It's me or the dog. . .

I am so d***n mad. . . I had a huge basket of hoyas sitting on the floor, out of the way, not hurting anything. Came home last Wednesday to find a big pile of soil, which as nice and wet b/c I watered that day (figures) and underneath the soil was what once used to be potted in the pot. . .mutiflora (which WAS going to bloom any day) a very large pub. splash. Then on a pedestal right beside the basket was my DS-70. The whole works ended up in a heap on the floor.

Luckily only a few pieces were broke off, I will root them. Time will tell if the mulitflora will continue to bloom, I doubt it, the buds look pretty limp.

I don't yell much anymore, now that the kids are out of the house, but let me tell you, thosed dogs knew I was pissed. They all three took off for the bedroom and didn't come out til papa came home. . . good thing. . .

All this b/c the neighbors came home. . . well heck they've only lived there for 5 years, how dare they come home. . .

It's a good thing I love my dogs more than I do my hoyas. . . Grrrrrr.

Well Maid, I hope this may help you feel a little better. I covered up my shadehouse with plastic to make a 'greenhouse' because of the freeze we had here in FL about 2 weeks ago. Well, today, it rained cats & dogs and the weight of all the water on top of the plastic made the entire shadehouse collapse. Now all the plants that I put in there to save from the freeze are in peril and it is still raining too dang hard for me to go out and save plants. I am so mad, I could scream.
Don't get to mad at the doggies. At least they give you love. My pile of wood ain't gonna give me nothing. :(

Oh, Maid, I'm sorry!

I've had pots upset on me, klutz that I am. I've never lost blooms, but I know the frustration. I hope your plants make a speedy recovery.

It looks like obedience school for the dogs! LOL, just kidding.

Don't feel lousy, you are doing an heroic job. Is she in her own room or in the family/living room? You may need to isolate her. She's not "watching" TV, she's probably lost in her own thoughts and the TV provides white noise. Can you find another kind of white noise that will block out the normal sounds of life that seem to bother her. Otherwise, you'll have to learn to block out her rants. (Yeah, right). A pat on the hand and a quick "Sorry" might work, but don't change your life, or you'll go crazy. My mother got this way, and my dad was able to cope by giving a nod and a reassurance to her, until she started to get physical, then she went to the nursing home. Good luck.

Gina - I'm sorry about the loss of your son. That must have been really tough. My dh and I are in somewhat of the same predicament in that we don't have anyone to leave our small, but growing estate. We are in our late thirties/early 40's, no kids. Would love to have them, but have been unable. we are doing fine financially, for people our age. We have a small mortgage, no debt and some retirement savings. I just started working recently due to immigration process. Because of lack of experience in the US, I can only get temp jobs at a lower rate of pay, even though I have significant IT, HR and Finance experience from Canada. The similarity is we will eventually have a nice nest egg, but we have no one to leave it to. I have an older sister and a niece, but my sister is very well off and niece is spoiled. She may grow out of her spoiled phase, I dunno. That said, I have always wanted to donate to charities that help underprivileged animals. Our dogs are our kids and we adopted an unwanted 14 YO blind shitzu nearly two years ago when his family left the gate open and let him wander across a hiway. Did I mention the dog is BLIND? They didn't want him anymore. A wonderful woman found him and took him in, but she died a short time later. I found him posted on Freecycle and we took him in. He has been a wonderful part of our family for nearly two years and even though he's blind and deaf, he gets around just fine. Unfortunately, it's getting to the point we may have to put him down because he is arthritic and can't walk like he used to. We will do it with a heavy heart, but also knowing we gave him two additional years he wouldn't have had and that he had alot of love from us. When Katrina hit, I wanted to adopt every single homeless animal, but of course I couldn't. We also couldn't donate to every organization, but there are many shelters right now that still have homeless animals left over from Katrina. They need lots of funds and donations to keep them afloat so these displaced animals aren't put down. Perhaps that is the type of charity you're looking for? Even if it's not Katrina shelters, there are countless shelters that need funds to feed animals and give them medical attention, especially no kill shelters. We are doing our wills right now and in the event both of us go, a large sum of our estate will go to a reputable organization that saves animals, mostly dogs, from euthanasia - specifically no kill shelters. There are even places that house dogs for life, much like a retirement homes for dogs, where they live in the country and have dedicated personnel to keep them happy in their old age. If one of us goes, the other will survive on the life insurance and rest of the estate. Once the survivor goes, then a significant donation will be cited for an animal rescue charity since we have no one else really to leave our funds. They are small now, but in the future after dh retires and with family inheritences, we should have a sizable estate. I'm also one of those frugal ones. My friends call me the Bargain shopping Queen (BSQ for short). I may not be as frugal as you, but I don't pay full price for mostly everything. If I find a good deal, I will buy it. I did alot of couponing and it's AMAZING how much money you save, especially combining buy 1 get 1 frees. I did a huge grocery shop one day and the bill came to over $300 and with coupons it was less than $20. I was proud of myself for that one! lol

We own 3 Neapolitan Mastiffs, two adults and one 10wk old puppy. We also have a German Shepherd Dog, Pitbull and English Mastiff. We also have 4 large parrots, 2 cats, a snake and 2 rats. I use crates for the two adult Neos and the GSD and I will be crate training the Neo puppy once she is a little older and feels more secure in her new home. I use crates for sleeping, eating and time outs. Everyone is shuffled around all day everyday between rooms and outdoor time because the Pitbull and English Mastiff are both at the ends of their lives and cannot be bumped around. I use 4 baby gates. I do not keep any of my dogs in their crates unless they want to be in it, which the GSD and adult female Neo like to be every once in awhile. I crate them when I am not at home while the seniors have run of the house. The puppy stays with me 24/7 for the first 6 months. Neapolitans have different types of personalities and temperaments. My big boy is very laidback and loves everyone but my big girl is extremely dominant and has her natural instinct intact for what they were originally bred for 2,000 years ago. They were bred to be soldiers for the Roman Army. Knives were strapped to them and they would run under horses to bring them down and kill them. They were fought in the Coliseum against lions, tigers and other large animals. They were bred to kill. Much of that is gone in a great many Neos that are around today but it is still in some of the bloodlines. They take very special handling when they are like that. They will try to take control throughout their life to see if they can get the top spot in the pack. My Medusa is this way. She must be constantly reminded who the boss is. I have had to be very strict with her since she was 8 weeks old and her dominance was very apparent. I was pinning down unruly dogs with my hand on their neck over 20 years ago long before The Dog Whisperer came around. I was doing this to Medusa at 8 weeks of age when she was 30lbs. She is now 150lbs at 2 years old. Now I have to lay on her back and put her in a headlock to remind her who the boss is when she starts to disobey. We heavily researched this breed for two years before buying the first. My partner is on the board of The United States Neapolitan Mastiff Club, which is the AKC parent club of the breed. We are also involved with Neo Rescue Inc. and The Mastino Health Foundation. This is not the breed for everyone and definitely not for a first time dog owner. If a Neo wants out of a crate, it will come out of it. They can go through doors and chainlink too. These are extremely strong dogs, they must be trained and heavily socialized starting very young. Despite their huge size, up to 200lbs for males, they are very fast and very hard to hold onto because of the skin. I love this breed more than any other and we learn all we can about it. We do as much as possible in breed education so people know what to expect when they are thinking about getting one or breeding one. If a Neo breeder warns you about what you can expect and requires a contract, that is a good breeder. If they do not warn you what to expect and they donÂt care what you do, that is a bad breeder. While a regular dog can do hundreds of dollars in damage in an unexpected dog fight, a Neo can do thousands of dollars in damage very quickly and you wonÂt be able to stop it if it gets started. That's just awful. Luckily for me my dog's too small to even be able to nudge a pot and 98% of my plants are too high for her to even reach.

Plants can be very resilient. I've dropped several myself from decent heights and they just kept pluggin' along. Best of luck to you.

And to you too trini. Hope your plants make it through alright.

Oh, those darn doggies! I'll give you some hope, though. After I got my first German Shepherd, I was constantly having my plants "spontaneously pruned" by big, clumsy dog's overly enthusiastic tail. I learned that a pruned plant (whether intential or not) ends up being a better plant after it recovers. So don't fret - and try to do what I do now. (Through grit teeth) "Thank you so much, Lucy, for whacking that plant." I don't really mean it when I say it, but a year later, when it looks fan-freakin-tastic, then mean it!

Oh, and here's one that will put the humor back in your situation (knowing we've all been there...) I came home from work one day several years ago to find a beautiful 5 foot tall, full fig tree spread all across my living room and dining room, barely any pieces with more than 2 or 3 leaves, and the soil spread across almost every inch of the carpet. (Nice, moist soil...) I was so pi$$ed off, I kicked my shoe off, right through the dining room window! (Adding insult to injury!) LOL - it's funny now, but oh how I wanted to (at the time) give that puppy a one way ticket to H-E-double hockey sticks!

Yeah Maid, I'm sorry your pant fell over too and I hope it recovers nicely and does really well for you. Didn't mean to rant on your thread. I was a little miffed at the time. Good luck with the multiflora and let us know how it does.

Maid, I'm so sorry for the plant incident. Dogs can be a handful sometimes(Pugs and other dogs too) can be very rambunctious. I know,lol...Good luck and hope they recover quickly...but I'm sure they will.

Trini, I am so sorry for the rain accident that you had with your shadehouse. We try to do one thing to prevent something else from happening, only to have something totally unexpected happen. Maybe once the rain is over...it won't be as bad as it seems. Good luck to you and your hoyas!! Please keep us posted.

Oh no I am sorry to hear of everyone's pet troubles. My dog does not bother my plants other than to find dropped leaves and chew them up. Unfortunately I am the one who knocks plants over in my household. :(

Well, I have a feeling it wasn't Lucy, my rottweiler, I think it was one of the pugs. . . I don't know for sure. . . I just have a feeling. I've seen their reaction when they see something outside they don't like. But I've also seen Lucy charge up against the glass, like she's going to go right thru it.

Thankfully tails aren't an issue here, as much as Lucy wags her stub, I can't imagine anything survivng in her path of distruction.

I feel everyones pain so I thought I would share mine.
A short time ago I had 3 cats, 2 Siberian Husky and 9,yes 9 puppies at home. Well the cats are not to bad with the plants but I keep and eye on things and the 2 big dogs dont bother much with the plants(I dont have any big trees, thank god) and the dogs and pups are not allowed to go into the livingroom (well trained, thanks to hubby) but then there is the puppies......I only lost about 8 plants to them. As my husband says "There is a surprise for you at home" and then follows up with..."You will never learn" Then I know that we have soil and plants on the kitchen floor. I respond with "What the h..ll were you doing that the dogs got into my plants when this is your job being a breeder of dogs?"...LOL Well at least the kids will help with the clean up. Now the kitchen table holds a large plant stand with a plant on it and several plants.
Now I only have 4 puppies left and I have moved them to my work along with my huband. We have a large apt here with a huge room for the puppies. Next week when I close for seasonal shut down it time for plants first and then cleaning the house time. Have fun everyone.
