, tall sedums etc nearby In front of my greenhouse, I have planted a dense row of Allium aflatunense 'Purple Sensation'. As the foliage begin to discolour and fade away, the espaliered apple tree in front, leafs out and covers them up.

Beautiful gardens Wayne, you have the "touch". I miss my mature Hostas from Southwestern Ontario, as we moved to PA last year and I had to leave my lovely yard behind. I plan to stop and visit my old yard when we are back in the area this fall. Now I am trying to develop some shade, we moved into a new neighborhood. Great Job!!

    Top 10 Hoyas

    Q

    Comments (35)
Well, I still have a bunch of Aerangis modesta growing on in there. The mounted ones are doing quite well. The potted ones have almost all bit the dust. I would've mounted them all but I ran out of supplies and haven't gotten more. The recently unflasked guys are Aerangis mystacidii and Neofinetia falcata 'Shu Ten Nou'. They are so cute. I really really wanted Aerangis punctata but wasn't able to reserve a flask in time. I am crazy and requested a reservation of a Cattleya luteola flask as well! Hopefully it won't come ready for a while now, I need some breathing room. I'm more worried about insects than disease. My first terrarium, which houses my very lovely Aerangis kirkii, acquired bush snails somewhere along the way and I Can't. Get. Rid. Of. Them. I hate them so much. It also effectively means I cannot add to that terrarium, or move anything in there to another, because I dare not spread the snails around. It frustrates me enough that I want to just start over and scrap that one, but Aerangis kirkii is not the easiest to come by, and mine has done a lot of growing and is turning into quite the specimen, as long as I keep up with it. Plus there are a few other nice specimens in there (like Pleurothallis grobyi and Chaemangis hariotiana), which are more easily replaceable, but I don't want to have to. Hey, so far the hoyas that are in the big terrarium are behaving quite nicely. They have not been attacking the orchids or taking over their space. Everyone is getting along. In fact, the hoyas in there get watered quite regularly because I have to check on the mounted orchids almost daily. Resolution shmesolution... I feel like half the time when one makes a resolution, you are daring yourself to do the opposite. Or maybe that's just me :)

That picture of Elizabeth Levy in the HL must have been taken later in the year. I was rather disappointed in the picture. Mine starts out a brilliant yellow and very gradually changes to yellow chartreuse. She is bright a good two thirds of better of the growing season for me. I can look from a long distance and she stands out like a beacon. . She draws my eye all the time. I have her in a high light shaded place and she still shines out. Also mine is much wavier than the HL pic. I'm thinking strongly of dividing her this year an placing her all about to see what she will do in other light.

I will look and see if I have picture of her. . I took few pictures last year. . working on my paths and all. . .hope to do better this year.

Thanks for all the input on this thread. . I have really been enjoying it.
I'm ashamed that I didn't put montana Aureomarginata on my list of favorites. . .wasn't that a downright sneaky way to add to my already given lists. . .hehehe

Thanks Sidney, I'll keep my eyes open for it.

I like seeing the choices people make. It's very encouraging to see some of the ones I ordered this year (like Eskimo Pie) on the list. There are also the ones that are new, or slow for me. I know they'll be great eventually. Mct

Amy, If you are lining your proposed 3 hostas, I have done that myself with 4...being used as background. The first one is Olive Bailey Langdon (green one with glossy leaves semi-upright); the second one is Sum and Substance...followed by Blue Angel.
Now if your proposed display is triangular I would put at the back in a straight line Sum and Substance and Blue Angel, and in front at the center Olive Bailey Langdon. That would be a nice color combination IMHO. Alternatively, SS could be replaced with Sum of All (which is a sport of SS)...the difference is that it has a narrow white border. That could be nice also. Dont forget to leave at least 6 feet...preferably 7 feet in between the hostas.

Papou, these surveys are always fun. When a hosta I am unfamiliar with pops-up in a list, I run over to the library to check it out.

Sorry, just can't name 10. I keep coming up with 18-20 and will have to keep trying to eliminate some...

    mainma,
What I have learned from this survey is the ever popular Sagae and June are always on top. But two hostas...Blue Mouse Ears and Kiwi Full Monty have climbed the ladder real fast this year....would not be surprised if Blue Mouse Ears was declared the Hosta of the Year 2008.....only guessing...LOL

On my first report for survey on GW, Striptease and Stained should have been included in the list with 7 votes each. Sorry for this error. The combined results however are OK.

These were my top ten I had posted on the Hallson Hosta Forum survey. I picked ones that I've had for a few years and especially like. In no special order:

    Summer Breeze
    Niagara Falls
    Sagae
    Pineapple Upside Down Cake
    Liberty
    Reptillian
    Captain Kirk
    William Lachman
    Spilt Milk
    Komodo Dragon

I'm late getting in on this survey, but couldn't resist adding my favorites. I only have around 100 varieties so it was probably easier for me than most here, but still difficult to choose only ten. I'm going to have to give Sagae another try (it died in a drought). I received it in a trade several years ago, and couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I now wonder if the plant was really Sagae... Thanks for this survey. It will help me in choosing new hostas this spring. :)

    June -- my very favorite!
    Guacamole
    Strip Tease
    Sun Power
    Great Expectations
    Sum and Substance
    Frances Williams
    Krossa Regal
    Gold Standard
    Polar Moon

But this list could change as soon as my beauties are up.
