Haven't we met before?

An interesting thing happened recently. I have had a suspicion that two unidentified Hoya species I had in my collection were close relatives. Both plants budded up at the same time and then they both opened their flowers within less than an hour of each other today. Both plants had a very intense spicy scent initially which has slowly become more sweet smelling. The flowers are only different in colour and size. The leaves of both plants are very similar with only superficial differences including the level of both the shininess and amount of flecking, leaf shape is the same.

This is Hoya sp Palawan GPS 9057 which came from Paul Shirley's collection. I have had this plant for several years and although it is quite large this is only the second time it has bloomed for me.

This is Hoya sp Estrella Waterfall IML 1256 from David Liddle's collection. Estrella waterfall is located on the Philippine Island of Palawan. This is the first blooming for this particular plant and I expect to see a higher number of flowers as the plant matures.

A couple of comparison photos.

It is now obvious that these are two collections of the same species instead of two unique species. Hoya sp Estrella Waterfall is the smaller and much greener flower in both photos.

Wow, MissSherry, I didn't realize the chrysalises were so like the Monarch! I know in the past you posted pics of the cats and the adults - you're the only one I know who has raised these elusive beauties! I managed to accidentally subdue one that was resting on the ground and I didn't see it when I was watering. With the wings wet, it was not able to fly away and I brought it in the house to show my daughter and GD. About that time it began to recover and we about went crazy trying to catch it so it could be released outside! The GLs are a prime example of the "startle" effect IMHO. They blend in so well with their surroundings that they are entirely unnoticable until they open their wings quickly and disappear in flight! Gorgeous butterflies, and as you say, very shy. I don't recall if they nectar or are attracted to rotting fruit, etc. I have never seen them on the fruit feeder, if that is the case, but I have several that hang out in the backyard. Susan

Yes, ladybug larvae, and yes, very beneficial. Now just so you know, they are hungry, and in the absence of more suitable food, will attempt to eat you! But don't worry, they won't be able to fit you in their mouths. You'll feel the bite though! +oM

I've been in the position more than once of buying property with "wide open spaces" abutting it. Don't we all wish to see those spaces remain wide open? I know I do, lol. But, it never occurred to me that investigating the future uses of that land, or who owned it , was anybody else's responsibility than my own. Like somebody else said, caveat emptor in this situation. I have a similar scenario. My husband purchased some rural land for speculation. It was zoned unclassified when he purchased it. I have an agribusines, and felt comfortable with that, as I even considered it may be useful for part of my operations down the road, since it abutted a state route and had close proximity to an interstate interchange. As soon as we got our first tax statement, it had been reclassified as vacant commercial. What? LOL. Going to commercial zoning does change your tax liability. Since we owned this land, I don't even know how that was legally done. I chose not to fight it, however, as that status was a desirable situation for the land if you intended to sell it anyway. BTW, it was sold to a business at a decent profit. I'm not at all unsympathetic to your situation. I used to live close to the area you are buying in, btw. There are ways to gracefully integrate high end apartments and condos into communities without seriously impacting property values, but if it's not done with the present property owners interest's at heart, I can see how it could impact your property's future value. Should your realtor bear the responsibility of disclosure since you asked that question specifically? I dunno. If she/he hadn't researched it and didn't really know it was an honest answer, then it wasn't a failure to disclose and it may not even be considered a "fault", because that's a subjective call. It pretty much boils down to whether you want out of it badly enough to act on it and that's where an attorney comes in to the picture on breaking a contract as painlessly as possible. Good luck.

I'm watching more and more on the internet and most of the time I can avoid commercials altogether this way. I'm glad I put the money toward DSL rather than cable or satellite. It's curious when people talk about what's effective or not in advertising. It's hard to know what really *will* work. It's interesting how some of the best known ads did nothing for sales. For instance, the Apple Macintosh "1984" ad is talked about to this day but didn't achieve anywhere near what they hoped and it's dubious whether it did anything for sales. Publicity, yes, sales though are the desired result. And many people who never saw them in their lives still know and talk about the now infamous "Burma Shave signs" but Burma Shave is long gone. Interesting too. Unique and relatively cheap advertising, had people talking up the product name, name recognition was there and even had people *looking* for the ads! (Not unlike the "Hillside Singers" Coke commercial where people called the stations asking them to play the commercial!) But unfortunately for Burma Shave, few people would buy the product. Seeing hospitals advertising is totally repugnant to me. Prescription medicines, CAT scan procedures and otherwise is likewise annoying. Any supposed "professional" advertising is laughable to me and they lose credibility AFAIC. In a way it's kind of sad to see. One of the big name well-known, high profile attorneys for criminal defense can't get a case these days and is essentially ambulance chasing now. Lately I just haven't seen many memorable commercials, that is memorable in a positive way. I guess the one where the cat gets the bloodhound to help find the litter box is shake your head OK. I do enjoy some of the foreign commercials when they do shows with them as the star. Many places have less uptight people so they can have more fun with them. I really laughed at the German "need glasses?" (Brille notig?) commercial. And the political commercials have already started. Heavy advertising for Wisconsin here lately. Although I realie that the market area includes portions of Wisconsin, we seldom would get it in the regular elections. Suggests to me either the elections are extremely urgent (to the parties) and/or ad rates have dropped. In a few months it'll start heavy political ads nationwide so I'll need to change batteries in the remote to keep up with changing channels. One good thing about the state "shutdown". No more commercials about how "the other side" won't listen to reason - call them and tell them you want __________.

Laura you must be getting low on growing space? I'll be keeping my plants separate because it makes trading much easier. I am a huge fan of both plants but the green colour form is especially nice and I assume would be more in demand.

lol I had the same reaction to Laura's post. You're harsh, man! It's like potting all the pottsii's together! They are discernible even if they are the same species. I have a favorite, but I'm not saying which...

This does make me feel a little better about my beloved Estrella blooming cream in Florida conditions, though. In a weird way. Honestly, to me this is good news. Two collections of a species I am gaga for. Trade me some GPS 9057! The man I marry will smell just like this plant.

Aggie I have another interesting one in bud right now. I have not been photographing the rebloomers though, just not enough time.

GG I absolutely love the scent of this Hoya. Right now that crazy Hoya with 30 peduncles worth of flowers is blooming again and it's really stinking up the apartment. The sp 9057 and Estrella are being drown out by a sickly sweet musky scent.
You know I seem to remember that the Gesneriads made it across the boarder just fine, why not risk a little piece of Hoya?
A Hoya Hero calendar sounds hilarious as long as there are not super hero costumes involved. Ha ha

This forum is a bad influence ;) Just when I thought that 25 hoya plants in less than a year it's enough, that it's time to pay more attention to back yard, got my gardenia blooms to open and adeniums re potted, you show me another hoya I really like!!!

YES it IS a space issue. My darling fiance is NOT going with the idea to adding a growing rack into our bedroom, in front of the south window.

LOL Well maybe you could keep them individually labeled even from within group pots. Like with those little {{gwi:935512}}.

Well it depends on what his objections are. Does he just generally disapprove of the time/financial investment you are making in your plants? Or, does he want to have an aesthetically 'normative' home (aka not full to the brim with plants.) Or, does he simply want personal access to the window, you know, to look out of and enjoy sunshine from. :P

I really thought I'd be able to use my bedroom window... Maybe I will just yet...
I think I have a wee bit more room yet. I want to get some more baskets going, and use awkward window space in that way.

Also looking for the wire closet shelves, to make racks in front of other windows...

Maybe I'll bring my giant carnosa to work? That will free up some space for sure!

GG I'm not sure if growing a sprawling Hoya carpet under the bed is a great idea or the epitome of the phrase plant crazed. I kinda wish you never planted that thought in my head. LOL

Laura doesn't your man know that light is for PLANTS! Just make up some excuse about faded furniture and then start hanging those plants up. :)

Already have a compacta hanging in the bedroom window, but I need to find a way to fit more.

I'll figure something just yet!
